  • LANXESS Q3 sales up 38.2% at EUR 2.185 billion

LANXESS Q3 sales up 38.2% at EUR 2.185 billion

EBITDA pre exceptionals increase 4.8 percent to EUR 240 million

Mumbai, December 06: In a challenging environment with a continued rise in energy and raw material costs, the specialty chemicals company LANXESS delivered good results for the third quarter of 2022: Sales increased by a significant 38.2 percent from EUR 1.581 billion in the prior-year quarter to EUR 2.185 billion. EBITDA pre-exceptionals reached EUR 240 million, growing by 4.8 percent compared to the previous year’s figure of EUR 229 million.

The good figures show that our strategy is taking us in the right direction. We are much more stable in turbulent times thanks to our focus on less cyclical specialty chemicals. Midway through the year, we strengthened our Consumer Protection segment again by acquiring the Microbial Control business from IFF, and this has already paid off in the past quarter,” said Matthias Zachert, Chairman of the Board of Management of LANXESS AG. “However, we have already seen waning demand in some areas and an overall decline in the volume sold. In the fourth quarter, the headwind will blow even stronger due to further rises in energy prices and the threat of recession.”

LANXESS has specified its guidance for the full fiscal year 2022. The Group expects a net income of between EUR 900 million and EUR 950 million, which would thus be well above the adjusted prior-year level of EUR 815 million. Previously, the Group anticipated EBITDA pre-exceptionals of between EUR 900 million and EUR 1 billion.

Net income from continuing operations amounted to EUR 84 million in the third quarter, compared with EUR 40 million in the prior-year period.

In addition to the Additives businesses, the development in the Consumer Protection segment, which the Group has strategically built up in recent years, was particularly positive. The Microbial Control business acquired from the U.S. corporation International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF) as of July 1, 2022, has already made a significant contribution to the segment’s good earnings as well as the businesses of Emerald Kalama Chemical acquired in 2021. LANXESS passed on the further increase in energy and raw material costs via higher selling prices. Exchange rates also positively affected earnings in all segments, while demand weakened in some customer industries such as construction. The EBITDA margin pre-exceptionals decreased to 11.0 percent in the third quarter, against 14.5 percent in the prior-year quarter.

  • After winning in the Supreme Court of India against AICTE, IIPM’s Arindam Chaudhuri launches a new program

After winning in the Supreme Court of India against AICTE, IIPM’s Arindam Chaudhuri launches a new program

Dr. Arindam Chaudhuri, Honorary Director at IIPM Think Tank

New Delhi, December 06: IIPM’s Arindam Chaudhuri has never shied away from being vocal about the superiority of IIPM programs in Management & Entrepreneurship. After facing a long battle against AICTE & UGC and emerging victorious against both, he is all set to redefine Entrepreneurial education again.

Under his guidance, IIPM is set to launch the new Year Program in Disruptive Entrepreneurship. This is unique because he believes management education is old school, and the new buzzword is Disruption. Being a Disruptor himself in the world of Management Education, we would trust the Management Guru and author of 14 books on his expertise in understanding Disruption.

Talking of Disruption, one has to ask him about his long battle with regulators and what really happened.

Says Arindam, ”Well, it is all documented in our website (http://www.iipm.in/iipm-is-grateful-to-the-supreme-court-of-india.html). The battle started in 2004. But upon our submissions, on 09.02.04, AICTE wrote —based on the recommendations of the high power committee on the prevention of malpractices in Technical Education constituted by the chairman AICTE, it has been decided that no further action is required to be taken against IIPM regarding the conduct of unapproved courses. THIS WAS OUR FIRST WIN from within AICTE itself. However, later it went against its own recommendation and again sent notices to IIPM. In between, UGC also jumped into the fray. The Hon’ble High Court of Delhi in W.P. (C) No. 4567 of 2008, vide Order dated 27.06.2008, then clearly directed UGC to remove the name of IIPM from the list of state-wise fake universities. THIS WAS OUR SECOND WIN which has been PERMANENT wrt the issue of UGC, and it’s a fake claim about IIPM being a fake university”.

“Unfortunately, media never highlighted this aspect”, continues Arindam, “Then came our victory against AICTE’s further notices where the HC, in an order dated 30.05.13, wrote: We do not see any merits in the submission of learned counsel for the respondent. In view of the judgment of the Hon’ble Supreme Court in the case of the Association of Management of Private Colleges (Supra), clearly, AICTE is not concerned with the courses run by the petitioner. As per the findings recorded by the respondent, the petitioner is said to be running MBA and BBA courses. Hence AICTE would have no jurisdiction.

