Surat (Gujarat) [India], March 22: On the occasion of World Forest Day, renowned environmentalist Viral Desai, popularly known as the “Greenman,” initiated a tree plantation drive at Kapodra Police Station, creating a pocket forest.
Viral Desai has resolved to transform Kapodra Police Station into a “Green Police Station.” As part of this initiative, he developed a pocket forest within the police station premises. Under this project, around 500 trees and plants have been planted to create a small jungle, with plans to add more attractions in the future.
Speaking about the initiative, Viral Desai said, “Today is a very significant day for the environment. With rising pollution levels in cities, pocket forests like these are essential in urban areas. This pocket forest will provide a peaceful and green environment for the police station staff and visitors alike.”
He further added, “India’s cities are in dire need of urban forests because urban areas require biodiversity. Through urban forests, we can also control the temperature in cities. Public places and properties, in particular, should be turned into models of environmental conservation. This not only raises awareness among a large section of the urban population but also ensures that they benefit from nature.”
It is noteworthy that Viral Desai, the founder of the ‘Satyagraha Against Pollution and Climate Change’ movement, has been honored by three different Presidents of India for his contributions to environmental conservation. He has planted 650,000 trees so far and has also created seven urban forests.

Surat (Gujarat) [India], March 21: In response to the devastating fire incidents in Surat’s textile markets, The Man-Made Textiles Research Association (MANTRA) organised an Electrical Safety Awareness Seminar on March 13. The seminar aimed to educate traders and authorities on the importance of electrical safety and the need for regular audits to prevent such tragedies.
The seminar follows the fire accidents at Shivshakti Textile Market, where two major blazes occurred within 24 hours last month, causing damages worth crores of rupees and resulting in the loss of one life. The incidents have raised serious concerns regarding electrical safety standards in Surat’s textile markets.
Speaking at the seminar, MANTRA President Rajnikant Bachkaniwala emphasised the crucial role of electrical audits in preventing fires.
“MANTRA has been conducting electrical safety audits for years, providing reports to major industries and units in Hazira. However, it is unfortunate that despite our presence, textile traders have not come forward for electrical safety audits. Many traders fear the additional cost, but if an entire market participates, an audit can be conducted for just Rs. 6,500 per shop,” he said.
He stressed the importance of preventive measures, highlighting that most fire incidents occur due to short circuits, overloading, faulty wiring, and overheating.
“Fires do not ignite on their own and can be prevented. In Shivshakti Market, an overloaded circuit in one shop led to a blaze that engulfed the entire market. Given that textile markets store highly flammable materials, traders must prioritise electrical safety and conduct regular audits to mitigate such risks,” he added.
FOSTTA (Federation of Surat Textile Traders Association) President Kailash Hakim also addressed the gathering and expressed concerns over the outdated electrical infrastructure in the city’s textile hubs.
“Most textile markets on Ring Road are over 30 years old, with wiring systems that are no longer adequate for today’s electricity load. Traders must take proactive steps and engage MANTRA engineers for electrical audits to prevent future disasters,” he said.
He also called for stricter regulations on new electrical connections saying power distribution companies like DGVCL and Torrent Power should mandate an electrical safety audit report before issuing new connections. He said this would ensure that markets meet necessary safety standards and help prevent fire outbreaks.
New Delhi [India], March 20:Dr. Sanjay Sarda launched his new book – My Spiritual Journey of Understanding Ram on the occasion of the 90th.birthday of his mother, Smt. Lata Sarda which was on 22ndMarch.
He explained to us that this book was a continuation of his Spiritual Journey which began with Finding Krishna Within – the book which was released last year. He felt the need to write the book on Ram, because he thought that the name of Lord Ram is being grossly misused, misinterpreted and misunderstood by religious fanatics, manipulative politicians and ill-informed zealots for meeting their limited vested interests rather than understanding and appreciating the profound wisdom and learnings from the life of Lord Ram – Maryada Purshottam – which is so beautifully narrated in our Ancient Epic of Ramayana by Sage Valmikiji and Tulsi Das ji’s Ram Charitra Manas.
He has made an attempt to compile, after extensive Research, the essence of the ideology of Lord Ram – to unravel the complexity in the simplicity of Ram. In doing so he has tried to end the debate that the events depicted in Ramayana and the characters in the Epic, were not products of anyone’s imagination but actually took place.
He has shown that the unnecessary criticism over centuries on some key characters for some of the decisions & actions taken by them in the Epic, was totally unjustified. There has been an attempt over centuries by certain Groups and Western Scholars with malicious intent to purposefully distort the facts and raise doubts in our minds to degrade our Culture & Religion. This book will attempt to clear such doubts.
He has given new insights into various symbolisms that have been used in the Epic. Over centuries, many stories, myths, legends have found their way into the main narrative. These serve the purpose of folklore and popular culture and make the message of the narrative more acceptable to the general public. The message being conveyed symbolically in these stories is important, rather than any attempt to unnecessarily find logic in them.
