New Delhi (India), February13: My year started on a wonderfully eventful note. I have been connecting with readers and enthusiasts at multiple events! Each meeting provided a unique opportunity to delve into my book of short stories, sharing insights, laughter, and heartfelt discussions.

January started with some thrilling news. I was honoured to be named the Emerging Writer of the Year in Fiction at the Kolkata Literary Carnival on January 13, 2024. I am immensely grateful to Ukiyoto Publishing House for presenting this award to me. This award marks a milestone in my journey as an author, being the first such recognition for my book Frenny and Other Women You Have Met. The entire experience has been nothing short of incredible, and I’m deeply grateful for the support and encouragement from readers, fellow authors, and the literary community.

Soon after, I had the honour to participate in a thought-provoking panel discussion at the 47th Kolkata International Book Fair. I shared my views on the topic ‘Women Supporting Women’ alongside esteemed personalities. The panel included internationally acclaimed dancer and social reformer Alokananda Roy, acclaimed actor and author Barun Chanda, academician Dr Kaberi Chatterjee, and former Regional Director of ICCR Goutam De. The discussion was moderated brilliantly by Sohini Das, Director of the Association of Women in Business.

Alokananda Roy’s insights on gender and her work with transgender individuals were truly enlightening. She embodies inspiration for women across society, advocating for inclusivity and empowerment. Barun Chanda’s appreciation for my story ‘Frenny’ touched me profoundly, emphasizing how friendship transcends age. His perspective on gender equality also resonated deeply with listeners.

Dr Kaberi Chatterjee’s dual role as a homemaker and professor showcased the strength of women in diverse spheres. She spoke eloquently about the role of homemakers. I was glad to hear her views and how well they resonated with my book. Goutam De’s anecdotes, especially about mothers-in-law supporting daughters-in-law as also depicted in my book, left everyone inspired. Sohini Das’s thorough understanding of the book and engaging moderation enriched the discussion. It was heartening to see all panellists deeply engaged, reflecting their commitment to the subject.

Later in the month, I had the absolute pleasure of engaging with the bright minds at Sushila Birla High School, alongside actor Biplab Dasgupta, in a program aimed at fostering self-actualization and awareness on various crucial issues. Our talks centred on career guidance and honing public speaking, essential aspects for the holistic development of young individuals.

Biplab Dasgupta’s insightful research and observations on my stories added a new dimension to our discussion. His understanding of each character and storyline sparked a dynamic exchange of ideas, leaving us all enriched. The students’ participation was also remarkable. Their thought-provoking questions challenged us to delve deeper into the topics of our talks. The intelligence and curiosity of our young audience were palpable!

Kudos to the organizers for such a well-coordinated event. The enthusiasm and engagement from both students and faculty made this talk a memorable experience. Here’s to empowering the next generation with knowledge and inspiration!

Reflecting on these recent experiences as an author fills me with immense gratitude and inspiration. I am humbled by the recognition of my work and the opportunity to share insights. These discussions, interactions, and exchanges with fellow authors, readers, and students have been truly invaluable.        

January 2024 has been a standout month for me as an author, and the Kolkata Literary Meet was the icing on the cake! Kolkata exudes both sophistication and simplicity.  The city’s distinctive architecture, its hustle and bustle, its warmth and vibrance, its intellectual depth—all combine to create a unique charm. These qualities of the city were palpable in the Kolkata Literary Meet. The Literary Meet buzzed with sessions that spanned four venues and covered an array of subjects. With this Meet, Tata Steel, the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, and the Victoria Memorial Hall organized an event that brimmed with intellectual stimulation and showcased the best in literature and culture. The Victoria Memorial grounds provided a stunning backdrop to the event.

I had the privilege of participating in a panel discussion at this event. The session titled “Like a Prayer” found me in conversation with esteemed author Nilanjana Sengupta, moderated by the insightful Shahana Chatterjee. Together, we delved into the realms of home, prayer, and the multifaceted lives of women. It was an opportunity to share and exchange thoughts on the themes close to my heart, as explored in my book Frenny and Other Women You Have Met.