THIS CLARIFIES THAT IN TERMS OF AICTE, IIPM PROGRAMS WERE PERFECTLY LEGAL. But AICTE went to the SC, and out there, finally, we won in a bench headed by the Honourable Chief Justice himself where the order stated clearly—The question as to whether the MBA course comes within the expression “technical education” under Section 2(g) of the All India Council for Technical Education Act, has been answered in the negative in Association of Management of Private Colleges vs All India Council for Technical Education and Other (2013) 8 SCC 271. We, therefore, will have no ground to interfere with the orders impugned in the special leave petitions. The same is, accordingly, dismissed.”

So does he still plan to stay out of the jurisdiction of the AICTE & UGC?

Arindam emphatically says, “Worldwide, there are thousands of great private institutions, and we consider ourselves a pioneer in private education in India and are very proud of it.”

The new Disruption program at IIPM commences in 2023 when IIPM celebrates its Golden Jubilee.

Global Road Construction & Safety Conference 2022

New Delhi (India), December 5: In the pink winters of Delhi, the Taj Palace, New Delhi, witnessed the warmth of immersive deliberations by the confluence of Government, Industry, and Academia on innovative technologies, which can redefine the future of road construction, financing and safety in India at the Global Road Construction & Safety Conference 2022 (GRC – 2022) on 30th November.

The conference’s agenda was “Building Green & Sustainable Infrastructure with New Age Technologies and Road Safety 2.0.” The conference was collaborated by CRRI and supported by Ease of Doing Business (EODB).

The GRC-2022 conference was spread over 11 sessions of discussions & presentations over a long day without any tea/coffee break with power-packed agenda till 9 PM, where over 50 speakers from various organisations in this field participated. The conference was attended by over 400 delegates from India and overseas from the road construction industry, equipment manufacturers, IoT experts, and Drone operators.

The speakers included 07 professors from top IITs, including Prof Bahia, who came from USA for this conference; more than 10 senior government officers from Niti Aayog, MoRTH, NHAI, CRRI, CPWD, RITES & IRCON; over 20 speakers from the industry leaders Ashoka Buildcon, G R Infraprojects Ltd, Cube Highways, OSE, L&T, 3M, Keltron, Park+, Humasafer App, BITCOL, HP, Indian Oil and over 15 Subject matter Experts and participant from World Bank.

Welcoming the delegates and speakers, Chairman of the organising committee, Shri Akhilesh Srivastava, Ex CGM–NHAI, World Economic Forum, External Advisor McKinsey & Co, IT Advisor to Uttarakhand Government and Road Safety Brand Ambassador of International Road Federation (IC), stressed the need of Innovation in the construction industry to achieve scale & speed for building infrastructure to meet the vision of Honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi of a fully developed nation by 2047. He said the desired Speed and Scale couldn’t be achieved without Innovation. He stressed the need for new construction technologies which reduce time & cost and new greener and more cost-effective materials which lead towards Net Zero and Zero fatalities on roads with new-age technologies to assist drivers & vehicles.

The stimulating deliberations took place on these five major themes:

    1. Innovative technologies in road construction to optimise cost & save time,
    2. New sustainable and green construction materials with the most negligible carbon emission,
    3. New-age road safety technologies to reduce road fatalities,
    4. Emerging financing trends in the road sector and
    5. How to reduce carbon emission in road construction- a step towards Net Zero in road construction.

In the opening address, Prof (Dr) Manoranjan Parida, Director – CSIR – Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), highlighted the innovative research works being done by the CCRI.

Shri Nirmal Singh, Ex-DG Ministry of Road Transport & Highways and Secretary General Indian Road Congress; NHAI Member(Project), Shri R K Pandey; Advisor (Infrastructure & Transportation) Niti Aayog Shri Sudhendu J Sinha, and construction industry veteran Dr P R Swarup, Director General of Construction Industry Development Council, gave keynote addresses and highlighted the need of innovative technologies in road construction and the need capacity building to implement these on the ground.

The budgetary allocation has increased from INR 33,414 crores (Financial Year 2015) to INR 1,83,101 crores (Financial Year 2022). But, we can’t rely on government support perennially and need to innovate new financing models to build and maintain better & safe roads. Mr Sajany Varma, General Manager (Fin) NHAI, highlighted the government initiatives of new finance models through TOT (Toll Operate & Transfer), InvIT and SPVs. The speaker stressed that the government would shortly list InvITs on the stock market so that retail investors can trade units, creating an opportunity for the common person to invest in infrastructure projects.