The part of the book that is special according to him, is the deep-dive on some Hindi & Sanskrit words. As with all Convent educated, English medium schooled persons, his understanding of Sanskrit is negligible and of Hindi is inadequate. He has chosen some key words and by doing a deep dive on them, he hopes that many persons like him, with limited knowledge of Sanskrit, will be able to understand the nuances in the key characters – specially of Lord Ram & Ravana. This chapter is quite unique in its approach to understand the mindset and strength or weakness in different characters by emphasis on some key words or phrases.
Over centuries we have made a villain out of Kaikeyi for being responsible to send Lord Ram to exile. Further, we have not been able to properly justify why Lord Ram had to kill Vali, hiding behind a tree, or why Lord Ram made Ma Sita do Agni Pariksha after victory over Ravana, or why on the instigation of a mere Dhobhi, Lord Ram made a pregnant Ma Sita to go again on exile, or why after re-uniting with Luv & Kush, Lord Ram again wanted Ma Sita to prove her purity thereby forcing her to go back to mother Earth. All these episodes which our non-believer friends attack us and for which we have been defensive at best and deflective at worst, have been explained with sound reasoning & understanding in the book.
Lord Ram has influenced many other religions like Jainism, Buddhism, Sikhism and the book gives references for these influences by which these religions became richer & more acceptable.
The message of Lord Ram has travelled far & wide – not only across India but many countries of S.E.Asia. The book gives a glimpse of that.
The fundamental problem that we need to address is to understand the difference of Spirituality & Religion. Spirituality moves on the rails of Philosophy & Religion. But Religion is not Spirituality. The misuse of Ram in religion is unnecessary. Spirituality is a journey of self-realization to find the divinity in you whereas Religion is with a basic purpose to make you follow some norms/rules/rituals so that there is a routine or a pattern in your prayers which can slowly make you connect with the Divine and become interested in spirituality.
Ultimately it is a question of Faith. You have it or you don’t have it. For all those whose Faith is a work-in-process, this Book can be a good vitamin for helping their soul in strengthening their Faith.
The book is not for sale but Dr. Sanjay Sarda is wanting to circulate free copies to whoever is interested in reading it.

New Delhi [India], March 19:Story books have been a treasured part of childhood for decades. They have been the very first form of imparting knowledge, wonder and hope to children, by introducing them to magical worlds, courageous heroes, and timeless adventures. Beyond mere entertainment, these stories play a critical role in shaping a child’s emotional intelligence, creativity, and cognitive development.
However, with the increasing dominance of digital screens, social media, and short-form content, children’s engagement with books is rapidly diminishing. With easy access to smartphones, social media, and gaming platforms, children today consume content in bite-sized, fast-paced formats, leaving little room for long-form reading like books.
The impact of this shift is already evident. A 2024 survey highlighted that only 34.6% of children aged 8 to 18 in India enjoy reading during their free time. This alarming statistic has pushed educators and policymakers to take action. And while policy-level efforts are essential, parents and educators have an equally critical role to play in reigniting a love for reading among children, particularly through fiction books.
The importance of reintroducing fiction books to children cannot be overstated. Here are 5 ways how fiction books can impact a child’s development:
1. Boosts Creativity and Imagination
Story books open the door to magical worlds, giving children the freedom to imagine beyond reality. This process of imaginative thinking helps them develop creativity, encouraging them to think differently and creatively. This also inspires them to create their own stories, ideas, or alternate endings to the plots they read. This natural storytelling ability also translates into better writing, communication, and problem-solving skills as they grow older.
By constantly engaging with imaginative content, children learn to think outside the box, dream big, and approach real-life situations with curiosity and innovation. A strong imagination, once nurtured, stays with children for life, helping them become innovative thinkers and lifelong learners.
2. Builds Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills
Fiction exposes children to imaginary yet relatable challenges, allowing them to draw parallels with real-life situations. When they follow complex plots, and anticipate what happens next, it automatically sharpens their problem solving skills. Whether it’s resolving conflicts with friends, tackling schoolwork, or making personal decisions, children learn to approach problems with clarity and resilience. By constantly engaging with problem-solving narratives, fiction helps shape their ability to think logically, stay focused, and approach challenges with a solution-oriented mindset. Over time, this cognitive development strengthens their decision-making skills, creative thinking, and capacity to navigate complex situations in real life.
3. Fosters Empathy, Emotional Intelligence, and Cultural Awareness
One of the most profound impacts of fiction is its ability to humanize experiences. When children immerse themselves in stories about diverse characters from different backgrounds, facing joy, grief, conflict, or triumph, they subconsciously develop empathy. Experiencing the world through a character’s lens helps children understand human emotions and social complexities, building their emotional intelligence.
