  • Unspoken Pain: Infertility’s Impact on Mental Health in Indian Couples

Unspoken Pain: Infertility’s Impact on Mental Health in Indian Couples

Infertility and Mental Health Summit, supported by IMBesharam.com

New Delhi (India), April 1: Infertility is an uncomfortable and stigmatised topic in India. This does not steal away from its alarming rise. “Nearly one in six married couples are believed to be impacted by infertility in India, sadly less than 1% seek medical assistance. This is due to lack of awareness, and difficulties in access/ affordability of treatment”, Aatish Rathi, Birla Fertility. Diagnosis and treatment of infertility can cause extreme psychological stress among the couple spanning confusion, frustration, depression, anxiety, hopelessness, and guilt. Women bear the brunt of infertility distress because of the cultural conditioning that a woman is primarily responsible for bearing the child.

Still, a large number of medical experts are ill equipped to address infertility related mental health challenges especially with the sensitivity it demands. One of the male clients struggling with low sexual desire stated that the andrologist insensitively remarked ‘why are you making a big fuss about desire, you are a man.’

To highlight the mental health wellness gap in infertility diagnosis and treatment, GetIntimacy, India’s leading platform for intimacy education, with support from IMBesharam and other sponsors, concluded the much-anticipated Infertility and Mental Health Summit on 22nd January 2023, in Gurgaon, India. The Summit saw participation from over 100+ healthcare professionals – andrologists, gynaecologists, infertility specialists, mental health experts and sexual wellness brands – Birla Fertility, Ananta Hempcare, IMBesharam, Haplocare, Gravid, Apex Healthcare, to name a few. The Summit was dedicated to sensitising healthcare experts on mental health challenges couples (especially women) face while undergoing infertility treatment.

Prior to the summit, GetIntimacy surveyed over 100 infertile couples and discovered alarming insights. “It’s high time we normalise discussions around infertility and its impact on a couple’s psycho-social life”, said Pallavi Barnwal, founder of GetIntimacy.

The survey showed how a couple who is diagnosed as ‘infertile’ enters a vicious cycle.

A large number of couples reach the brink of divorce. In one instance, the husband’s family threatened the wife to ‘give a child’ or face separation over her ‘inability to conceive’.

Then, most infertile women compare themselves to their friends/ relatives with kids and feel isolated and stressed about it.

Finally, excessive interference of parents/ in-laws drastically affects the couple’s mental health. In one instance, a mother-in-law kept a check on her daughter-in-law’s timing of sex, and even dared to ask her ‘did you have sex previous night’. This created acute mental stress because of a grave violation of privacy.

Sadly, such cases are just the tip of the iceberg, with countless others under the carpet.

Dr. Meenakshi Ahuja, Gynaecologist and Senior Director at Fortis La Femme said that it is unfortunate that women associate self-worth with being a mom which equates infertility to being ‘not good enough’. Also many times, mothers /in-laws too, tend to make the woman feel ‘incomplete’ by constant bickering.

Also, working women who choose to have children later in life, are put under additional pressure that this is the price being paid for prioritising career aspirations.

Many Indian men are unwilling to admit that they can have sexual problems because it hits their notorious ‘male ego’. Dr. Surbhi Singh, Gynaecologist, highlighted that when female patients come for treatment, they’re accompanied by their mother/ in-law. The husband’s tests are delayed or never happen.

This is due to the social conditioning that manhood equals his sexual performance. However, performance anxiety and erectile dysfunction are quite common. And many men remain unaware of the treatment options available, the most powerful of them being Ayurveda.

“Herbs like Ashwagandha, Shatavari etc., can improve sexual health and help with infertility. Hemp is a very potent element too, it can improve sexual performance, quality and help avoid certain sexual challenges”, said Mansi Sood, Ananta Hempcare.

Subject matter experts lamented about the lack of sexual education. The men are unaware of their desires, lack personal hygiene and miss out on the basics of pleasure for a woman. They project unrealistic expectations from porn which further distances their wives. Women, who have had a sheltered upbringing, accept this as something ‘wrong’ with themselves.

Thus many marriages remain sexless even though couples are perfectly healthy and IVF is opted because they start seeing sex as a chore.

“Of late, sexual health educators & doctors, social media influencers and sexual wellness brands like IMbesharam have been trying to de-stigmatize pleasure and other taboos.

At IMbesharam we have been working tirelessly for a decade to open conversations between experts and seeking, husband and wife, parents and children. We showcase sex toys as a means of healthy adult pleasure. Basically, they are just pieces of rubber and silicone, it’s our mind that makes it what we imagine it to be.

