The footprints of “Achhi Aadat (Good Habits Campaign) -a JICA India initiative; in the Deoghar district of Jharkhand

The footprints of “Achhi Aadat (Good Habits Campaign) -a JICA India initiative; in the Deoghar district of Jharkhand

Deoghar (Jharkhand) [India], February 6: The provision of a clean and safe environment to its citizens should be the mandate of any Government. One of the key motives of Achhi Aadat Campaign (AAC), a JICA India initiative and IJ Kakehashi Services Pvt. Ltd. (IJK), is to attain the above objective and thus designed to contribute to provide a clean and hygienic environment to its targeted beneficiaries through dissemination of knowledge in a strategic manner.

As per SDG India Index 2.0, Jharkhand scores one of the lowest in SDG Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) Index score, with respect to other States/UTs. Further, the State Government acknowledges the fact that “In Jharkhand entire population does not have access to safe drinking water and sanitation. Rural sanitation coverage is very low. About 30% of habitations have partial facility with drinking water (source: Official website of the State Government (https://www.jharkhand.gov.in/drinking-water)

In view of the above facts, the Achhi Aadat Campaign 2022, has marked its presence in some pockets of Deoghar district, Jharkhand State through meaningful interventions of awareness and knowledge enhancement of the rural communities and school students. This initiative was supported by Nihon Suido Consultants Co., Ltd., a leading Japanese engineering consulting firm in the water sector.

The interventions were implemented with the support of a local NGO, Chetna Vikas which has an esteemed presence in Deoghar district of Jharkhand State for many years and has meaningfully contributed in the improvement of the sanitation conditions in the district. The NGO has conducted educational sessions with the school children on the importance of hygiene especially that of handwashing with soap and nail hygiene. It was exhibited through a puppet show, handwashing demonstration, etc. The NGO has also engaged with the school children through holding painting competition on the importance of hygiene and other sanitation practices.

In this matter, Mr. Sourabh Bhatacharjee, Head of Operations, Social Development Projects IJK quoted, while narrating about his observations during his field visit to Deoghar- “Exemplifying from a local context always helps in a better penetration of the key messages of any social intervention. In the course of disseminating the importance of handwashing with soap, the NGO officials had highlighted the stunted conditions of the children in the village due to lack of hygiene conditions of the pregnant mothers in the village. This example was an attempt to ensure the contemplation stage of the Behavior Change Communication process amongst the beneficiaries. Positioning of the AAC messages and their presentation amidst the mixed populace was really praiseworthy.”

On a concluding note, the blend of communication activities at the community level along with the school going children pertaining to the messaging of handwashing with soap and nail hygiene in Deoghar proved to be a welcome step towards achieving the hygienic and clean society.

The quizmaster duo has shared their pearls of wisdom with the participants as they gear up for the Grand Finale of ClassAct 2023 – The Hindustan Times Republic Day Quiz.

Cool tips from Dr. Navin Jayakumar

Dr. Navin Jayakumar is an ophthalmologist by profession and has recently been elected as the President of Indian Neuro-Ophthalmologist Society. A quizmaster by passion, he is the founding member of The Quiz Foundation of India. Dr. Jayakumar has been the quizmaster for famous national-level quizzes, such as the Landmark Quiz, the Murugappa Madras Quotient School Quiz and the Rotary Galaxy Science and Technology Quiz among others. Here are his suggestions.

Read, record, recall: The reputed quizmaster Neil O’Brien (considered as the Father of Indian Quizzing) described this trio of acts as his method of becoming a successful quizzer. I’ll add one more step to these: REVISE. It comes right after RECORD. So, this is how one should go about it: READ a lot and read widely, RECORD the interesting facts that you read in a notebook, REVISE what you wrote before a quiz and finally RECALL the fact during a quiz!

Invest time in lateral thinking: Make connections between seemingly unconnected facts. For example, certain plant seeds and Velcro. If one reads about plant burrs (little seeds with hooks that can attach to your clothes to help the seed find a new home), one may soon discover that it was the inspiration behind the invention of Velcro!

Be a part of quiz clubs: Quiz clubs, be it at school or outside, are a great way not just to improve one’s quizzing knowledge but also to make friends. For instance, the Quiz Foundation of India in Chennai to which I belong, meets on alternate Sundays when one member will set a quiz and the others form teams to answer. If there is no quiz club around you, start one!

