GST Reforms in Punjab – A Bold Boost for Growth – Oct 2025

New Delhi [India], October 7: Punjab just got a productivity shot in the arm. The GST rate cut, from 12% to 5%, isn’t just a tax tweak; it’s an industrial adrenaline rush. From textiles to bicycles, artisans to MSMEs, Punjab’s economy is now geared for an affordable, competitive, and employment-rich future.

The Tax Cut Heard Across the North

In India’s economic playbook, few moves pack the punch of a well-timed tax reform. The recent GST reforms in Punjab, slashing rates from 12% to 5% across key sectors, are exactly that.

This isn’t about marginal relief. It’s about turning Punjab’s traditional strengths, agriculture, textiles, handicrafts, dairy, and bicycles, into next-gen growth engines. Lower taxes mean cheaper products, fatter margins, and happier consumers. Or in simple terms: Punjab just got its competitiveness discount renewed.

The result? A 6–7% retail price drop across categories like food, apparel, and agro-products. That’s the kind of math consumers love and manufacturers dream about.

Textiles: The Fabric of a Revival

GST Reforms in Punjab - PNN

Punjab’s textile sector already has a pedigree. Ludhiana’s mills, Amritsar’s artisans, and Patiala’s craftswomen make everything from Phulkari embroidery to hand-block prints. Now, they’re getting a tax cut that could redefine margins and market share.

With GST down from 12% to 5%, the entire textile chain, from spinners to exporters, breathes easier. Costs go down. Demand goes up. And for once, artisans don’t have to choose between tradition and survival.

    Let’s break it down:

    • Phulkari embroidery, crafted by 20,000 women-led artisans, now hits global shelves cheaper. With stronger exports to the US, Canada, and the UK, Punjab’s heritage is going global again.
    • Woollen shawls and stoles from Ludhiana get new life; affordability meets global appeal.
    • Hand-block printed fabrics, once struggling with high input costs, now look appealing to boutique buyers and D2C fashion brands.
    • Women’s cotton kurtas, Punjab’s unsung fashion export, get a price advantage on e-commerce shelves and in international markets.

In short, the reform isn’t just cutting taxes, it’s cutting excuses. If Punjab’s textile players can’t grow now, the problem isn’t policy.

Footwear: The Punjabi Jutti Marches On

If you’ve ever seen a Punjabi Jutti, you know it’s an art you can walk in. Handcrafted, colourful, and globally adored. The only thing not charming? Its price tag, until now.

Thanks to the GST cut, Punjabi Juttis, crafted by over 15,000 artisans in Patiala, Amritsar, and Fazilka, get a fighting chance in both domestic and export markets. Designer brands and wedding markets will feel this impact first.

This isn’t charity, it’s smart economics. When traditional crafts become affordable, they don’t just survive; they scale.

Handicrafts & Wooden Wonders: From Heritage to High Street

Punjab’s woodcraft artisans have always been storytellers with chisels. From intricate lacquer toys in Amritsar to luxury furniture in Hoshiarpur, every product carries a legacy. But legacy doesn’t pay rent.

With GST now at 5%, these artisans finally see daylight. Lower prices make handcrafted wooden products more attractive to boutique buyers, architects, and exporters. The sector, employing 8,000+ carpenters, now competes not just on nostalgia but on price and design.

And those wooden lacquer toys? The 3,000 artisans crafting them now have reason to smile. Lower costs mean higher demand, especially from a world rediscovering sustainable toys over plastic junk.

Metalware & Utensils: Steel, Brass, and a Shot of Confidence

In Ludhiana and Jalandhar, the clang of metal is the soundtrack of livelihood. Here, thousands of MSMEs forge steel kitchen utensils, brass lamps, and copper wares that grace both homes and hotels worldwide.

With GST dropping from 12% to 5%, the industry’s biggest headache, thin margins, has just been eased. Lower taxes mean cheaper retail prices and stronger export pricing.

    Let’s talk scale:

    • Over 25,000 workers make stainless steel utensils for both home and HoReCa markets.
    • Another 5,000 artisans craft brass and copper items for the ceremonial and wellness sectors.

When taxation backs tradition, competitiveness stops being a dream and starts being a spreadsheet reality.

Food & Agro: Punjab’s Taste of Reform

Punjab feeds the nation, and now, its food MSMEs finally get a seat at the reform table.