The discussion ranged across various social and cultural topics, touching upon the nuances of women’s lives and the intersectionality of identity. I had the chance to read an excerpt from my book, offering a glimpse into the lives of the women whose stories I’ve been lucky to tell. What made the conversation extra special for me were Nilanjana Sengupta’s insights on religion and culture. Her perspectives added layers of depth to our dialogue, enriching our understanding of the diverse experiences of women across different cultural contexts.

Shahana Chatterjee’s thought-provoking questions kept us engaged, prompting introspection and sparking new ideas. I was also impressed by the questions posed by the audience during the session. It was heartening to witness the genuine curiosity and engagement of readers. Their inquiries reaffirmed the significance of storytelling in fostering empathy and understanding.

Events like these remind us of the power of literature to ignite meaningful discourse and inspire change. As an author passionate about telling women’s stories, the Kolkata Literary Meet was an invaluable platform to connect with fellow enthusiasts, exchange ideas, and celebrate the role of stories in fostering empathy and understanding. The Year’s biggest Wearable Artworks & Crafts Design Fest will be celebrated at The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council’s Artisan Design Jewellery Awards 2024 on 12-13 February at the Ice Factory, Ballard Estate in South Mumbai. Among many design themes, ‘Jewellery as Art’ will take centre-stage at the two-day event held on the eve of Valentine’s Day to celebrate people’s love and passion for art, design and jewellery. The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) is the apex body of trade in India, supported by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry.

The final judging round for the 7th edition of The Artisan Awards 2024, Powered by GIA, was held on 22nd January, 2024. Of the 20 captivating and well-finished jewellery pieces, the jury picked out 6 winners from the two unconventional themes of The Artisan Awards 2024: ‘Unusual Materials’ and ‘Objet Trouvé.’ This edition of The Artisan Awards received more than 600 entries from around the world including India, Canada, USA, Bahrain, Egypt, Dubai, and Pakistan.

The first theme, ‘Objet Trouvé’ (Found Objects) explores art crafted from visible yet frequently altered objects that are atypical yet serve as art materials due to their non-art function.

A ‘found object’, whether it’s natural, man-made, or even just a fragment, is preserved due to an inherent connection by the artist. It can be treated as a work of art in itself, and as a muse for inspiration. 

The idea was to design a piece of jewellery that depicts the essence of ‘Objet Trouvé’ by taking an object of your past and reimagining it in a modern form. Examples of ‘found objects’ could include vintage poker chips, antique coins, collected shells, vintage Venetian glass beads, buttons, and beachcombed shells.

 The second theme, ‘Unusual Materials’ encouraged designers to create a dialogue between the familiar and the unexpected by combining contrasting materials with at least 50% precious materials. Unusual materials could include cement, titanium, wood, porcelain, bamboo, slate, meteorite, glass, recycled plastic, leather and more.

Despite centuries of artists asserting their individuality, the Indian school system persists in promoting a specific style of art, echoing Western academic conventions.

Renowned artist Anita Goel has  challenged this status quo with her solo exhibition, Avataran launched by Rajiv Mishra, Roopkumar Rathod, Parvez Damania, Rupali Suri, Roshni Damania and Atul Khatri among others. Her creations extend beyond the confines of the canvas, exploring the latent potential of painting tools, particularly the use of painting knives. Embracing the ethos of abstract expressionism, Goel eschews the notion that a painting must convey a specific message or narrative, prioritising instead the interplay of form and medium.

At the heart of Goel’s oeuvre lies a bold exploration of form, colour, and texture. Each piece beckons viewers to delve deeper, guided by recurring avian motifs—an homage to her previous series, Udaan, and a prelude to Avataran. The avian imagery serves as a narrative thread, inviting observers to uncover new perspectives with each glance.

