  • India’s Youngest Trailblazer: 6-Year-Old Thevaky Sets World Record in 155-Foot Blindfolded Rappelling

India’s Youngest Trailblazer: 6-Year-Old Thevaky Sets World Record in 155-Foot Blindfolded Rappelling

Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], September 22: Little Thevaky’s daring rappelling record shines a light on India’s natural climbing talent, as the nation eyes Olympic dreams for 2036.

On the morning of August 29, 2025, as India marked National Sports Day, a six-year-old girl stood at the edge of a 155-foot rock cliff in Malaipattu, Kancheepuram District, Tamil Nadu. With a blindfold tied across her eyes, she grasped the rope, leaned back, and began her descent.

In four minutes and thirty-two seconds, Thevaky B Rajkumar, a Class 1 student of Good Earth School, Tambaram, rappelled her way into history. She emerged not only unscathed but celebrated as the youngest girl to perform blindfold rock rappelling from 155 feet, a feat certified by the Asia Book of Records, India Book of Records, and The Noble Book of World Records.

Born to Mrs. S. Bhavani and Mr. Rajkumar S.P., residents of Tambaram, Chennai, Thevaky also hails from Paramasivampalayam, Tirupur District, Tamil Nadu—a reminder of how small towns and rural roots nurture extraordinary talent.

    From Fear to Fearlessness

The journey began not with ambition but hesitation. Her father, Mr. Rajkumar, initially enrolled her in a mountaineering class to help her overcome a fear of nature. What started as a confidence-building step evolved into passion—and finally a world record achievement.

Her parents stood proud at Malaipattu as they watched their daughter descend with remarkable composure.

    Guided by Experienced Coaches

Behind her daring act was systematic training led by Mr. R. Thirulogachandran, General Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Mountaineering Association, as the primary coach, with consistent support from Mr. Ramanan as additional coach. They ensured every preparation step was meticulous and child-focused.

“Thevaky I saw that morning was not the same little girl I met on the first day of training,” recalled Thirulogachandran, describing her transformation in confidence and skill.

    Safety First, Then Bravery

The feat was carried out under strict medical and safety supervision. Before the attempt, Thevaky underwent a physical fitness evaluation by Dr. K. Vijaya Ragavan, Consultant Paediatrician, and a psychiatric evaluation by Dr. Vivek Arun Kumar, Consultant Psychiatrist, both from Annai Arul Hospital, who certified her fit for the challenge.

On the day, a mini-hospital ambulance from Annai Arul Hospital, Old Perungalathur, equipped with advanced emergency facilities, was stationed at the site. After the descent, nurse Reshma conducted a post-event health check, confirming Thevaky’s condition was normal and stable.

A Perfect Tribute on National Sports Day

The timing was significant. The attempt took place on National Sports Day 2025, celebrated in memory of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand. This year’s theme, “One Hour on the Playground,” urged children to move away from gadgets and embrace outdoor activity.

Thevaky’s achievement became a living symbol of that message. Her mother, Bhavani, reflected, “When trained, anything is possible.” She emphasized that while the idea came from Thevaky herself, the family never forced her into it—they simply stood by her choice.

Recognition at National and International Level

Her accomplishment did not go unnoticed. The feat has been formally recognized by prestigious organizations:

    1. Asia Book of Records – “Youngest to perform a blindfolded rappelling feat”

    2. India Book of Records – “Youngest to perform a blindfolded rappelling feat”

    3. The Noble Book of World Records – “Youngest girl to perform blindfold rock rappelling from 155 feet”

These honors reaffirm not just the uniqueness of her effort but its wider significance for Indian sport.

    Recognition from the Sporting Community

The feat drew attention from Tamil Nadu’s sports leadership. Thiru J. Meghanatha Reddy, IAS, Member Secretary of the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT), invited Thevaky and her parents to his office to congratulate them. He encouraged the young achiever to pursue her sporting ambitions, recognizing her as an inspiring face for the next generation.

Why This Feat Matters for India’s Sporting Future

Thevaky’s blindfold descent is more than a personal triumph. It aligns with larger shifts in the global sporting arena. Sport climbing will be a core discipline at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, signaling the rise of adventure sports on the world stage.

India is building momentum for a 2036 Olympic bid. Achievements like this showcase how the country’s young athletes can step into new arenas, bringing medals from disciplines often overlooked in mainstream training.

The journey also echoes the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes daily physical activity and the integration of sports in schools. For a country with vast natural landscapes, this is a call to broaden the sporting culture. With infrastructure and grassroots programs—such as government-supported artificial climbing walls, bouldering caves, belay systems, and safety harness networks—young enthusiasts like Thevaky could grow into a new generation of adventure-sport leaders, helping India expand its sporting culture beyond traditional arenas.

    A Nation of Natural Climbers

India’s mountain ranges—the Himalayas, Western Ghats, Aravallis, and Satpuras—have long inspired climbing in youth. With focused coaching and institutional support, this natural instinct can translate into Olympic-level talent.

Thevaky’s feat symbolizes the untapped climbing potential in India—proof that with safety, training, and encouragement, even the youngest athletes can take bold steps toward excellence.

    Climbing into India’s Sporting Narrative

On National Sports Day 2025, Thevaky’s fearless descent became more than a record. It stood as a metaphor for a young nation ready to shed fear, trust its potential, and climb into new sporting frontiers.

As India pursues the 2036 Olympics, the path will extend beyond stadiums. It will be built on cliffs, in schools, and through the courageous steps of children like Thevaky.

On that August morning, a girl from Tambaram—with roots in Tirupur’s Paramasivampalayam—showed India what courage looks like when blindfolded. Her rope carried not just her weight, but the weight of a nation’s sporting dreams waiting to climb higher.