GST Reforms in Punjab - A Bold Boost - PNN

The GST reduction to 5% for dairy, agro, and food products slices retail prices by 6–7%. The immediate winners? Small producers and women-led enterprises who now see improved margins and better market access.

    Consider the lineup:

    • Namkeen & snacks: 30,000 workers strong, now producing more affordable munchies for domestic and export shelves.
    • Pickles & preserves: women-led SHGs in Gurdaspur and Hoshiarpur find their jars of spice more profitable.
    • Honey products: 15,000 rural beekeepers see demand buzzing again, with new export potential to the Middle East and the US.
    • Paneer & dairy items: 40,000 people in the dairy value chain benefit from lower input taxes and rising consumption.
    • Papad and wadi: iconic Punjabi snacks get formalised into GST-compliant microbusinesses.
    • Dairy-based mithai: 10,000 sweet-makers in Amritsar and Ludhiana will tell you, the only thing sweeter than their product now is the tax rate.

This isn’t just fiscal housekeeping. It’s economic justice for small producers who form the backbone of Punjab’s food heritage.

Bicycles: Pedalling Past the Tax Drag

Ludhiana’s bicycle industry is not just a legacy; it’s a logistics lifeline. With over 40,000 workers employed across factories and MSME units, Punjab’s cycle makers power mobility across India and beyond.

The GST cut from 12% to 5% makes bicycles cheaper for households, schools, and government schemes. That means higher volume sales and better export competitiveness, especially in South Asia and Africa, where affordability is everything.

This move isn’t just about manufacturing; it’s about momentum. Punjab’s cycle industry now gets to ride uphill with a tailwind.

Why These Reforms Hit the Sweet Spot

Let’s skip the jargon. Here’s why these reforms matter:

    1. Affordability – A 5–7% retail price drop means more buyers, faster turnover, and healthier MSMEs.
    2. Competitiveness – When input costs drop, exports thrive. Punjab’s artisan exports to the West are back in the game.
    3. Formalisation – Lower tax rates make compliance feasible for small units. Informal becomes formal, and livelihoods get security.
    4. Livelihood Boost – Across textiles, dairy, and food, over 200,000 workers stand to benefit directly.
    5. Cultural Continuity – Traditional crafts like Phulkari and Jutti find modern relevance without losing authenticity.

This is not a small win; it’s a structural upgrade. Punjab, often viewed through the agricultural lens, is repositioning as a diversified powerhouse where manufacturing, craft, and food innovation co-exist.

    Punjab as a Reform Model

What happens in Punjab doesn’t stay in Punjab. The GST rationalisation here could be a template for other states balancing tradition and modernity.

India’s larger GST structure has often drawn criticism for being too complex or regressive for small businesses. Punjab’s move shows how targeted tax cuts can deliver visible, people-first outcomes, more sales, more jobs, more exports.

If Delhi or Maharashtra replicated this for their craft clusters or food MSMEs, we’d be looking at a national growth story stitched in the fabric of local enterprise.

The Road Ahead: Growth, but Smart

Reforms open doors, but walking through them requires hustle. The tax cut is the catalyst; execution is the differentiator. Punjab’s MSMEs must now focus on branding, export readiness, and design-led manufacturing.

Government initiatives can only spark momentum. It’s entrepreneurs, artisans, and cooperatives that’ll have to turn it into sustained growth.

If Punjab plays it right, this GST cut could transform it from a state of legacy industries to a laboratory of local manufacturing excellence.

    Bottom Line

Punjab just made itself cheaper, sharper, and stronger. This 7% price correction isn’t cosmetic; it’s catalytic. From phulkari looms to dairy cooperatives, Punjab’s real economy just got a policy that actually listens to the people who run it.

  • Advocate Ayantika Mondal: Leading Legal Expert Guiding Businesses in Commercial Arbitration and Dispute Resolution in Bangalore

Advocate Ayantika Mondal: Leading Legal Expert Guiding Businesses in Commercial Arbitration and Dispute Resolution in Bangalore

Bangalore (Karnataka) [India], October 7: With the city’s rapid rise as India’s corporate and startup powerhouse, legal disputes in business are increasingly common. Addressing these challenges with professionalism and expertise, Advocate Ayantika Mondal, Partner at Prime Legal, has emerged as one of the best advocates in Bangalore for commercial arbitration and business dispute resolution.

Working alongside Advocate A. M. Iktear Uddin, popularly known as Advocate Anik, Managing Partner at Prime Legal, she provides strategic and effective legal guidance to companies and entrepreneurs navigating arbitration, litigation, and dispute management.