Through the deliberate selection of irregularly shaped canvases and varying thicknesses, Goel creates a sense of three-dimensionality within the confines of a flat surface. The textured layers of knifed paint engage with the canvas’s nuanced topography, compelling viewers to engage with the work on multiple levels.

Dipti Kadrekar, Nayana Das, and Neerja Kujur present animal-themed artworks, featuring bulls, dogs, stags, and symbolic bird paintings by Mukta Kulkarni.

New Delhi [India], February 8: In 2005, when her children were a little over a year old, Sangeetha Chakrapani saw an article in the newspaper that made her heart thud painfully. ‘The ten signs of autism’, it stated and went on to explain. As Sangeetha read on, many of the signs reminded her of Jayanthi, her third child. In the next two years, Lakshmi and Jayanthi – two of Sangeetha’s children were diagnosed with autism, a lifelong developmental disorder that affects the cognitive, social, and emotional development of an individual. While Sangeetha worked with her children with the help of professionals, she constantly thought of the road that lay ahead. It became imperative to plan for a safe and thriving environment in which her daughters and others with special needs could live happily and productively even after the lifetime of their parents.

According to a report by ETHealthWorld, about 18 million people in India are diagnosed with autism. For parents of children with autism, the goals are manifold: teaching daily living skills, helping them cope with academics, finding alternatives if academics do not work out, developing work skills, ensuring active employment and engagement, and teaching socially appropriate behavior. Through this hard-working journey between parent and child, unique strengths and capabilities are discovered that need to be tapped to their highest potential.

As the first step, Sangeetha Chakrapani established a training center, Together Foundation that imparts work skills to young adults with autism and special needs. However, this did not answer the question of what is after us. This was when  Sangeetha began developing an idea for a residential community where adults with special needs could live independently, get the additional support they needed, be constructively occupied, and live in a vibrant and caring environment. 

The Together Community at Hosur, near Bangalore, is a residential space for individuals with autism and special needs and their families. 

The project has been founded and conceptualized by Together Foundation along with Vedaanta Senior Living as a partner. It is a 40-unit community consisting of furnished studio apartments (for special adults) and independent villa accommodation (for parents).

The community is developed and managed by Vedaanta Senior Living, experts in senior living care who will oversee services across food and beverage, safety, maintenance, and other aspects of the gated community. Together Foundation will design, implement, and oversee the welfare, care, and overall skill development of special needs individuals. The Together Community will be managed by an extensive team of people for day-to-day services, caregivers, mental health professionals, primary health center services, medical panels, etc. The customized features and amenities include large open green spaces, sensory walking areas, and a skill development center that will ensure that the adults engage in meaningful activities for nourishment. 

The vision of the community is to give special adults the care that they would receive at their homes after transitioning to a residential community that would enable them to live independently.  

The 2 BHK villa residences for The Together Community parents will have all the features and amenities of a senior living community with the services for the same managed by Vedaanta Senior Living. Strategically located between Bangalore and Chennai, the community has easy access to reputed hospitals, Hosur bus stand, and railway station. Such a project is one of its kind in Bangalore.

Mr Vijay Krishnamoorthy is a US citizen with a 33-year-old son with autism. He is one of the first parents who will move into The Together Community. Mr Krishnamoorthy says that while the US provided an excellent state-funded day rehabilitation program for his son, it could not be the answer to the “What after us?” question. We could not be sure about our son’s safety and happiness without us in the picture, emphasizes Krishnamoorthy. Plus, residential spaces for special adults would come at prohibitive prices even for well-heeled citizens. The Together Community appealed to the Krishnamoothys with its extensively planned and thoughtfully structured concept and competitive pricing. 

Today development of the project has commenced with several parents’ villas nearing completion and construction commencing shortly for the common amenities and studio block. Together Foundation is actively working with the parents on a transition plan to ensure a smooth transition into the community in the year 2025.

What makes The Together Community unique is its parent-driven model that ensures the genuineness of care, continuity, and wisdom on the best practices for handling caregiving and nurturing. The parents will spearhead activities, depending upon their area of expertise and interest.