Focus on practice: Try out the innumerable online quizzes available, watch quiz contest recordings on YouTube, and take part in every quiz competition that you hear about. For seasoned quizzers, one would recommend joining an online quiz league. Remember to always play fair and not use Google for answers. Similarly, stay true to your passion for quizzing and do not use an accomplice to feed you answers while taking part in an online quiz game. Quizzing is sport and any sport requires sportsmanship and fair play!

Try being a quizmaster: One of the best ways to excel in a subject is to prepare questions on it for a quiz. Quizmasters have to dive deep into a subject and explore all its ramifications to make a good set of questions and then try their hands at conducting quizzes.

Smart suggestions from Mr. Avinash Mudaliar

Mr. Avinash Mudaliar is a distinguished quizmaster with years of quiz hosting experience. He has been the quizmaster for the Power of Ideas Print Quiz, Airtel Quiz-o-Mania, Airtel’s techQ, and  the NTPC Electron Quiz to name a few. He has also hosted quizzes for major

corporates and prestigious institutions. Previously, he has also co-hosted the ClassAct 2022: The Hindustan Times Republic Day Quiz and Smartacus 2022: The Hindustan Times National Interschool Quiz with Dr. Jayakumar. Here are his top tips.

Train hard, fight easy: Read, read, and then read some more. Get into the habit of intensive daily reading while gleaning through knowledge and the happenings around the world. Sooner or later, everything lands up as a quiz question! Even if it doesn’t, you still know a little bit more than you did the previous day.

If it’s a good day, make it a great one: Some days you will unearth a rare nugget of information or a precious new fact that most people are unaware of. Don’t remain satisfied with that discovery. Try and learn five or ten other related things about what you discovered. In quizzing, like in cricket, it is always the ‘extras’ that matter in the end!

Interact with other quizzers: Be a part of an active quiz community, group, club, or society that meets regularly and quizzes together with gusto. It is only by interacting with like- minded knowledge hunters that your own skills will develop, grow, and become sharper.

Remember, those who quiz together, grow together.

Practise making quiz questions: Quite often, the best way to become a better quizzer is to get into the habit of making quiz questions of your own. Be it your class in school, or your circle of friends and family, develop the habit of converting what you know into interesting quiz questions that you can ask. The very act of stepping into the quizmaster’s shoes helps you understand the myriad ways in which a simple fact can become a tantalising quiz question!

Focus on match practice: Get into the habit of participating in as many quizzes as you can, at as many levels as you can, and as often as you can. All the reading and knowledge- gathering in the world is useless as a quizzer unless you test your mettle in the heat of battle by crossing swords with ot.her quiz-loving buffs like yourself. Only when you come up against a variety of quiz-mastering styles and a variety of quizzing oppositions that you truly realise how good (or not-so-good!) you really are. And remember, it does not matter whether you win or lose. If you win, you remember those answers only once. But if you lose once because of a bad answer or two, you will never forget those facts till the end of time!

It is a global initiative led by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) for a cancer-free world. This year’s World Cancer Day theme, “Close the Care Gap”, is all about celebrating progress in its many forms that enable more people to seek and receive the care they need and deserve. Here are some of the best oncologists sharing suggestions on cancer.

Dr. Jojo V Joseph, MS (Surgery), MCh (Oncosurgery), Senior Consultant Surgical Oncologist, Caritas Cancer Institute Kottayam Indiragadhi co-op Hospital, Kochi

Cancer does not mean that life has come to an end. Cancer is just like any other challenge we face in our lives, and we must never give up on it. Making everyone aware of cancer is the first step toward ridding the world of it. This year’s theme is “Close the Care Gap” in cancer care, which is about understanding the inequities in cancer care and taking action to make the necessary progress to address them. On this World Cancer Day, let’s promise to never surrender or let everyone else surrender to the disease.

Dr. Satvik Khaddar, MD, DM Medical Oncology, Consultant Medical Oncologist, Indore

On the occasion of World Cancer Day, I would like to remind everyone that early detection is key to successful treatment and recovery. I advise everyone to be aware of the signs and symptoms of cancer and to schedule regular check-ups with their healthcare provider. It is also important to make lifestyle choices that can reduce the risk of cancer, such as maintaining a healthy diet and exercise regimen, not smoking, and limiting alcohol consumption. In short, cancer is preventable and beatable, and by being proactive about our health and making informed choices, we can reduce the impact of cancer on our lives and those around us.

