Aditi Rao Hydari unveils Joy Bimal Roy’s book –Ramblings of A Bandra Boy, Denzil Smith, Nandita Puri Read, Dinesh Raheja in Discussion

New Delhi (India), September 5: The popular view is that the 68-year-young Joy Bimal Roy should have authored a book a long time ago. This comes as no surprise, as Joy has managed to convert people who otherwise wouldn’t touch books with a barge pole into voracious readers, through his writings that turn everyday people into stars, and stars into everyday people.

Named Shankar at birth, the only son of noted Indian filmmaker Bimal Roy, Joy was given a name that he proclaims perfectly matches his personality. Known for his joie de vivre, Joy sparks good cheer thanks to his characteristic, impromptu wit and big-heartedness.

    The Beginnings

A topper in English at the Bombay Scottish School, Joy was raised on books written by British authors – Enid Blyton, Agatha Christie and P.G. Wodehouse. You will detect a Wodehousian influence in the bonmots and irony that lace his written works.

A man of many talents with a creative bent of mind, Joy has not followed a traditional career path, yet he has not been idle. He entered the film world as an assistant to film director Shyam Benegal and even directed two documentaries: ‘Remembering Bimal Roy’ which critiqued his father’s films and ‘On The Threshold’ which delved into the world of mentally challenged children. He worked briefly in the music industry as an executive with HMV before pursuing his penchant for design – creating beautiful homes, dream weddings and elegant clothing – his recent work being ‘Touch of Joy’ – a saree upcycling initiative for a social cause.

A resident of Bombay, but a true Bengali at heart, this Babu-moshai will spoil you with his generous hospitality and delectable Bengali fare.

The Book – Ramblings of a Bandra Boy

Unveiled at St Paul’s Institute of Communication, Bandra by Aditi Rao Hydari, Ramblings of a Bandra Boy is a delightful compilation of Joy Bimal Roy’s articulate Facebook posts that recall episodes from his daily life, both recent and past. Each incident is a vivid description of an everyday event that blends the extraordinary and the mundane in a manner that entertains.

Joy brings to life a cast of characters from celebrities to household staff, who scheme and hatch plots, trying to present a particular version of themselves to the world but eventually revealing their true natures. Joy is very much part of these happenings, sometimes playing the main character who extricates himself and flees the scene and at other times an extra who gets roped into the action.

The book promises to amuse you with its moments of happiness and causes you to reflect about life through narratives of despair.

One of the popular characters is Joy’s Man Friday, J.  Joy and J.  engage in a battle of wits as Joy wants something done his way but J. wants to do it his. Joy produces a recipe and asks J. to follow it. J. completely ignores Joy, finding a similar recipe online which is an improvisation on the original.  Joy admits defeat but another round of jousting ensues.

There is a streak of sadness too in the stories, as Joy recalls his childhood and his love for his mother and the house in which he and his siblings had a joyful childhood.  Joy mentions his struggles with mental health and his dislike of studying and the world of business.

    Juicy stories

As an insider in the film industry, being the only son of India’s greatest film maker – Bimal Roy, Joy has witnessed and interacted with many legends of the film world.  He recounts juicy stories using discreet codes and it is fun to puzzle out who some of the key figures are.

Joy is not just a gentleman about town, he is a flâneur and an observer of the world which he so naturally translates into his narrations and portrayals of characters in Ramblings of a Bandra Boy. When you read Joy’s wry pieces, a smile breaks onto your face before it graduates to a grin, and finally a chuckle. This book promises to be yet another addition to the many milestones scaled by the reticent Joy.

    The Launch

The book launch at the hands of Aditi Rao Hydari will see  an introduction by Neale Murray, followed by the Screening of Bimal Roy Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, with readings by Denzil Smith and Nandita Puri followed by Joy Bimal Roy in Conversation with Dinesh Raheja. Celebrities of the likes of Ila Arun, Vinta Nanda, Samir Asgar ally among many others will grace the function.