The sessions dealing with the New Construction & technologies were dealt with in much detail. Professors from IITs suggested innovative bituminous design mixes and cost-effective new materials as possible substitutes. The industry leaders shared their practical experiences of innovations in improving the construction process and optimisation. They also highlighted that the increasing cost of conventional construction materials severely affects the health of the projects. They stressed the urgent need for alternative materials to reduce volatility.

Awards for the 06 best research papers and technologies were given to encourage innovation and applied research in this sector. The awards winners included Dr Ambika Behl, Principal Scientist, CRRI, Prof Dhramveer from IIT Mumbai, Prof Nikhil Saboo from IIT Roorkee, Prof Agnivesh Pani from IIT (BHU) Varanasi, and Ms Atasi Das from G R Infra Ltd.

Chairing the road safety session, Shri Akhilesh Srivastava highlighted that it is impossible to improve road safety without using the latest technologies. The conventional methods of road safety are not yielding desired results, as evident from the fact that despite all efforts by MoRTH & NHAI, fatalities on roads increased by 16% in 2021 from 2020. NHAI CGM Mr Naqvi highlighted the road safety measures being taken by NHAI. The session deliberated upon the safety measures with the help of AI, Telematics & Data Analysis. Mr Akhilesh stresses that we need technology to assist drivers in making them safer and ADAS systems in vehicles to prevent accidents apart from the advanced traffic management system on roads for better enforcement.

The session’s highlight was the launch of the “School Zone Road Safety Portal” made in IRF in collaboration with 3M and Proactive Foundation.  One out of every ten RTI-related deaths among children aged between 0 and 14 occurred in India. Only 17% of schools had roads showing school zone signage, and only 11.5% displayed speed limits. How safe are our school zones if children are the most vulnerable users?

The portal will capture and highlight the gap between the road safety features available in the school vs what is required per the IRC by displaying it on a single dashboard so that everyone can view the road safety vulnerability near the schools where their children are studying and can put pressure on schools and the administrative and engineering authorities to rectify the shortcomings and make school zones safer for the children.

The main features of the portal will be:

    1. Ranking of schools based on the scores calculated based on the road safety features in the school zone and displayed on the IRF website.
    2. Citizens and parents can view the status of road safety in schools.
    3. Unique role-based login features for schools, road safety auditors and district administrative and engineering authorities.
    4. User-friendly data submission and conversion of road safety features in scores for easy understanding by common people.
    5. Escalation matrix to scale the matters with the concerned senior administrative authorities if no action is taken in time bound manner.

Chairing the most crucial session of “How to reduce carbon emission in road construction- a step towards Net Zero in road construction”, Dr Ambika Behl stressed the need for green materials and greener construction technologies. Ms Atasi Das, Asstt Vice President of G R Infraproject Ltd, highlighted the industry’s concerns about adopting these technologies due to higher costs. She stressed that ample incentives and subsidies should encourage the initiatives to embrace these. In reply to this, Ms Neha Vyas, Senior Environmental Specialist at The World Bank, explained the various schemes incentivising the adoption of greener technologies and materials.

Another conference highlight was the Curtain Raiser “Circular Economy -India Confex 2022” by Ease of Doing Business.

Shri Akhilesh Srivastava concluded the session by stating that critical recommendations of the GRC-2022 will be submitted to Ease of Doing Business to take up with various Ministries to get policies which can facilitate the construction industry and requirements of the industry will be given to IITs/Academia for carrying research aligned to the industry needs to achieve the vision of the Prime Minister of Atma-Nirbhar Bharat.

  • ACRE Unique Initiative for Cotton farmers of India

ACRE Unique Initiative for Cotton farmers of India

(Left to right) Rijit Sengupta, CEO, CRB, Heske Verburg, MD, Solidaridad, Global, Franco Constantini, MD, regenagri Certification, Dr. Shatadru Chattopadhayay, MD, Solidaridad Asia, Dr. Nilay Ranjan, Head, CSR, Vodafone Idea

Nagpur (Maharashtra) [India], December 5: Solidaridad Asia, Centre for Responsible Business (CRB) and regenagri today announced the launch of the Alliance of Cotton & Textile Stakeholders on Regenerative Agriculture (ACRE) to promote regenerative cotton farming practice in India.