Dr. Gunjesh Kumar Singh, MBBS, MD, DM Medical Oncology (Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai), ESMO Certified Medical Oncologist, Consultant & HOD-Bhagwaan Mahavir Medica Super Speciality Hospital, Jharkhand

Today on World Cancer Day, let’s come together to raise awareness and educate ourselves on the ways we can prevent and fight this disease. As a doctor, I see the impact of cancer on individuals and families every day, but I also see the strength and resilience of those who have overcome it. Making small, healthy choices in our daily lives can have a big impact on reducing our risk. Let’s prioritize our health, get regular check-ups, and support each other on this journey towards a cancer-free world. Together, we can make a difference.

Dr. Shivakumar Uppala, MBBS, MS, MCH (Surgical Oncology), FAIS, FMAS, Consultant Surgical, Oncologist & Medical Director – Trust in Hospital and Norgh Hospital, Bangalore

Cancer is a growing phenomenon, and everyone should be vigilant about the symptoms of cancer in general. The most common symptoms are loss of weight, loss of appetite, generalized weakness, back pain, and difficulty breathing. Breast lump, nipple discharge, rectum bleeding, change in bowel and bladder functions, blood in the sputum, difficulty swallowing, inability to open the mouth, mouth ulcer, bleeding after intercourse, and a variety of other common symptoms.

If any of these symptoms occur, consult with an oncologist immediately. We have made a lot of advances in treatment with the availability of laparoscopic surgery, robotic surgery, newer chemotherapy agents, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy and most cancers can be cured if detected at an early stage.

Dr. Saurabh Gupta, MCh (Surgical oncology), Senior consultant & Unit head, Oncologist & Robotic Cancer Surgeon (Seoul), Venkateshwar Cancer Hospital, New Delhi

World Cancer Day is commemorated on February 4 to make people aware of this dreaded disease, its detection, and its prevention. Despite the vast advancements in cancer care, many are denied primary health care based on multiple factors, such as gender discrimination – even men hesitate to take treatment for prostate & penile cancers.

There are different approaches for reducing the inequity in healthcare services: strengthening community-based primary healthcare, public education, sensitization about cancer prevention and its treatment, making services available at affordable rates, government sector maximizing their reach to the poor and underprivileged. We will achieve health equity when every person has reached their full health potential without barriers or limitations created by social position or other socially or commercially determined circumstances.

Dr. Bharat Ashok Vaswani, MD (General Medicine), DM (Medical Oncology), MRCP-UK (Medical Oncology) ECMO, PDCR, Senior Medical Oncologist and Hematologist – Yashoda Hospital, Secunderabad

World Cancer Day is celebrated on 4 Feb every year to create awareness among the public regarding this deadly disease and also educate them regarding diagnosis, prevention and care. Triennially, a new theme is proposed- and the theme for 2022-24 is “Close the care gap”. It has been observed that in a vast country like India, there is inequality in the provision of care based on sociodemographic conditions. Hence, it is imperative to break the barriers of location, and socioeconomic status and close the “gap”. Let us aim to unite our voices and take action. Let us take a pledge this year that we will educate our near and dear ones regarding the adoption of healthy lifestyle practices, screening, early diagnosis and different modes of treatment. We should contribute in every possible way to fight this deadly disease and make its treatment available to each and every person!

Dr. P Vijay Karan Reddy, MD RT, FUICC (US), FAROI (US), FUICC (UK), ESMO (MED ONC), AMPH  Consultant Oncologist – Apollo Cancer Institute, Hyderabad

Cancer is the leading cause of death worldwide, and about 10 to 12 lakh cases are diagnosed every year in India. Every year, February 4th gives us a chance to spread awareness about its prevention and early detection. This year’s theme is “unifying our voices and taking action to close the care gap.” It’s a plea for us to raise our voices against cancer.

Your “part” in this battle could be anything from promising to eat healthy, stopping smoking, exercising daily, educating others about cancer, etc. We should pledge to do the same against cancer, to not only protect ourselves from cancer but to do the same for our family, friends, and community. As a community, we should also strive to close the access gap for cancer care.

Dr. Chinna Babu, Clinical Director & Surgical Oncologist- Yashoda Hospital, Hyderabad

Today, we have an opportunity for everyone to work together to defeat this disease. To eliminate the inequity and gender bias of this disease, we must be informed and embrace preventive strategies. Prevent the preventable! It is high time we eradicate cervical cancer! Even as we have highly effective vaccines available. A simple vaccination is highly protective! We all must raise awareness and focus on early detection through a thorough screening. We must reduce cancer care disparities between urban and rural areas, between rich and poor people, and between haves and have-nots. Let us close the care gap in cancer and conquer it. Let us all celebrate life, spread awareness, and hope that cancer can be conquered.
