    ISGJ and Medhavi University Launch First Bachelor’s and MBA Programs in Gems and Jewellery

    Surat (Gujarat) [India], October 29: In a significant step toward advancing skill-based higher education in the gems and jewellery sector, Medhavi Skills University (MSU) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the International School of Gems and Jewellery (ISGJ) in Surat on September 17. To address the skill gap in the sector, the collaboration is launching industry-aligned BBA and MBA courses in Jewelry Design & Manufacturing (JD&M). The courses equipped with the Apprenticeship Embedded Degree Programme (AEDP) are designed to give students in-depth industry knowledge and hands-on expertise.

    KIET Organized 24-Hour IEEE SSH 2024 Hackathon Phase 2 on Campus

    New Delhi [India] October 28: KIET Group of institutions, successfully organized the Hackathon Phase 2 of IEEE Sustainable Solutions for Humanity 2024 on 21st & 22nd October 2024. This 24-hour hackathon was a collaborative initiative by IEEE Region 10 and IEEE India Council to provide a prestigious platform for tech-savvy students across the sections of Asia and the Pacific. Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is the largest technical professional organization in the world that is dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity.

    A total of 210 teams participated in the first Phase (held online), of which, 51 teams (149 students – 87 boys & 62 girl students) from 10 states/sections of IEEE and 32 institutes of the country attended the second Phase of this hackathon. This event gave an opportunity to the tech enthusiasts to form inter-college teams, with one female member in each of them. Sponsored by TBI-KIET and IEEE Region 10, this event encouraged the participants to find innovative solutions to the real-world problem statements on 8 tracks pertaining to Education, AR/VR, Environment, Generative AI, Green Energy, Healthcare, Open Innovation, and Blockchain.

    The inaugural of the Phase 2 began with the welcome of the guests and lamp lighting ceremony, in the presence of the Guest of Honor, Dr. Prerna Gaur (IEEE India Council Chair Elect & Director NSUT), Mr. Deepak Mathur (IEEE MGA Vice President), Dr. Debabrata Das (IEEE India Council Chair & Director, IIIT Bangalore), Shri Sarish Agarwal, Chairman-KIET, Dr. Preeti Bajaj, Director General-KIET, Dr. Manoj Goel, Joint Director-KIET.

    The Chief Guest of the inaugural ceremony, Dr. Anil Sahasrabudhe (Chairman of National Educational Technology Forum (NETF), EC National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and NBA), who was present at the event online, appreciated and quoted that AICTE & KIET are working on same values. He shared, “AICTE started a series of hackathon and have conducted 9 hackathons so far with participation of lakhs of students. This IEEE SSH is very interesting as one hand, it works on finding sustainable solutions and on the other hand, it talks about humanity.”

    The Director General, KIET, Dr. Preeti Bajaj, who was the Convener of the Hackathon and Chair Adhoc on Outreach and Retention Committee, IEEE Region 10 Asia Pacific, shared that IEEE is conducting such an event for the very first time, wherein it has empowered students to create sustainable solutions to realistic industry-related problems for the cause of humanity. She further said, “Students need platforms and engagement and through IEEE, we can give immense opportunities to them”.

    The hackathon concluded with the valedictory ceremony on 22nd October, wherein Mr. Praveen Roy, (Head TTI/ Scientist ‘G’, Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India) was invited as the Chief Guest. He shared, “DST has been supporting startups and innovators since more than 2 decades now. In this era, government and institutes numerous opportunities for funding and startups, therefore, this is the right time to be an entrepreneur. The learning gained through this hackathon will help in your capacity building in the near future. During this hackathon, you might have learned about team building, problem solving and a targeted approach. Therefore, from now on, your approach must be finding innovative solutions to whatever you come across.”

    Throughout the hackathon, the participants were mentored by faculty coordinators, providing invaluable guidance and industry insights. They worked for 24 hours on respective problem statements and showcased their prototype/solution before distinguished jury panel.

    There were 5 different categories, viz. Best Solution, Best Coding, Best Design, Best Innovation and Overall Winner, under which, the winners were announced. Team MirazeX from Trident Academy of Technology, Odisha bagged award under Overall Winning, Best Coding, and Best Solution categories for Green Energy track/problem statement. Team Zen from INDIAN INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE (IISC), Bangalore Karnataka bagged award under Best Innovation and Best Coding categories for AR/VR track/problem statement. Team Suryamukhi from KIET Group of Institutions, Uttar Pradesh bagged award under Best Design category for Green Energy track/problem statement.