The Alliance (ACRE) estimates the adoption of such a practice will help fix at least 1 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by 2030, while improving the livelihood of more than 500,000 smallholder cotton farmers and their community through various partnerships in India.

The ACRE Alliance was launched at the event ‘Reclaim to Regenerate: Towards Regenerative Cotton Sector in India’ in Nagpur, Maharashtra. Through this Alliance, Solidaridad and CRB believe the required shift in agricultural practices will be possible because of a new, more systemic form of collaboration between stakeholders across the value chain, which includes farmer groups, ginners, traders, buyers, brands, as well as agricultural and textile authorities.

The programme was attended by frontrunner responsible buyers, brands and textile value chain actors who are committed to sustainability and value regenagri cotton principles. The partners also provided a call to action in the form of the Nagpur Declaration, to be signed by responsible companies committing their support to regenagri-certified cotton.

Solidaridad, CRB and regenagri believe that regenagri-certified cotton is sustainable, ensures fair value to farmers and complies with national and international policy priorities. By working with the stakeholder groups, they are confident of achieving, in the next one year, 50,000 tonnes of regenagri-certified cotton from the fields of 10,000 farmers, and being used by 10 or more fashion brands.

It is also expected to bring about a positive shift in favour of sustainable sourcing of cotton by buyers, brands and retailers, and help them in their journey towards net-zero emission.

India is one of the largest exporters of cotton yarn, and cotton accounts for 16% of the industrial capital and 20% of the industrial labour. However, cotton production is also linked to issues like farmer distress, ecological risk, and social and environmental injustice.

For instance, cotton monoculture in Maharashtra and Gujarat faces increasing risk of rainfall variability. The production of the crop often involves indiscriminate use of inorganic pesticides and fertilisers which impacts the quality of soil, water, as well as the local biodiversity. Therefore, many brands are now interested in promoting responsible agriculture practices. Solidaridad, CRB and regenagri aim to promote and popularise regenerative agriculture which promises better livelihood along with ecological sustainability.

In 2020, Solidaridad piloted one of India’s largest regenagri certification programmes in Vidarbha, Maharashtra, supporting 8,000 small farmers in adopting these practices. Presently, Solidaridad is working with over 100,000 farmers in the region – this alone would help in reduction of about 100,000 tonnes of GHG. Recognising the efforts of the progressive farmers, HeskeVerburg, Managing Director, Solidaridad Europe, felicitated some of them at the event.

Regenerative agriculture is now being considered as a sustainable alternative to conventional agricultural system, because it balances the interests of smallholders with the need to revive the natural systems for sustainable production. Regenerative agriculture can contribute actively in reversing climate change by rebuilding soil organic matter, surface and subsurface carbon pools, and restoring degraded soil biodiversity–resulting in both carbon drawdown and improvement in the water cycle. In simple terms, it is reversing the direction of global agriculture from degenerative to regenerative; creating a system that generates agricultural products, sequesters carbon, and enhances biodiversity at the farm scale.

The aim of the Alliance of Cotton & Textile Stakeholders on Regenerative Agriculture (ACRE), which will be jointly managed by Solidaridad, CRB and regenagri, is to promote regenerative agricultural practices by:

    • Supporting the scaling up of regenerative agriculture in cotton with the vision of making India the world’s biggest producer of certified regenerative cotton
    • Enabling collaboration among cotton and textile value chain actors on regenerative agriculture across various cotton landscapes in India
    • Advancing tools/mechanism(s) that balance smallholder benefits with conservation of nature, and augment soil heath in different agro-climatic regions and landscapes growing cotton in India
    • Creating awareness amongst national and international consumers/users to demand regenerative cotton
    • Documenting and communicating success stories on regenerative agriculture in cotton
    • Engaging on policy issues related to regenerative agriculture and natural farming at state and national level
    • Building capacity and expertise among cotton and textile sector buyers and brands for wider adoption of regenerative practices in cotton and textile industries
    • Linking cotton farmers practising regenerative agriculture to initiatives focused on carbon/climate finance/ biodiversity finance

Solidaridad, CRB and regenagri are committed to impactful and inclusive programmes on the ground and are therefore joining hands to take regenerative agriculture to larger landscapes and across crops, starting with cotton.

The ACRE Alliance aims to support the implementation actions aligned with the National Mission on Natural Farming, a Government of India initiative. Solidaridad and CRB will engage with government authorities to synergise the Alliance’s plans with the BharatiyaPrakritik Krishi Paddhati Programme under the national mission, to promote agrarian livelihoods as well as address climate change and biodiversity loss.