Ramblings of a Bandra Boy is Joy’s ‘Kheror Khata’– a traditional cloth-bound notebook with notes on a segment of India’s uppermiddle class society.  It’s to be savoured when sitting in a comfy chair with a cup of tea and Bengali ‘jol khabar’ and ‘mishti’.

Yours to pick up a copy of Ramblings of A Bandra Boy by Joy Bimal Roy, priced at an introductory Rs 500, the book is available at Title Waves, Bandra. And enjoy moments of the masterpiece.

  • A toddler who can identify world flags

A toddler who can identify world flags

    Hridhaan Gupta

New Delhi (India), September 4: It is said that most children are born with some talent or the other. Some parents recognize the talents of their children in the early days and start grooming them. They are given a proper environment and training, which brings out their special talent. An infant from Noida, Uttar Pradesh, Hridhaan’s interest was recognized by his parents when he was eight months old. When the mother showed the child a few black and white flashcards, she noticed that he looked at them carefully for a few minutes. Round, triangular, and other shapes were shown on these cards. When he started sitting, he was exposed to colorful flashcards with pictures of animals, birds, famous buildings and cartoons, etc. In all, more than 500 cards were shown, which the child began to identify without much effort.

Hridhaan Gupta, at the age of 1 year and 11 months, has set a record of identifying the flags of 100 countries in 5 minutes and 45 minutes, which was recognized by the India Book of Records (IBR). When he was one year old, his mother and his parents showed him pictures of fruits, vegetables, and then flags of different countries. The mother, Aastha Gupta, is the CEO, and the father, Agam Gupta, is an Exec. Director of a financial company and are often out during the day. They used to devote at least 30 minutes every day to the child when they returned home in the evening. At times, he himself used to hold his mother’s finger and take her to the flash cards. The parents showed flags of popular countries, but the child took more interest in flags of lesser-known countries, such as Palau, Peru, and Halt, as their names were simpler.

Ms. Aastha, while taking to a Book of Records, said she came across the achievements of some children in a video and then thought, why not apply for recognition as her child was also able to identify the flags of around 40 countries at a tender age “One day I showed Hridhaan a video on YouTube with flags from around the world. He looked at each flag carefully. A few days later, when Hridhaan was sitting with his grandmother when she showed him the flashcards of flags, he identified the flags of 100 countries one by one in hardly five minutes. When the evidence was sent to the IBR office, it was recognized as a new record, which was a big achievement.” she quipped.

Hridhaan is fond of food and likes to experiment with different cuisines. His day begins with music, and he is also fond of traveling in a car. His mother, grandfather, and grandmother also have a liking for music. The kid remembers all the rhymes and songs, including Chakde India, which is his favourite. Being in a joint family, he plays with a cousin who is four years older than him, from whom he also learns many new things and skills. The parents now show him pictures of the world’s popular leaders. Aastha says that the potential child should not be underestimated. Bill Gates said somewhere that ‘ a child learns nine times faster than an adult and he/she remembers this learning he/she is 80 years old.

    About She Is India Organization

Founded by Richa Singh, She Is India is a platform for every Indian woman who strives to or aims to let the world see them beyond societal tags. Women are the very foundation of our human race. For thousands of years, across hundreds of cultures and amongst numerous beliefs, men have revered and worshipped women, whether in the form of Mother Nature, Durga, Kali, or Shakti in Hindu mythology or in the form of Athena, the goddess of war from Greek mythology or the mighty Amazonian Warrior Women. Cultures have woven legends around women, and poets have inked pages in their praises. Every Indian has grown up reciting khub ladi mardani who toh Jhansi waali rani thi in reverence of Rani Lakshmi Bai, the warrior queen of Jhansi.

While societies have put such powerful women on pedestals, somewhere down the line, they forgot to extend the same respect to women in their everyday lives. For centuries, the common woman has had to fight for their basic rights, be it their right to education or their right to vote or even the very basic right to stay alive. Domestic violence is another battlefield that women have been and still are fighting every day, silently, invisible.