We are also trying to make access to sex toys easier because pleasure focus can greatly alleviate the mental health burden usually associated with sex and infertility.”  Raj Armani, Founder IMBesharam, India’s leading adult store

Mental health easily gets overlooked in the fertility story. It’s only after the plethora of physical tests are given a clean chit, is the psychological perspective hinted at. Else, neither desire nor the emotional burden of infertility, ever given importance.

During pregnancy too, a lot of women undergo postpartum depression but are forced to keep quiet, else they will be seen as bad moms. The panellists underlined the need for making psychological checks a part of infertility treatment and the pregnancy journey.

“Normalising conversations around treatment options, especially for mental health challenges, is vital. At Birla, we partner with couples, so that they are aware and remain the decision makers. We have specialised facilities for both physical and mental wellbeing. We ensure that we are accessible and encourage communication so that couples do not feel isolated”, Aatish Rathi, Birla Fertility & IVF.

Dr. Nidhi Jha, a leading Gynaecologist & IVF expert also reiterated that a healthy communication channel is crucial, for both men and women to open up safely; with each other, their families and with the health expert.

     Conclusion

Overall, the Infertility and Mental Health Summit drove pertinent conversations on viewing infertility not just an end symptom to be handled clinically. But looking at it from a holistic purview, including mental health, sex education and social discussions. The Summit drove home the fact that infertility is not solely  a woman’s responsibility. And reiterated that cultural drivers need to be addressed with medical ones to resolve this challenge.

  • Causes of Hair Loss, Homeopathic Remedies for Hair fall

Causes of Hair Loss, Homeopathic Remedies for Hair fall

New Delhi (India), April 1: Hair loss is not just from a particular diet or hormonal changes, it can also result from a medical condition or use of certain drugs. Let’s talk about the various factors that can cause permanent or temporary hair loss, including male pattern baldness and female pattern hair loss, as well as Homeopathic treatment for hairfall.

    Hair Loss In Males

Research by a team of cardiologists associated with Ahmedabad-based UN Mehta Institute of Cardiology on more than 1,900 individuals has revealed that those who have male pattern baldness and early greying of hair have more than five times higher risk of getting heart disease. Hair loss is not just from a particular diet or hormonal changes, it can be a medical condition. The study found that nearly 50% of heart attack patients had androgenic alopecia commonly known as male pattern baldness as compared to around 27% of healthy counterparts. Men who had just crown-top hair lossor vertex baldness, Alopecia Areata/Patchy hair loss, were 52 percent. Male pattern baldness, according to Medical News Today, increased the risk of coronary artery disease by 5.6 times and premature greying by 5.3 times. It is not a cosmetic problem, it’s a medical concern.

    Hair Loss In Females

A variety of conditions, including hormonal changes caused by pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, and thyroid problems, can cause permanent or temporary hair loss in females. Female pattern hair loss (FPHL) affects roughly 40% of women by the age of 50. Certain drugs, such as those used to treat cancer, arthritis, depression, heart problems, gout, and high blood pressure, can cause hair loss.

Hair loss is a medical concern

Hair loss is not a cosmetic problem, it’s a medical concern. According to a study conducted by the National Centre for Biotechnology, people suffering from Alopecia can experience psychological consequences such as high levels of anxiety and depression. Other than Alopecia Areata, extreme hair loss causes baldness and can be caused by thyroid disorders, certain medications, and other Autoimmune Diseases. It could also be the result of heredity, nutritional deficiencies, infection, smoking, or stress.

    Homeopathic remedies for hair loss

Homeopathic remedies treat all of these medical disorders, thereby addressing the underlying cause of hair loss. Homeopathic medicine also considers mental as well as emotional issues such as stress and anxiety, which are frequently the root of hair loss.It targets the mind and gently restores mind-body equilibrium to treat the patient as a whole.

Research has proved that certain homeopathic medicines can act as natural DHT inhibitors and thereby help control hair loss without any side effects. For hair growth, there are Aesthetic hair fall treatments available that can help increase volume and enhance hair rejuvenation and growth.

Homeopathic medicines have numerous positive benefits and hold promise for promoting overall scalp health. It addresses several underlying causes of hair loss, and thinning of hair and promotes hair growth.

Hair is made up of protein and iron, therefore diet which is rich in protein and iron such as chickpeas, milk, Lentils, mushrooms, Beetroot, Soybeans, and vitamin C-rich fruits is recommended to encourage hair growth.

One should always look out for the early stages of Alopecia Areata. The signs of the disease are unexpected loss of round or oval areas of hair on the scalp, in the beard region, and in eyebrows respectively in men and women. Just before the hair starts falling out, one can feel a burning sensation in the patchy area. If left untreated, then one can lose hair of the entire scalp and even of the body, therefore immediate consultation with the doctor is very important in such cases.

