    July 29: Aarna Bhura, a 15-year-old student from Sardar Patel School, Delhi, was deeply moved by the story of her house help- Savitri (name changed). Savitri was just 11 years old when she ran away from an extremely abusive stepmother. The day she thought she had rescued herself from misery was just a beginning of a nightmare. Hiding in the Railway compartment bathroom hungry, Savitri was lured for food by a pleasing Aunty Dhani. For five years, she remembers being tortured, burned with cigarette stubs, beaten, and feeling ravenously hungry if she denied working as a sex worker. She never saw the sun at noon until she was rescued in a police raid. She now works as house help in residential colonies. Just like countless sex workers are pinned down in the invisible web of violence, misery, wickedness & exploitation.

    Aarna says, “This cause is very poignant as most of these women are gravely forced into the sex trade through human trafficking, and their work & living conditions are so misery-filled that any access to basic health care is also a far reach. I wish to devote quality time o helping as many of these trafficked women as possible. I firmly believe that access to proper healthcare can drastically improve the quality of these women by reducing their suffering, enabling them to take the least bit care of fighting for self-health care.” says Aarna Bhura.

    She has been raising funds to provide cervical cancer vaccination to the most vulnerable but highly discriminated section of society- sex workers. The Cervical Cancer vaccine is also not covered as a part of the National Immunisation Program in India.

    For the last three years, Aarna has participated with the NGO Sachhi Saheli and has been working to create awareness of women’s menstrual& reproductive health and hygiene.

    In the first phase, she raised vaccination costs by around 105 doses. There is no stopping her as she continues to relentlessly hold small fundraisers with friends & family to get whatever help she can for these sex workers. After completing IInd dose drive, she feels she is moving closer to the earlier goals.

    “I spent my childhood days mostly in front of the mirror,” Risha recalls, “practicing advertisement lines, dancing to songs in my made-up costumes, and dubbing cinema and television dialogues. I can bet I used to think I am the best the world has ever seen,” Risha adds, with a childish giggle that reflects her vibrance. “Of course, I did not know what modeling was, and influencers had not even arrived on the scene yet. But what I knew was that I absolutely loved the camera, lights, make-up, clothes, and performing.”

    Despite these dreams, however, Risha made a conscious decision to pursue her studies with the utmost integrity. Having completed her schooling at Meadow Brook Public School and Kendriya Vidyalaya in parts, Risha attended the most prestigious Delhi University for graduation. Her father, despite being in the medical profession, has been a guiding pillar all her life. None more so than her mother, however, who has put an equal, if not a greater number of hours into helping Risha fulfill her dream.

    Charting a Future of Grace and Compassion 

    Today, Risha is counted among the top modeling professionals in India. At a very young age, she has already grabbed the position of brand ambassador for several brands, including Prima Group, Police Mirta Foundation, International Human Rights, and the Mother Teresa Foundation, to name a few.

    The common denominator among the organizations Risha chooses to work with is their goal of making the world a better place to live in, through compassionate, inclusive, and inspiring initiatives. “No matter how big a model or icon I become in the coming years, I always want to be associated with organizations that strive to make a positive change in our society today, because that is where my core ideals also lie,” shares Risha.

    “I strongly believe that as one community, we all share the responsibility of helping each other, especially when you are well equipped to do so. In promoting the cause and needs of these organizations, I hope I am voicing their concerns before the masses that choose to follow me daily,” she adds.

    Mumbai, July 28: Karmaditya Baldota, a budding 20-year-old artist, will be showcasing ‘Xposure’ – The Art of Looking at Things Inside Out, an exhibition of X-ray art at the Nehru Art Center Gallery, Worli, Mumbai, until 31st July. X-ray art is a new-age medium of depicting concepts and objects using their skeletal frame. The art focuses on the structural core peeling away the outer layer.

    Inaugurated by Ms. Sangita Jindal, Founder – ART India Magazine and Chairperson – JSW Foundation, the solo exhibition will feature evocative large-format light boxes, with subjects ranging from nature to fast cars and daily objects. The art will compel the viewers to engage with the works and de-layer the internal beauty within the subjects. The displays convey Karmaditya’s unique perspective and are layered with societal commentary.

    A technically skilled art form, X-ray art involves composition, color infusion and image manipulation to highlight chosen areas, direct eye flow, inject a mood and make the art compelling.

    Karmaditya has pledged all proceeds from the exhibition to the Victoria Memorial School for the Blind that is helping the visually impaired lead happier, fulfilling lives.

    About the artist:

    Karmaditya Baldota is an art explorer and, at the young age of 20, has used multiple mediums to express his creativity. His repertoire ranges from the classic oil on canvas to scriptures from waste to wildlife photography. When his father bought a Nick Veasey X-ray Art piece, it immediately struck a chord and inspired him to research and adopt the technique.

    The Baldota family is an art-loving family, and Karmaditya got exposed to some of the finest works of renowned artists during his visits to museums around the world. While the museums made deep impressions on this young artist, what truly excited his spirit was the visits to small galleries and new-age progressive art that was conceptual, playful, and challenged the boundaries of aesthetics and mediums.

    Like every teenager, he wanted to shatter the confines of legacy and create a new visual language that had a deeper meaning for his generation. Karmaditya is known to skillfully weave art, concepts, causes, technology, and skill to create works that stop you in your tracks and force you to engage with them.
