  • Bhumi Fellowship: Transforming Education in India, One Leader at a Time

Bhumi Fellowship: Transforming Education in India, One Leader at a Time

Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], June 5: India’s education system faces significant challenges, including low learning outcomes, lack of trained teachers, inadequate infrastructure, and poor governance. To address these issues, Bhumi, India’s largest youth volunteering organisation, launched the Bhumi Fellowship – a 2-year paid program aimed at creating a cadre of changemakers committed to transforming education in India.

The Vision: Equitable Education for All Children

The Bhumi Fellowship’s vision is to achieve equitable education for all children in India. This means ensuring that every child, regardless of their socio-economic background, has access to high-quality education that prepares them for success in life.

Currently, the quality of education in India remains a significant challenge. According to the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2022 -The percentage of children in Std III in government or private schools who can read at Std II level dropped from 27.3% in 2018 to 20.5% in 2022.

The Mission: Creating a Cadre of Changemakers

To realise its vision, the Bhumi Fellowship aims to create a cadre of changemakers who will transform schools in the short term and lead the next education movement in the long term.

    The Whole-School Transformation Approach

The Fellowship takes a whole-school transformation approach, focusing on five key pillars:

    1. Teaching foundational literacy and numeracy to children in grades 2-5.

    2. Working with teachers to create spaces for their wellbeing and professional development.

    3. Supporting school heads in achieving their vision for the school.

    4. Building investment in parents and collaborating with them to achieve student outcomes.

    5. Improving infrastructure and providing access to computer labs, libraries, and play areas.

By working with all stakeholders in the school ecosystem, the Fellowship aims to create sustainable solutions that address the root causes of educational inequity.

The Thorough Yet Non-Competitive Selection Process of the Bhumi Fellowship

    Stage 1: Application Submission

The selection process for the Bhumi Fellowship begins with the application submission. Applicants are required to write four important essay questions that focus on their experiences, achievements, challenges faced in the past, and their inspiration to join the Fellowship. The essays are designed to help the selection committee understand the applicant’s background, leadership potential, problem-solving skills, and motivation to be a part of the program.

    Stage 2: Telephonic Interview

After the application review, shortlisted candidates are invited for a 30-minute telephonic interview. This stage allows the selection committee to delve deeper into the applicant’s profile and understand aspects that may not have been fully captured in the written application.

    Stage 3: Final Assessment

The final stage of the selection process comprises a lesson execution, group discussion, and problem-solving exercise. This stage is designed to assess the applicant’s teaching skills, critical thinking, and ability to work collaboratively. Upon successfully clearing these assessments, the applicant is invited for a personal interview.

    Non-Competitive Approach

It is important to note that the Bhumi Fellowship selection process, although thorough, is non-competitive. The program aims to recruit as many changemakers as possible, rather than selecting a limited number of candidates. This approach ensures that the Fellowship is accessible to a diverse pool of applicants who are passionate about transforming the education system in India.

    Timeline

The entire selection process, from application submission to the final interview, takes approximately five weeks to complete. The program is selective at every stage, and applicants are encouraged to give their 100% effort in each round.

    The Fellowship Experience

During the Fellowship, fellows receive hands-on training and on-the-job experience in teaching and transforming schools. They earn a competitive stipend of Rs 25,500 per month and are eligible for a Fellow Seed Fund of INR 1,00,000 upon successful completion of the Fellowship.

    The Impact

Since its inception in 2020, the Bhumi Fellowship has engaged 37 fellows working across corporation, government-aided, and low-income private schools in Chennai, benefiting 5352 children. The Fellowship aims to expand to more schools in the future.

    The Alumni

The Bhumi Fellowship has a strong alumni network, with graduates placed in prestigious organisations such as Pratham and Schools of Equality. The Fellowship also supports fellows who choose to pursue an entrepreneurial journey by designing solutions to the problems they identify.

    Systemic Change Through Leadership Development

The Bhumi Fellowship believes that systemic change can only be achieved through the development of strong leaders who are committed to the cause of educational equity.

During the two-year program, fellows undergo intensive training and on-the-job experience in teaching, school leadership, and community engagement. They also have the opportunity to collaborate with influential changemakers in the educational space and build a self-sustaining system of change.

Upon completion of the Fellowship, alumni are equipped with the values, skills, and mindsets necessary to take on long-term leadership roles in the education sector. They can choose to lead a cluster of schools, transform the education ecosystem in their community, or set up their own organisations.