At the launch of this Alliance, Dr Shatadru Chattopadhyay, Managing Director, Solidaridad Asia, said: “Arable land greater than the size of England is abandoned every year due to land degradation; in other words, more rainforests or savannahs need to be ploughed to replace this loss. Regenerative agriculture is the next step forward, from sustainable agriculture. For Solidaridad, regenerative agriculture is the sustainable agriculture for this decade.”

Franco Costantini, CEO, regenagri said: “regenagri has been doing great work in India where, as of October 2022, more than 40,000 farms are already certified under this programme. The collaboration with Solidaridad and Centre for Responsible Business is a great opportunity to scale up together and bring the positive impacts that stakeholders are asking for.”

Rijit Sengupta, CEO, Centre for Responsible Business (CRB), said: “This partnership will create opportunities for cotton and textile buyers and brands to collaborate with producers/farmers to regenerate natural systems and mitigate climate change. A powerful element of this initiative is how it demonstrates that farmers can be active partners in meeting the climate targets of our country.”

Farmkart founder Atul Patidar wins ‘Pride of Central India 2022’ award

Barwani (Madhya Pradesh), December 3: Farmkart, Central India’s first agritech startup, has added one more feather to its cap. Farmkart’s founder and CEO Atul Patidar has won the prestigious ‘Pride of Central India 2022’ award for transforming the lives of lakhs of rural farmers in the region.

Union Minister of Civil Aviation of India Jyotiraditya Scindia handed over the award to Farmkart CEO Atul Patidar at a ceremony held in New Delhi on December 1, 2022.

Dainik Bhaskar’s ‘Pride of Central India’ honours people with exceptional and inspirational work in education, health, art, business, and social work.

Farmkart designs innovative technology solutions for farmers who have little or zero knowledge of modern technology. The technology solutions such as UIC, U2U, agri-nidan, and rent4farm are simplifying the everyday lives of rural farmers and leading them towards profitable agriculture.

The startup shot to fame in 2020 when its technology solutions and exemplary support to rural farmers during Covid-19 lockdown was recognised and praised by the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi in the 70th edition of Mann ki Baat.

Also, Farmkart was chosen by Startup Grind, powered by Google for Entrepreneurs, as one of the Top 50 Global Innovative Startups in 2018.

The startup was conceptualised in 2017 while Atul Patidar was working in a Fortune 500 multinational in Canada, after completing 4 post-graduation degrees from the top universities of the world such as Cornell University, Queen’s University, and University of Toronto.

He collaborated with some Canadian Indians and founded Farmkart in the same year in Barwani (Madhya Pradesh), which also happens to be his hometown.

“Being from a farming background, I understood the problems of farmers. I always wanted to use my knowledge to design technology solutions for non-tech-savvy farmers who reside in rural India,” said Atul Patidar, founder and CEO, Farmkart.

With the help of these innovative technology solutions, rural farmers get easy access to the most advanced agri-products and technology. They can order agri-inputs such as fertilisers, seeds, pesticides etc. at the most affordable rates, and get it delivered to their doorsteps. The technology solutions also create a complete ecosystem by helping farmers get consultancy and equipment on rent throughout the process of agriculture.

Sharing his future plans about the startup, Patidar added, “We are working with a broad and long-term goal of helping every farmer in India go online. Currently, more than 1 lakh farmers, in around 4,000 plus locations are reaping the benefits of our products and services.”

The startup soon plans to have pan India footprints and is also moving towards Series A funding.

The advent of Farmkart has also led to creation of a lot of world-class jobs in rural localities. In the current phase of expansion, the startup is attracting talented global professionals to rural India.

Recently, Farmkart appointed Stephane Pastor as its new chief operating officer. He comes from a rich multicultural background at both personal and professional front. He is a French citizen with experience of living in 8 countries across 4 continents.

Patidar feels Farmkart’s work culture and diversity are its biggest strengths. He adds,” Farmkart was created with a futuristic approach in mind. It took shape from the combination of different nationalities, cultures, education systems, and ideas. We are all about a vibrant work culture in a world-class professional environment.”

In all, the startup employs 102 people, with its core strategy team in Toronto, Canada.

About the ‘Pride of Central India’ award, Atul Patidar feels it is one of the most important recognitions as Farmkart started its journey from central India.