There are forty different types of hair loss, hence it is important to identify the correct type and then treat it holistically. There are many aesthetic treatments that are available in the market for hair growth in combination with Homeopathy.

  • Meet the 2019 Kainchi Dham Visitor, Who Finds Inspiration in Steve Jobs and Purpose in Up-Skilling Students Via His SOYTIL Platform

Meet the 2019 Kainchi Dham Visitor, Who Finds Inspiration in Steve Jobs and Purpose in Up-Skilling Students Via His SOYTIL Platform

Bangalore (Karnataka) [India], April 1: Smalan Varghese, a passionate first-generation Indian entrepreneur, launches SOYTIL, a microlearning upskilling platform to empower the learning community worldwide. The platform is making a severe buzz among school and college students of 8-21 years of age through its convenient 15-minute study modules and live workshops.

SOYTIL, alias School of Young Talent in Leadership, is the brainchild of entrepreneur and author Smalan Varghese. Born and brought up in Aizawl, India, Smalan has penned a self-help book titled ‘2049 Elite’s Secret Apple’, which talks about the importance of Failures and the road to achieving greatness through perseverance and having a vision.

SOYTIL’s formation came into existence when Smalan went on a spiritual solo journey to the Kainchi Dham Mandir in 2019 to find his true self and the purpose of his life. According to him, the visit has been transformational in realizing the meaning of his existence. After Steve Jobs & Mark Zuckerberg, Smalan Varghese, too, found the vision to build something great.

He imbibed much experience in the educational field from his previous position at Unacademy as the Senior Manager and with NGOs like the Gandhi fellowship and Save the Children. Rooting on his work experiences and personal insights, he conceives and launches SOYTIL.

Established in 2020, the SOYTIL platform provides easily accessible 15 minutes-learning modules on various in-demand skills that are otherwise not taught in mainstream schools and colleges. SOYTIL understands the necessity of learning Financial Literacy, People Skills, and Entrepreneurship to survive and fly high in the 21st-century competition and has, thus, realized a platform to cater to the students.

The form of teaching/learning in SOYTIL is bite-sized slide decks and live workshops. SOYTIL understands that the attention span of the current generation has significantly decreased, and this bite-sized content is the best possible learning tool for them. Upon completing the SOYTIL course and clearing the SOYTIL proficiency test, the student will earn an ISO-certified certificate of proficiency.

SOYTIL primarily provides content in three major categories and a total of nine subcategories. The three main categories include Boost Financial Literacy, Master People Skills, and Build A Start-Up. They are particular about not keeping any restrictions regarding the content or the subscription period; thus, all the members are provided lifetime access.

SOYTIL positively differentiates itself from the rest of the learning platforms in multiple aspects. The highlight among them is its commitment to bridging the void that the students may face in terms of necessary hard skills and soft skills. SOYTIL is the only start-up that enables school and college students to master hard skills like financial literacy, entrepreneurship, etc., and soft skills like communication, empathy, emotional intelligence, growth mindset, confidence building, etc.,

Within just two years of its conception, SOYTIL changed the learning nature of the online learning community. It is estimated that SOYTIL modules have an impressive completion rate of 90% compared to an average of 5-20% for the traditional platforms. The fact that even people who were not fortunate to avail of formal education could use SOYTIL for learning adds to the scope of the platform.

The founder shares his vision: “There are still a majority of the people who feel the education or learning stops at either school or college. The last two decades have seen a drastic change in the way we carry on our lives. Has our education changed much? However small be the change, the objective was to make a difference.”

The disparity that would possibly exist between the students who have undergone the SOYTIL child transformational journey and the regular students would be day and night. The students who gained proper training in hard and soft skills will run ahead of the rest of the lot. Parents need to ask themselves the last time they were able to make their children aware of financial literacy, basic communication skills, public speaking confidence, etc. The very fact that the lion’s share of children is unaware of such skills, adds to the scope of an expert and comprehensive solution like SOYTIL.

The team at SOYTIL strives to realize its founder’s vision to make a difference in the learning community. Smalan Varghese also shares and cherishes the dream of building an Online to Offline (O2O) school which beholds the same values and fundamentals of SOYTIL. He also put forth genuine efforts in collaboration with various NGOs to support underprivileged students who are not in a position to afford SOYTIL membership.

The SOYTIL team intends to incorporate advanced technology like Artificial Intelligence and Augmented Reality into their classrooms very soon. SOYTIL is indeed laying a stepping stone to more advanced and inclusive schools to come in the future and bridge the unfortunate gap between the current educational system and the required skills of the real world.