    Conclusion

The Bhumi Fellowship is a transformative program that aims to create a cadre of leaders committed to improving the quality of education in India. By taking a whole-school transformation approach and providing hands-on training and support, the Fellowship is making a significant impact on the lives of children and teachers across the country. As the Fellowship continues to grow and expand, it holds the promise of creating a brighter future for India’s education system.

  • Putting an end to Smartphone Addiction: 8 Habits for Raising a Mindful Younger Generation

Putting an end to Smartphone Addiction: 8 Habits for Raising a Mindful Younger Generation

New Delhi (India), June 4: Smartphones have grown into an integral part of daily life in the current digital era, particularly for young people. These gadgets have serious concerns, such as smartphone addiction, even though they have many advantages, such as fast communication and easy access to a multitude of information. To guarantee the general growth and well-being of the younger generation, it is our collective responsibility as parents, teachers and community members in general to address this issue and foster good habits in them.

Addiction to smartphones among young people can have a negative impact on their social connections, mental & physical health as well as on the overall quality of their life. An increase in sedentary behaviour, bad posture, eye strain, and disturbed sleep patterns have all been related to excessive smartphone use, which has been shown to deteriorate physical health. Additionally, extended use of screens can have an adverse effect on mental health as well as academic performance by raising stress levels, causing anxiety, depression and lowering cognitive capacities. Furthermore, relying too much on smartphones for socialising can prevent people from developing significant verbal skills and interpersonal relationships, which can limit social interactions.

The following tips can significantly help the young generation in becoming less reliant on their smartphones and developing better habits:

    1. Set Specific Boundaries: Define precise times and locations, such as “phone-free” zones for family time, meals, and before bedtime, when smartphone use is not allowed. Maintaining these limits over time will help you establish a pattern that lessens your child’s dependency on continual digital stimulation.

    2. Monitor Screen Time: To keep tabs on the amount of time spent on a smartphone each day, use third-party apps or the built-in smartphone screen monitoring tools. Establish reasonable targets for progressively cutting back on screen time, then make an effort to adhere to them.

    3. Engage in Mindfulness Practice: Apply mindfulness practices to your everyday life to increase your awareness of your smartphone usage patterns and how they affect your as well as your child’s mental health. Take periodic breaks from the devices and do things like deep breathing exercises or meditation that can help one become more present and relaxed.

    4. Limit alerts: To reduce interruptions and distractions during the day, turn off non-essential alerts. To recover ownership of attention as well as focus, give priority to notifications from contacts or apps that are critical and silence/mute those from less significant sources; this will also help your children get distracted by multiple notifications that increase their craving for a digital presence.

    5. Set Apart Tech-Free Time: Plan times during the week or day when using devices is completely prohibited. This will allow for unhindered leisure activities, socialising, or rest. Take advantage of this opportunity to spend time with loved ones, pursue hobbies, or get back in touch with nature without the screen distractions.

    6. Find Substitute Activities: Seek substitutes for excessive mobile phone use, like reading a book, working out, engaging in artistic endeavours, or interacting with others in person. Try out a variety of hobbies to discover ones that satisfy you and make you happy without using technology.

    7. Establish Clear Objectives: Whether using smartphones for pleasure, productivity, or communication, establish explicit objectives and priorities. Make sure your smartphone usage is in line with these aims. Avoid wasting time on pointless browsing or using too many apps, which might hinder your progress.

    8. Seek Medical Attention If Needed: You should think about getting assistance from a therapist or a counsellor who specialises in digital addiction if the smartphone addiction has a major negative influence on the child/youngster’s relationships, mental health, or everyday functioning. These professionals can offer tailored approaches and assistance to tackle fundamental problems and cultivate more practical coping techniques for you or your loved ones.

We can develop healthy habits and guarantee the complete growth of the next generation in a world that is increasingly digital by encouraging appropriate smartphone use, boosting digital literacy, and placing a higher priority on wellbeing than excessive screen time. Applying these tips over time will turn into habits that the young generation will carry for life. After all, a mindful generation raises a mindful society.

