  • A story is all that will remain in the end

A story is all that will remain in the end

New Delhi (India), August 14: In a quest to find a meaning to life, Heena Singhal, a Chartered Accountant, went on to chase her old hobby of storytelling because what we often hear holds true—as adults, we are the manifestations of all our childhood hobbies, dreams and fears even.

Singhal began writing her novel at the same time when she welcomed motherhood into her life, and quite naturally, as she believes, her stories revolve around women-centric themes. What emerged after five years of nurturing a daughter and bringing into the world another one was her debut novel, Songs of the Reed.

The novel is a lavishly narrated saga sewn with the intricacies of love and emotions. It takes the reader to the tragic time in the valley of Kashmir and its aftermath on people who survived the war. Atmospheric as a book can be, it lets one breathe in the chaos and energy of New Delhi and sing with the melodious rivers and romantic forts of Spain all at once.  The story is inspired by the poem of the same name by Rumi, the very legendary Persian poet of all time.

Singhal believes in the invincible power of stories and their impact not only on the hearts of people but also on their potential to drive the collective emotions of the world at large.  People are known to attach themselves more keenly to stories in comparison to plain facts, and stories—if they find them compelling—stay with them for much longer, sometimes even a lifetime. Stories help us to transcend our boundaries of culture, faith, class, and tradition and even break the biases we hold for others distinct from us.

With fiction, seated on a cosy couch, one can feel both the joy and pain, or even suffering, of someone battling to survive in a distraught refugee camp in a faraway continent, all this without ever meeting them in person.

A protagonist in her own novel brought her closer to the commitment of supporting the abandoned children of the country, the count of which goes into millions. Unfortunately, these innocent little lives are found smothered in plastics bags, left to wither in the garbage dumps, or simply deserted near temples, hospitals and orphanages. All her profits from the sale of e-copies of her novel support these lost and abandoned children.

Give a child a pen, and he/she can create a marvel solely through imagination. All a child needs is a good story, but in the real world, so many children struggle to receive a basic education in India, let alone the storybooks that remain an unaffordable luxury. Apart from being a visiting faculty at the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India,  Singhal passionately illustrates books imagined and created by children and takes read-out-aloud storytelling sessions for underprivileged children.

Talking about beauty, Singhal believes beauty not so much lies in the eyes of the beholder as it does in the courage and resilience of the survivor. She strongly advocates art as therapy. A series of her own paintings, which she has named ‘Womanhood’, is dedicated to women and girls who have sailed through the atrocities of the world. The world must applause bravery, but all those women who have lived in silence need love and support too.  Singhal donates half of the sale proceeds from the series of her artwork (womanhood) to the survivors of acid attacks and is connected with Chhanv Foundation in their pursuit to empower and rehabilitate the survivors of such heinous acts.

  • Morari Bapu’s Ramayana discourse at Cambridge University: First Hindu spiritual event to take place at the historical institution

Morari Bapu’s Ramayana discourse at Cambridge University: First Hindu spiritual event to take place at the historical institution

Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], August 11: In a historic milestone, spiritual leader Morari Bapu will be holding a 9-day discourse based on the Ramayana at the University of Cambridge from August 12-20. This is the first time that a Hindu spiritual event will take place on the premises of one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the world.

The Ram Katha event will be held at Jesus College, University of Cambridge. The recital is anticipated to be a celebration of the long-standing relationship between the Indian and English civilizations. Cambridge is an inspiring city which is rich in history, culture, and world-changing discoveries. It is home to the world’s third oldest university – the University of Cambridge and has more Nobel Prize winners than any other city.

Through his Ram Katha, Bapu will be bringing together the world of knowledge and spirituality, of Gnana (knowledge) and Adhyatma (spirituality), both of which he speaks about often. Cambridge is where young men and women come for education and evolution. Morari Bapu’s narration too is a powerful transformative tool of storytelling as his discourses inspire individuals to learn and make positive changes in their lives for personal growth. The event would also provide an opportunity to explore the importance of world literature, mythology, and cultural narratives as part of a holistic education.

Morari Bapu is a leading light of the Hindu religion and propagates its rich Vedic roots. He has made Ramayana, a great epic, his medium to establish universal values of truth, love and compassion in the hearts and homes of people. In his Kathas, he makes these great Hindu epics relevant to us today as well as bringing to life these rich stories and divine characters from a bygone era. Today, millions are reading and learning from the ancient scriptures from the Ramayana to the Bhagavad Gita both in India and abroad, thanks to six decades of work put in by Bapu.