A Modern Approach to Dispute Resolution

Arbitration has emerged as the preferred legal process for settling commercial disagreements outside traditional courts. It allows disputing parties to present their case before an independent arbitrator, who delivers a binding award. Unlike conventional litigation, arbitration proceedings are faster, private, and cost-effective — qualities that make it ideal for modern businesses.

“Arbitration helps clients save time and maintain confidentiality while ensuring enforceable results,” says Advocate Mondal. “In Bangalore’s growing commercial sector, it has become a crucial mechanism for corporate harmony.”

The process is particularly beneficial for MSMEs, startups, technology firms, and real estate businesses, all of which require timely and practical dispute resolution without the complications of long court battles.

Why Businesses Prefer Arbitration Over Litigation

Advocate Mondal emphasises that arbitration is not just a legal formality but a strategic advantage for any business facing disputes. The major benefits include:

    • Speed: Arbitration ensures a much faster resolution compared to regular court trials.
    • Confidentiality: Sensitive commercial data remains private and protected.
    • Cost Efficiency: It significantly reduces prolonged legal expenses.
    • Expertise: Arbitrators are domain experts who understand complex business dynamics.
    • Enforceability: Arbitral awards are legally binding and recognized in India and abroad.

These advantages have made Bangalore a hub for corporate arbitration, supported by institutions like the Bangalore International Arbitration Centre (BIAC) and BIMACC.

    Understanding the Arbitration Process

According to Advocate Mondal, arbitration begins with a properly drafted agreement. The arbitration clause in a commercial contract must clearly outline the scope of disputes, the number of arbitrators, the governing law, and the seat of arbitration — usually Bangalore in regional cases.

Once a dispute arises, the claimant issues a Notice of Arbitration, which officially commences the process. The notice typically contains details of the dispute, reference to the agreement, and the relief sought.

If both parties agree to proceed through a recognized institution like BIAC, the matter is filed there directly. Otherwise, if one side refuses cooperation or the arbitration clause lacks clarity, an application can be made to the High Court of Karnataka under the Arbitration and Conciliation Act. The court then appoints an arbitrator or directs the case to an appropriate arbitration centre.

The Proceedings and the Arbitral Award

Once arbitration begins, both parties submit their statements of claim and defence along with documentary evidence. Hearings are conducted either in person or virtually. The arbitrator ensures fair opportunity for both sides before issuing an Arbitral Award, which holds the same enforceability as a civil court decree.

This award is generally final and binding, allowing businesses to move forward without further litigation.

Why Advocate Ayantika Mondal Stands Out

Known for her meticulous preparation and client-focused strategy, Advocate Ayantika Mondal has become one of Bangalore’s most sought-after legal professionals for arbitration and commercial dispute resolution. Her practice covers diverse industries including technology, infrastructure, MSMEs, and cross-border trade.

Her key areas of expertise include:

    • Drafting and reviewing commercial contracts and arbitration clauses
    • Filing and defending arbitration claims under Indian law
    • Representation before BIAC, BIMACC, and the High Court of Karnataka
    • Mediation and negotiation for amicable settlements
    • Handling domestic and international business disputes

Mondal’s partnership with Advocate A.M. Iktear Uddin (Advocate Anik) further strengthens her legal team, combining deep arbitration knowledge with a practical business approach. Their collaborative work has helped several companies achieve fair and enforceable outcomes without lengthy litigation.

    Empowering Businesses Through Legal Excellence

In an era where every minute counts for entrepreneurs and corporations, efficient dispute resolution can make a crucial difference. Advocate Ayantika Mondal’s commitment to professionalism, integrity, and strategic legal planning makes her one of the leading arbitration lawyers in Bangalore.

For businesses facing contractual disputes, her firm offers clarity, reliability, and legal solutions that align with corporate goals. By combining legal precision with a human approach, Mondal and her team continue to redefine arbitration practice in Karnataka’s commercial capital.

From drafting robust arbitration clauses to representing clients before the High Court of Karnataka, Advocate Ayantika Mondal delivers complete legal solutions tailored for modern business challenges. Her expertise, coupled with Advocate Anik’s vast experience, makes them a trusted legal duo for arbitration and commercial dispute resolution in Bangalore.

Their blend of legal insight and business understanding ensures one outcome — timely, fair, and enforceable resolution for every client.