Fiction also fosters social and cultural awareness. Stories that portray different socio-economic backgrounds, cultural settings, or social challenges, subtly introducing children to the concept of privilege, inclusivity, and diversity. This early exposure helps raise compassionate, socially aware individuals who are more likely to build meaningful relationships, embrace inclusivity, and navigate diverse environments with kindness and understanding.
4. Improves Focus and Patience
Fiction books demand sustained attention. When children read a story, they must follow the plot, connect with characters, and process the story arc. Reading helps rebuild their cognitive stamina, allowing them to stay engaged for longer periods without distraction.
Over time, children who read regularly develop a higher capacity for concentration — a critical skill that supports academic performance, classroom learning, and overall mental resilience. Reading also helps reduce restlessness and improve their ability to complete tasks with greater attention to detail.
5. Teaches Resilience and Adaptability
Fiction often mirrors real-life challenges, depicting characters who face obstacles, failures, or difficult situations. Through following the story arc, Children begin to understand that challenges are a natural part of life.
Additionally, fiction teaches adaptability. As plotlines shift and unexpected events unfold, children see how characters adjust, make decisions, and find solutions. This experience subtly equips them to navigate changes in their own lives, whether it’s adjusting to a new school, making new friends, or coping with failures.
Sunita Lad Bhamray at a book reading with school children
By normalizing failure and problem-solving through storytelling, fiction nurtures strong, adaptable, and emotionally resilient individuals.
A Collective Effort to Revive Reading Habits
In a world dominated by instant gratification, social media, and fast-paced content, children’s ability to concentrate is rapidly declining. A 2022 survey revealed that 49% of parents in urban India reported their children aged 9 to 13 spent over three hours daily on activities like gaming, watching videos, or using social media. This constant exposure to fragmented information has impacted their ability to focus, read, or engage deeply with content.
The Government of India’s initiatives, such as setting up libraries in schools and promoting National Reading Days, are also a step in the right direction. However, the solution lies not only in policy changes but also in collective efforts from parents, teachers, and authors.
Parents can foster a love for reading by introducing storytelling sessions at home, curating a diverse collection of books, or setting aside dedicated reading time. Teachers, on the other hand, can incorporate book-based discussions, book reading events, reading clubs, and literary events to make books a part of everyday school culture.
The Path Forward: Growing Readers into Thinkers
The value of stories in a child’s life extends far beyond entertainment and literacy. Stories ignite curiosity, build imagination, cultivate empathy, and enhance cognitive capabilities, all of which contribute to shaping well-rounded, emotionally intelligent individuals. In a world where digital content is overwhelming young minds, books offer children a chance to slow down, reflect, and build their inner world of imagination and creativity.

Songadh (Gujarat) [India], March 15: Renowned spiritual leader and Ram Katha exponent, Morari Bapu, has voiced his concerns regarding religious conversions. Addressing the gathering during his ongoing Katha in Songadh in Tapi district on Wednesday, he urged followers to remain steadfast in the Sanatan Dharma and expressed his disapproval of deceptive conversion practices.
Morari Bapu said, “We have spoken extensively about other religions, but why have we forgotten our own? The essence of our identity lies in Sanatan Dharma, and without it, everything else remains incomplete.”
He was speaking about news reports of religious conversions occurring in certain villages and criticised the methods employed to influence individuals, particularly children, through misleading narratives. Highlighting an example from Banswara, Rajasthan, Morari Bapu cited a report about an entire village being subjected to conversion efforts.
He noted, “Jesus never engaged in such acts. He was a man of innocence and compassion. However, over time, practices emerged that led to misleading propaganda.”
He described incidents where children were allegedly taught to compare religious symbols in a way that undermined their faith, reinforcing the need to educate and strengthen their spiritual roots.
Morari Bapu also spoke about an instance where a community reclaimed its Sanatan roots, transforming a church into a temple and reinstating a priest in place of a pastor. However, he emphasised that his intention was not to create division but to awaken the Hindu community to the importance of preserving its traditions and faith.
“We are not here to oppose or break anyone. We are here to reignite what has been forgotten. True service is about uplifting those in need, not about creating divisions in the name of faith,” he remarked.
Morari Bapu also expressed concern over incidents of religious and social pressure and mentioned a video showing a young Hindu devotee being assaulted while trying to protect a temple. He also shared accounts from women who claimed they faced resistance for maintaining their faith within their own communities. Morari Bapu urged legal and social avenues to address such issues, questioning the silence of local leaders and authorities.
He reiterated that his platform is one of awakening rather than opposition.
“Sanatan Dharma stands on the values of truth, compassion and service. My appeal is for our community to recognise its heritage and serve its faith with dedication, rather than being misled by external influences,” he said.
The ongoing Ram Katha in Songadh, which is Morari Bapu’s 953rd Katha, continues to attract thousands of devotees from across the country and abroad.