Tapping into the theme of Women’s Empowerment against Domestic Violence, She Is India, therefore, provides Indian women with an opportunity to bring out the best of themselves by enabling them a platform to voice their opinions and break those chains of taboos, stereotypes and glass ceilings. As women’s representation matters, the platform’s motto is “She indeed is India,” and it takes bold steps to facilitate every Indian woman a chance to be the change they want to see in the world. • Release of the Book ‘WORLD UPSIDE DOWN’ by the author Ambassador Sujan Chinoy

Release of the Book ‘WORLD UPSIDE DOWN’ by the author Ambassador Sujan Chinoy

New Delhi (India), September 2: Ambassador Sujan Chinoy, Director General of the Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses New Delhi released his book ‘World Upside Down: India Recalibrates Its Geopolitics’ at the Ahmedabad Management Association.

The function was held at The J B Auditorium at AMA at a full house event, normally never seen at book launches.

Attendees included AMA members, students, journalists, industrialists, businessmen, professionals, Ambassador Chinoy’s school (The Rajkumar College Rajkot) and college friends from his days at BK School of Business Administration at Gujarat University (considering he is from Rajkot, Gujarat), and many others.

The foreword of the book is written by Shri S. Jaishankar, External Affairs Minister of India.

    About the book:

After oscillating between multipolarity, bipolarity and unipolarity over the past decades, the world is back to a multipolar moment, with the US, China and Russia forming significant poles in global power play. Power is fractured today and new permutations and combinations are playing out. The pandemic and Russia’s war in Ukraine have added to the fragility of global consensus.

This is therefore an extraordinary time for India to find its moment in the geopolitical sun. Will it play to its strengths and rise on the global stage? Or, will it remain in historic alliances? In this insightful new book, Sujan Chinoy brings his considerable diplomatic expertise to bear on the key question – how is India recalibrating its strategic thinking to make sense of a world that often, and increasingly, seems upside down?

    Ambassadsor Chinoy’s talk at AMA

In his talk, Ambassador Sujan Chinoy spoke of India’s emergence as a major power over the last nine years under a dynamic leadership. India is no longer just a bystander but is now shaping global outcomes. Under PM Narendra Modi, India has emerged as a powerful voice of the Global South/developing countries as seen from India’s Presidency of the G20. India has also taken robust steps to secure it’s sovereignty and territorial integrity against China, and has shown zero tolerance for terrorism, including from Pakistan. India’s rise benefits the world as it grapples with diverse challenges ranging from the supply chain disruptions caused by the Ukraine war to climate change etc. India is at the forefront of promoting Sustainable Development Goals of the UN, particularly gender equality, Lifestyle for Sustainable Development (LiFE proposal of PM Modi), creating transparent and accessible digital public infrastructure etc. These are areas where India has taken the leadership at the global level, in addition to providing a values based future for humankind.

    Excerpts from the endorsements:

“Vividly describes a world in flux in which India, a rising power, must contend with unprecedented geopolitical challenges and crises.” – M.K. Rasgotra, former Foreign Secretary of India

“An indispensable reference work for scholars and practitioners alike providing a rare and lucid perspective that is uniquely Indian.” – Shyam Saran, former Foreign Secretary of India

“Sujan Chinoy has made a profound contribution to India’s defence and national security community. Few have had a diplomatic career as wide as he, taking in Asia, the Gulf, Latin America, the US, and the UN.” – Kevin Rudd, former Australian Prime Minister

“A striking reminder of how artful diplomacy will be essential for the success of India’s grand strategy amid the persistent challenges surrounding it.” – Ashley J. Tellis, Tata Chair for Strategic Affairs, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace

“Deep insights into the shifting geopolitical terrain…throws light on India’s effort at reorienting its foreign and security policies”. – C. Raja Mohan, Asia Society Policy Institute