  • Spherule Foundation Wins Prestigious Mahatma Award 2025 for Social Impact

Spherule Foundation Wins Prestigious Mahatma Award 2025 for Social Impact

New Delhi [India], October 6: No smoke, no mirrors. Spherule Foundation just snagged the 2025 Mahatma Award for Social Good & Impact. The recognition isn’t just shiny, it’s a spotlight on hard, measurable work that’s reshaping communities across India.

On October 2, Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti, as India paused to honour the Father of the Nation, Spherule Foundation added a serious feather to its cap: the Mahatma Award 2025 for Social Good & Impact. The ceremony, held at the India International Centre in New Delhi, was more than ceremonial pomp; it was a nod to real action.

Supported by the Aditya Birla Group, the Mahatma Award is one of the highest global honours for social commitment. This year’s edition coincided with the 156th birth anniversary of Gandhi, amplifying the significance. For an NGO, winning this isn’t a participation trophy; it’s like scoring in the social impact major leagues.

Joining Spherule Foundation in the hall of fame are names like Ratan Tata, Azim Premji, Sudha Murty, ISRO, IBM Foundation, Twitter for Good, and Microsoft Philanthropy. That’s a room full of titans, and now, Spherule is rubbing shoulders with them, not just in reputation but in measurable impact.

Dr Geeta Bora, Founder & Director of Spherule Foundation, summed it up:

“This honour is not just for Spherule Foundation but for every changemaker, volunteer, and partner who believed in our vision. The Mahatma Award strengthens our resolve to keep working towards a society where equality, dignity, and compassion are at the heart of progress.”

Let’s be honest, if you’re going to do social good, having a founder with that kind of fire and clarity changes everything.

Spherule Foundation: A Snapshot of Impact

Under Dr Bora’s leadership, the Spherule Foundation is not just another charity collecting applause. This is a full-throttle, UN SDG-aligned engine impacting millions. Here’s a breakdown:

Spherule doesn’t just hand out pencils. STEM and Digital Learning Labs, remedial education, and scholarship programs are rolling out to underserved children. The goal? Equip the next generation with tools, not just toys. In a country where quality education is still uneven, this is a big deal.

Spherule’s health interventions are intense. NICUs, mobile health units, menstrual hygiene campaigns that hit the Guinness World Record, and nutrition support programs aren’t just feel-good gestures; they save lives.

Imagine running mobile clinics across regions where access is patchy at best, and then layering on awareness campaigns that reach millions. That’s a roadmap for real systemic change.

Women-centric programs are a Spherule hallmark: skill development, entrepreneurship support, and pathways to financial independence. Women who engage with Spherule programs aren’t just participants; they’re building small empires, gaining confidence, and transforming families.

India’s ongoing push for gender equality finds a practical ally in organisations like this, no fluff, just measurable uplift.

From Green Schools to renewable energy adoption and agroforestry initiatives, Spherule’s environmental focus hits multiple fronts. Climate awareness campaigns, large-scale environmental drives, and actionable sustainability projects position the foundation as a rare NGO that’s future-proofing India.

Yes, climate action sounds trendy in press releases. But Spherule backs it with measurable projects, solar panels installed, schools transformed, and carbon footprints reduced. That’s execution over buzzwords.

Disaster preparedness, rural changemaker incubation, and mental health initiatives round off the portfolio. Spherule’s work demonstrates that social impact isn’t linear; it’s ecosystemic. You can’t just fix schools and ignore community resilience.

The Foundation has created an integrated model where education, health, environment, and livelihoods intersect. That’s why it deserves the Mahatma Award.

India has no shortage of NGOs. But how many can genuinely scale and deliver measurable outcomes across multiple SDGs? Spherule Foundation is not just another name on a plaque. Its work touches education, health, gender equality, climate action, and community resilience simultaneously, while maintaining operational excellence.

In a country where policy often moves at a glacial pace, organisations like Spherule fill the execution gap. They don’t just talk; they implement. And the Mahatma Award is recognition that the needle is moving.

    Final Word

Awards are symbols. Impact is legacy. Spherule Foundation has both. Winning the Mahatma Award isn’t the finish line; it’s a green flag for the next lap. The NGO has set a high bar for measurable, scalable, and sustainable social change. To know more about their impact and projects, visit www.spherule.org

If you’re in India, pay attention, this isn’t philanthropy theatre. It’s impact that matters.