  • The Future of Indian Students Abroad Amid Shifting Visa Norms

The Future of Indian Students Abroad Amid Shifting Visa Norms

New Delhi (India), May 30: For decades, studying abroad has been a cherished dream for countless Indian students for a brighter future, unlocking doors to global careers and enhanced knowledge. According to the Indian Student Mobility Report 2023, nearly 13 lakh Indian students have participated in the study abroad programmes. The US (69%) topped other popular choices like the UK (54%), Canada (43%), and Australia (27%), stated the second edition of Oxford International’s Student Global Mobility Index report. However, with countries enforcing stricter immigration policies and increasing scrutiny of foreign students, Indian students who aspire to study abroad are facing numerous challenges.

What are the Factors Driving the Education Abroad Trend?

Diversity of Academic Programs: Foreign universities boast a rich tapestry of academic programs, encompassing both traditional subjects and emerging fields. They also offer a plethora of niche specialisations within broader disciplines that help Indian students to delve deeper into specific areas of interest to thrive in a globalised world.

Global Exposure: Students get to interact with people from different backgrounds, and learn new languages and cultures. The exposure to different cultures ultimately boosts confidence and enhances skillsets as per global standards.

Availability of Scholarships: A multitude of scholarships and financial aid options are offered by foreign universities, significantly covering a portion of tuition fees. Some of the most sought-after scholarships include Merit-Based Scholarships, Need-Based Scholarships, Subject-Specific Scholarships, Government Scholarships, etc. This allows students to gain global exposure while offsetting high educational costs.

Access to Advanced Technology and Innovation: Students believe that studying at universities abroad specialise in state-of-the-art technology and innovation, which can give them an edge in their chosen field of study.

Anuj Gupta, CEO of Youngrads says, “The study abroad trend sets a multitude of benefits for students like global network building, international exposure, enhanced employability, etc. Students can embrace the opportunity to demonstrate their strong academic credentials and gain international exposure by immersing themselves in a new culture.”

    The Shifting Visa Landscape:

In recent years, there has been a noticeable shift in the visa policies of several key destination countries, including:

Australia: The Australian government’s recent changes include higher English proficiency test scores. The Temporary Graduate visa score has increased from IELTS 6.0 to 6.5, and for a student visa, from IELTS (or equivalent) 5.5 to 6.0. Financially, students must show evidence of $29,710 to be eligible for a student visa, a 17 percent hike from previous levels. The Genuine Student Test has replaced the Genuine Temporary Entrant requirement.

Canada: Canada has capped the number of student visas at 360,000, a 35 percent drop as compared to last year. Open work permits are only available to spouses of overseas students pursuing Masters or doctoral programmes. Student permit applications now require a letter of attestation from a Canadian province confirming its capacity to accommodate the applicant.

United Kingdom: The UK visa fees have surged from £363 to £490, an increase of 35%. There have also been revisions in the Immigration Health Surcharge from £675 to £1,035. The UK has also announced that international students from 2024 will be restricted from bringing in dependent family members with them as they pursue their studies.

United States of America: The US embassy has declared that all F, M, and J student visa applicants must use their own passport information while creating a profile and scheduling visa appointments. F or M visa applicants must enrol in a school or program certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program. Students applying for a J visa need sponsorship from a US State Department-approved organisation.

“The visa norm changes have diverse implications for Indian students planning to pursue overseas education. The modified visa regulations require additional academic documentation or verification processes, increased financial considerations and academic qualifications. It is crucial for Indian scholars to consider the impact of these changes on their educational goals in the long run and to take proactive steps by planning strategically.”, suggests Anuj Gupta.

    How to Navigate the Complexities?

As Indian students navigate the dynamic landscape of study visa changes, long-term educational planning becomes a critical aspect of their academic journey, including:

Students must constantly stay updated on alterations in study visa regulations to make informed decisions about their academic pursuits.

Indian students can reassess their long-term educational objectives and align them with the revised visa prerequisites.

Engaging with reputable educational consultants or advisors specialising in international student applications who can offer valuable insights.

The stricter norms in top countries like Australia including Heightened English Language Requirements, Genuine Student Test, Limited Visa Sanctions, etc. lead to a higher rejection rate for Indian students and might restrict their exposure. For Instance, the Temporary Graduate visa programs in Australia, effective from July 1, 2024, aims to realign the visa streams with the levels of study undertaken by applicants.

Adapting to the modified visa prerequisites involves careful planning and proactive measures to ensure a seamless transition into international educational institutions. By remaining updated on visa regulations and accessing valuable support networks, students can navigate the evolving study visa landscape effectively, ultimately realising their aspirations for global academic pursuits.