  • 6 Points on how to increase reading habit in Teens

6 Points on how to increase reading habit in Teens

New Delhi (India), September 2: India tops the world in reading hours per week, but still 1 out of three teenagers might not have read a book for fun. We Indians emphasize a lot on school studies and homework, leaving very little time for teens to read some self-help or fiction books. These are underrated without us understanding the importance of fiction or self-help books. During the Coronavirus, ebook sales were on the rise because we were locked in our houses under pressure and boredom. This resulted in a rise in reading. Reading not only faces challenges from school but also gaming, social media and animation. Today, learning apps success goes to gaming and video watching on Instagram and YouTube. What we fail to realise is that fictional reading helps in developing imagination and emotional levels in teens. They try to visualise the characters and even fit themselves in it to feel the story. The learning that they carry from each story is different, and this can even improve their creativity skills. Often, reading different types of books other than school books helps in developing long-lasting reading habits, language and comprehension abilities. While teenagers these days flip websites and ads with a blink of an eye, holding physical books and reading it for fun would be an entirely different experience for them. I am suggesting 6 points to increase reading habits in Teenagers:

    1. Weekend Reading: Other than allowing teens to watch their favourite season or movie on Netflix, give them a new book to read. Ask them about the characters and story. This will create interest in them to read the book and finish it so that they can share it with you.

    2. Boredom Reading: When they are bored and looking for online videos or chatting on social media, encourage them to read a good story and talk about it with their friends or post videos about the same on social media to help other teens get to read.

    3. Reading with friends: Time with friends should always be fun-filled, and reading should definitely be part of it. Millions of books are published every year, and picking 60 out of it won’t be that difficult.

    4. Reading with family: Family is the foundation of a good future, be it kids or teenagers. Constructive activities with family members is of utmost importance. Be an example for your teen child by finding time to read with them.

    5. 10 minutes reading every day: Motivate them to read any self-help or fiction books for 10 Minutes every day. This will help in building curiosity in your teen’s personality, and they will take an interest in the school curriculum, too.

    6. Reading for Relaxing: When they come home exhausted and tired after a long day, sometimes give them a fiction book to read while relaxing instead of television. They will look forward to this time.

While buying a book, always read about the Author of that book and also the content. This will help in picking up the right novel or book for your growing-up teen. If you want to surprise a teenager, then gift them the recently released book “Twisted Tales” a short story collection that has Sci-fi, Mythology, Horror and Thriller stories. The stories in this book are short and engrossing. They might not be able to put it away until they finish reading it.

  • “The festival of Raksha Bandhan is a symbol of love between a brother and sister.”- Radhika Cheema

“The festival of Raksha Bandhan is a symbol of love between a brother and sister.”- Radhika Cheema

Chandigarh (India), September 1:  The festival of Raksha Bandhan was celebrated in Chandigarh with the courtesy of the IKJ Care Foundation (which spreads hope and happiness among people). Many brothers and sisters participated enthusiastically in the occasion.

During the celebration, Radhika Cheema-Chairperson of IKJ Care Foundation and a well-known young entrepreneur, enlightened the importance of this auspicious festival and said that Raksha Bandhan is a festival that strengthens the sacred bond between a brother and sister.

The word Raksha Bandhan itself describes “Raksha Ka Bandhan,” which means The Bond of Protection. A sister ties the sacred thread of ‘Rakhi’ on her brother’s wrist, and the brother promises to protect his sister. As soon as the festival of Raksha Bandhan arrives, the old memories of a brother and sister become completely new as it is a bond that revives the relationship. To maintain relationships, patience, understanding, affinity, love, and sacrifice are indeed required elements.

To cherish this bond of love, threading all these in one festoon is called Raksha Bandhan. In today’s era, no matter how much progress we make, it is because of these festivals that we stay connected. The festival of Rakhi is a symbol of love. It is a representation of fulfilling the promises made to each other. It is a sacred day for brother-sister affinity when some new promises are made.