Many years ago, when Bapu first started visiting the UK to do Ram Kathas, his kathas were a way for non-resident Indians to connect with their home country; a way to expose their children to a cultural festival, to their mother tongue and faith. Furthermore, many of the children who started listening to him at a young age are now organising kathas themselves.

This Ram Katha event at Cambridge too is being organized by the youth of Britain with the support and under the guidance of Lord Dolar Popat.  Bapu’s Katha has united them and sparked lifelong friendships and a common love for their culture and heritage. Bapu’s first Katha in the UK took place in 1979; the last Katha in 2017 at the Wembley Arena brought together almost 10,000 listeners daily. Now, six years later, Bapu is back in the UK, this time at the prestigious Cambridge University.

The Ram Katha event is open to all on a first-come, first-served basis.  Parking arrangements for this Katha will be at Madingley Road Park & Ride where shuttles to the Katha venue will be provided. Vegetarian breakfast and lunch will be served to all attendees.

From former Indian leaders who studied at Cambridge to spiritual leader Morari Bapu

Cambridge is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the UK and the world. Among former students, three Indian Prime Ministers, Jawaharlal Nehru, Rajiv Gandhi and Manmohan Singh, were educated at Cambridge, as were thought leaders like Sri Aurobindo, Amartya Sen, C.R. Rao, Subhash Chandra Bose, Sarojini Naidu. Bapu often references and quotes such leaders, and this Katha will therefore pay homage to this. The event will also demonstrate the global appeal of the ancient scriptures, that they transcend geographical and cultural boundaries, appealing to audiences worldwide. The Katha is a cultural exchange between the Hindu tradition and the academic environment of Cambridge University, bringing mutual enrichment and understanding.

The universality of Morari Bapu’s message crosses the boundaries of religion and is the religion of humanity. This, together with his acceptance of all, no matter what background, religion, caste, or belief, is what brings together such a diversity of people. This is also what would appeal to the Western audience, that there is openness in all that Bapu says and does.

  • A book that Every Parent Must Read!

A book that Every Parent Must Read!

New Delhi (India), August 11: Arts-based therapy practitioner, ICF-certified parenting coach and career guide Karen Claire has spoken on the TEDx platform on the art of communication in parenting. Her mission is to build empowered children by empowering parents through individual coaching and workshops and via social media. She spells out practical and effective parenting tools in ‘Alphabetical Parenting’. Here are the excerpts from her must-read book

As parents, we often ask questions. Yet, we never think of it as an art or skill to be learnt. We are the same parents who believe in soft-skills training in the corporate world. There are many soft skills required when it comes to raising a child. The art of communication is definitely one of them, the most specific niche being the art of questioning.

First, let’s question our intent: Do we ask questions to get an objective answer? Or do we ask questions to emphasise a point—our point?

Now, let’s question the kind of questions we ask:

    ➢ Are they closed-ended or open-ended?

➢ Are they obviously probing, making the child feel like they’re being court martialled? Or are they gentle enough to make the child feel safe to respond honestly?

➢ Are your questions making your child feel they are coming from a concerned loved one or from an interrogator?

Depending on our intent, do we choose to wait for a reply or not? We need to give our children enough time to collect their thoughts, articulate them, and then share.

➢ Did you ask too many questions in quick succession, so much so that your child has stopped thinking of answers? To him/her, now, it doesn’t matter because you have already jumped to the next question.

➢ Did you create a safe space before you shot out the question? Usually, no one, not even an adult, is comfortable answering questions if they don’t feel at ease first. You will definitely face resistance from your child.

You also need to time your questions well. Listen more than you speak. Your child will feel safer sharing, and you will learn more than when you ask directed questions at an inappropriate time and pause to listen to the answer.

The hardest skill I learned as a parent was to hold space for the answer. Sometimes, we are on a roll and all charged. Perhaps, our child needs a little more time. Perhaps, our child will pause before giving an answer. At this point in time, we need to trust our children without giving in to the temptation of believing that they are cooking up a lie or scheme. Allow them their time to breathe before they reply to you and before you can come back with another question.