    The event was well managed and organized by Dr. Vineet Sharma, Dean CSE, Dr. Adesh Pandey, Dean IT, and Mr. Saurav Kumar, General Manager, TBI-KIET and the students of Team ERP, Creative Cell, and Google Developer Group of KIET.     New Delhi [India], October 26:  The ‘Bharat Microfinance Report’ released by Sa-dhan, India’s largest self – regulatory organisation of Impact Finance Institutions, has observed that the micro-finance institutions, particularly the ‘For – Profit’ organisations like NBFC-MFIs, NBFCs and SFBs should follow more caution for ensuring a better quality of assets and growth while exploring the ways of sustainable inclusive finance.  Sa-dhan released the report during its two-day 19th Sa-dhan National Conference on Inclusive Growth 2024 happening in New Delhi.

    Shri Jiji Mammen, Executive Director and CEO of Sa-dhan said, “The micro-finance sector needs to move into a sustainable mode; so as to bring a comprehensive and sustainable development at the bottom of the pyramid. Micro-finance helps millions of poor people to access credit for their various needs, especially for their economic activities, with minimum hassles and an affordable cost. The Bharat Microfinance Report will help in give a new direction for the inclusive agenda by making available credit to the bottom of the pyramid.”

    The Report highlighted that the combined loan outstanding of India’s growing microfinance sector stood at ₹ 4,42,700 crore, as outstanding against 1,613 lakh loan accounts, as on 31 March 2024 while the share of different institutions in loan outstanding stood as: NBFC-MFIs: ₹1,73,504 crore (39%); Banks: ₹1,46,909 crore (33%); SFBs: ₹74,712 crore (17%); NBFCs: ₹45,236 crore (10%) and Non-profit MFIs: ₹2,338 crore (1%).

    In terms of growth, the total of 33,644 branch network of micro-finance institutions, including NBFCs and BC companies in the country, reached out to over 6,98,000 active micro clients with a total loan outstanding of ₹2,61,239 crore; including a managed portfolio of ₹79,410 crore.

    Sa-dhan’s BMR report is based on the detailed analysis of various parameters is based on the information directly sourced from 217 Micro Lending Institutions (MLIs) which represented more than 98% MLI business in the country and also the data sourced the Credit Bureau.

    Geographically, the top five states viz. Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and West Bengal contributed 56% to the industry portfolio with Bihar alone accounting for nearly 15% of the total portfolio. The Southern region continued to have the upper hand in the share of loans outstanding, followed by the Eastern region. The proportion of rural clientele was 77% in FY 2023-24 and the women borrowers constituted 99% of the total clientele.

    The Report also marked that a reduction of interest rates from 20% per annum to 19.5% per annum will not make a difference in the weekly or monthly installment payment of the poor household. Sa-dhan has also contributed significantly in creating awareness in the financial literacy space where it supported DEA workshops.

    Meanwhile, during Sa-dhan’s Conference themed “Driving Sustainable Development through Inclusive Finance’ that concluded in New Delhi, Dr Saurabh Garg, Secretary, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Government of India, stated the Government had laid down a clear roadmap of ‘Viksit Bharat’ where GYAN – Garib (poor), Yuva (youths), Annadata (the farmer) and Nari (Women) would remain at the center of development and the Government would also focus on bringing additional liquidity into the Microfinance sector in order to strengthen financial inclusion, entrepreneurship at the grassroots levels.

    Dr Garg observed that the share of MFIs, NBFCs besides commercial banks had increased significantly over the years and in order to pursue the roadmap of ‘Viksit Bharat’, the Government would also encourage innovation and skill development of the last-mile beneficiaries where MFIs would play a big role.

    “In the next 25 years, as part of the Viksit Bharat mission, various initiatives such as innovation, entrepreneurship, women empowerment, WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene), green climate would be the key areas where major Government funding would go and MFIs can contribute,” added Dr Garg.

    He further observed that the programmes like NRLM had been well received in the country. “With about 1.44 crore self – help groups where key beneficiaries have been women, the micro-finance movement has contributed significantly. For strengthening the financial sector, more avenues like micro insurance, micro investment would be important in the next three years,” he said.

    During the Conference, Sa-dhan also announced a flagship certification course for the Microfinance sector to bring in adequate professional talent into the industry.