India is known as a country of many customs, cultures, and festivals. She further said that every time, festivals bring a new message for us. In today’s modern age, foppishness has become too common among people, but it is necessary to avoid it. Only tying a silk thread on the wrist can’t be recognized as Raksha Bandhan, but adding the sweetness of love to the relationship is also necessary.

The main objective of IKJ Care Foundation is to educate every child with perseverance, commitment, determination, and to develop a socially conscious society, to enhance job-oriented career skills in women, to provide medical assistance to children below the poverty line, to aware and educate people around, to promote Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, etc.

Let us tell you that Radhika Cheema, the chairperson of IKJ Care Foundation, always participates in social work. With her interest and skills, she has also become the brand ambassador for Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Ambala). She is also the President of the District Youth Development Organization (Women’s Unit).

She has also served on the post of President of Haryana State for International Human Rights Organization (IHRO), under which she promoted women’s skills.

For environmental protection, intensive tree plantation, distribution of plants, and polythene-free Ambala campaign were also started under her supervision. To distribute free food, medicines, masks, and other essential items to the needy during COVID-19, the organization supported the administration as well as provided financial support to other social work organizations.

Radhika Cheema is also recognized as a leading example of women’s empowerment. Many renowned personalities have appreciated her for her remarkable social work. Apart from this, she has also been specifically honoured in various big events.

Golden Agers Celebrates and Honours Group of 50+ Age Senior Citizens onWorldSenior Citizen’s Day

Golden Agers, one of the leading travel groups for senior citizens based in New Delhi, recently organised a group tour to Jaipur for 50+ age senior citizens from Delhi and the NCR for two nights and three days to celebrate World’s Senior Citizen Day. The Golden Agers Founder and Director, Nidhi Mehra, grabbed the golden opportunity to honor each member of the group with a Momento on this special occasion.

“Senior citizens have fulfilled their responsibilities with all their heart and soul. Now, it is time for them to enjoy some valuable time to celebrate their achievements,” says the Founder and Director of Golden Agers.

World Senior Citizen’s Day, which is celebrated on the 21st of August every year, was founded by then President of the United States, Ronald Reagan, back in 1988. This day aims to raise awareness of the contributions of older people in our society. In India, a senior citizen refers to any person who is above 60 years of age. In a more general sense, this day commemorates the achievements and promotes the importance of the well-being of older adults.

A group of more than 50 senior citizens of Delhi and NCR, along with tour captains for assistance, hopped on two luxury Volvo buses in the early morning to celebrate World Senior Citizen’s Day. Both the buses departed for a 4-star luxury hotel in Jaipur with en-route breakfast at Gurugram. The memorable trip began with tambola and antakshri to cheer up all the same-age co-travellers.

As soon as the buses arrived at the hotel in Jaipur, the senior citizen group was directed to get ready to enjoy their first day exploring the magnificent and charming palaces in Jaipur.  The second day began with thrilling gaming and inquisitive quiz sessions followed by dance and DJ numbers in the evening. It served as an excellent time for older people to relax, rejuvenate, and make new connections with like-minded people. While the guests enjoyed soft drinks, the evening definitely brought out the inner child amongst everyone. To make the evening all the more happening, Nidhi Mehra, the Founder and Director of Golden Agers, stepped forward to honor each elderly member of the group with a Momento on the occasion of World’s Senior Citizen Day.

The third day began with a morning session called “Fun n Fitness Tantra.” It served as a great source of entertainment and delight for all the senior citizens. This session was followed by a video shooting session to make social media reels. After the shooting session, all the senior citizens enjoyed a great time at the hotel swimming pool while enjoying soft music. Video reviews of the guests were also captured, and all appreciated the efforts of the Golden Agers team members.

This group tour organized by Golden Agers to celebrate and honor older people on World’s Senior Citizen Day was definitely a success. The elderly-friendly, relaxed itineraries helped them make lifetime friends, share their stories, and have the experience of a lifetime. In the near future, the company aspires to organize many more customized packages and travel groups for senior citizens. The company strives to become India’s best senior citizen group tour company.