    Dear Parents,

You need to know. You need to ask questions to know. But these questions need to be directed with love and kindness. Your child loves talking to you. They love it when you listen to them. It is ideal that you ask an open-ended question and then follow up with questions based on their replies instead of pre-decided questions based on your own personal agenda in your mind.

If you entirely substitute the conversation with a series of questions, the communication cycle shifts off-balance, and there will be consequences that both parent and child face. You need to strike a balance.

There is one word of caution here—when you ask the question to your child, ask yourself if you are prepared for the answer that comes.

You see, I know a child client who shared in the course of the session, ‘My mum will say that I can tell her anything, but when she asks me anything, and I tell her the truth, all hell breaks loose if she doesn’t approve.’

Questioning is an art and a skill that is often a lifeline in your relationship with your child. It can be developed.

Learn the art of asking questions. It is never too late.

    Keep the faith,

    Karen.

    Reflections –

    1. Am I asking questions, or am I questioning my child? (The difference lies in your intent.)

    2. Are my questions coming from my own biased assumptions, making the question itself biased?

    3. When I pose the question, am I ready to be a part of the solution?

    4. Am I being empathetic in the way I ask the question and listen to the response?

  • Agra’s Philanthropic Icon Puran Dawar Continues to Make a Difference Through ‘Mission Hunger Free

Agra’s Philanthropic Icon Puran Dawar Continues to Make a Difference Through ‘Mission Hunger Free

Agra (Uttar Pradesh) [India], August 10: Agra takes pride in its own Ratan Tata, the distinguished Puran Dawar, whose journey as an entrepreneur, philanthropist, and social leader has left an indelible impact on the city and beyond. Born on September 26, 1953, in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, Puran Dawar’s life story is one of resilience, determination, and unwavering commitment to community service.

Coming from a humble background, Puran Dawar’s father Mr. Lal Chand Dawar, instilled in him the values of hard work and honesty since his childhood. His thirst for knowledge led him to obtain a bachelor’s degree in science from Agra College in 1971, followed by a master’s degree in economics in 1973 and law in 1976. Armed with education and ambition, he embarked on a journey that would define his life.

Puran Dawar’s foray into the business world was marked by his exceptional leadership as the Chairman of Dawar Group. He proved his mettle by establishing Dawar Footwear Industries, a venture that later earned the prestigious title of a “Star Export House.” Under his visionary guidance, the company became a major player in the footwear industry, boosting India’s prominence in the global market.

However, Puran Dawar’s contributions went beyond the realm of business. As a Member of the Board in the Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSME), he worked tirelessly to create an enabling environment for the growth and development of small and medium enterprises, which are the backbone of India’s economy.

Not content with personal success, Puran Dawar was committed to fostering collective growth in the footwear industry. In 2003, he founded the Agra Footwear Manufacturers & Exporters Chamber (AFMEC) and assumed its leadership. Under his guidance, AFMEC emerged as a strong voice, advocating for the interests of footwear manufacturers and exporters. His exceptional leadership earned him the position of heading AFMEC from 2003 to 2005 and being re-elected as President in 2009, establishing him as a respected industry leader.

Amidst his busy schedule, Puran Dawar did not lose sight of his responsibility towards society. In 1998, he founded the Saksham Dawar Memorial in loving memory of his beloved son, Saksham Dawar. This memorial stands as a touching tribute to his son’s memory and reflects the depth of love and compassion in Puran Dawar’s heart.

Puran Dawar’s commitment to community welfare was further evident in his role as the President of the Agra Development Foundation (ADF). Under his able leadership, the foundation initiated several transformative projects, including the Yamuna Frontside Project, aimed at improving the city’s infrastructure and preserving its natural beauty for future generations.

His family background played a significant role in shaping his values and outlook on life. Puran Dawar’s family migrated to Agra from Pakistan after the traumatic partition in 1947. The hardships and challenges they faced, seeking shelter in a refugee camp at Malpura, left an indelible mark on his character, instilling in him empathy and a strong sense of social responsibility.

Puran Dawar’s association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) from a young age in 1965 instilled in him the values of discipline, patriotism, and a sense of duty towards the nation.

Today, Agra stands in gratitude for the contributions of its very own Ratan Tata, Puran Dawar, whose entrepreneurial brilliance, compassionate heart, and dedication to social upliftment have transformed lives and communities. His vision and leadership continue to inspire generations, and his legacy will remain a guiding light for future leaders and changemakers.