  • Special Campaign 5.0: 7 Ways Sports Department Transforms India’s Administrative Excellence

Special Campaign 5.0: 7 Ways Sports Department Transforms India’s Administrative Excellence

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sport, through the Department of Sports in India, remains an excellent role model in terms of administrative reforms in its involvement in Special Campaign 5.0. This is an all-encompassing, clean, and efficient program that is a big step towards the way the government departments are dealing with workspace optimisation and the delivery of services to the people.

Building on Special Campaign 4.0’s Success

Special Campaign 5.0 is based on the exceptional performance of the predecessor. On October 2, 2024, Special Campaign 4.0 was developed by the Department of Sports at Major Dhyanchand Stadium as the Fit India Swachhata Freedom Run 5.0. It was a symbolic, fun event that combined fitness promotion and cleanliness advocacy, and it formed an excellent image of national dedication to administration excellence.

There is a powerful precedent created by the quantifiable results of the last campaign. The officials in the department in collaboration with organizations such as Sports Authority of India (SAI), Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education (LNIPE), National Sports University (NSU), National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA), and National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL) were able to overcome vital administrative bottlenecks.

    Quantifiable Administrative Achievements

The success of the campaign can be evaluated using tangible deliverables directly related to the quality of the services provided to people. The parliamentary officials adjudicated 15 pending Member of Parliament references, and this is indicative of responsiveness to legislative concerns. Moreover, 30 Public Grievances were fully resolved, and the level of citizen satisfaction increased accordingly.

The accountability of parliament was critical during the initiative. The Department had, as a direct measure of progress, two Assurances to Parliament, and high-ranking officials continued to closely monitor these measures. Such a practical method guarantees transparency and keeps the population trusting the government procedures.

    Comprehensive Cleanliness Operations

The enhancement of physical infrastructure was one of the pillars of the campaign’s success. The cleanliness drives included 44 field offices and headquarters locations of all the affiliated organisations that had been strategically identified. This policy helped to cover all the facets of the transformation process, as no facility was left behind.

The success of the reclamation of space is especially commendable. The group had managed to reclaim 12,000 square feet of unused or disorganised space. These new spaces were repurposed strategically to useful utility spaces, increasing the efficiency of the operations of various departments.

    Financial Sustainability Through Resource Management

The economic feasibility of the campaign was indicated by the collection of revenue based on responsible resource management. Scrap disposal operations also earned Rs. 1,76,000, and this shows that financial sustainability is attainable through cleanliness initiatives when aiming at environmental goals.

Such a strategy will fit into the principles of the circular economy well, with waste products turning into valuable resources. The department has gone beyond compliance and has laid down the best practices that other state actors can copy in terms of sustainability.

    Special

    Digital Engagement and Public Awareness

The amplification through social media was important in the visibility of the campaign. The Department and the organisations associated with it posted 24 strategic tweets on different platforms, using such hashtags as SpecialCampaign4.0 and SwachhBharat to reach as many people as possible.

The online communication approaches helped spread information to the people as well as mobilise people to contribute to the cleanliness efforts. This multi-platform strategy is an indication of current governance practices that integrate the use of technology to achieve greater social effects.

    E-Waste Management Compliance

Special Campaign 5.0 pays special attention to electronic waste management, with a strict adherence to E-Waste Management Rules, 2022. This emphasis is based on increasing environmental fears and creating sustainable technology disposal and replacement practices.

The scientific way of managing e-waste establishes new standards for governmental organisations throughout the country. Correct disposal policies safeguard the environment, besides securing the safety of data and adherence to the legal systems.

    Future-Ready Administrative Excellence

According to one of the senior officials of the department, the Department of Sports is fully ready to implement Special Campaign 5.0 in the most effective way possible, which is to introduce the new standards in workplace cleanliness and achieve the goal defined by DARPG.

This is not only a short-term goal of the campaign, but it forms the framework of continuous improvement of administrative procedures over a long period of time. The combination of cleanliness, efficiency and sustainability is a holistic solution to contemporary governance.

The systematic approach of the Department makes the results quantifiable, but not too much emphasis is placed on the main goals. Top management monitoring ensures accountability on implementation stages, and the cooperative mechanism with related organisations can make full use of resources and influence.

The Special Campaign 5.0 does not only imply a cleanliness campaign but rather a shift in the spirit of administration where efficiency, transparency, and the excellence of the service provided to the people is the top priority. Other government bodies are taking some of the ripple effects of the work of the Department of Sports, as it stands out as a model that other organisations can emulate in the administrative world of India.

The campaign presents the ability of strategic initiatives to attain multiple goals at the same time through disciplined performance, concentrated goals, and regular observation and evaluation, as well as ensuring the highest levels of delivery of service to the population.

JBG Satara Hill Half Marathon 2025: A Rain-Soaked Yet Record-Breaking Celebration of Running

Satara (Maharashtra) [India], September 17: Heavy rain could not dampen the spirit of over 8,500 runners who turned up for the 14th edition of the JBG Satara Hill Half Marathon, powered by Mala’s Fruit Products, on Sunday morning. By the time the sun broke through the clouds, Satara had witnessed one of its most memorable race days yet.

    Charity Beyond the Finish Line

One of the biggest impacts came through the Charity initiative, which will now support 2,000 children from more than 8 schools in and around Satara. Sports gear ranging from footballs and basketballs to chess and carrom sets has been handed over, bringing structured play and physical activity into classrooms.

    Expo Sets the Tone

  • JBG Satara Hill Half Marathon Returns with its 14th Edition – Calls Runners to Go ‘Back to Roots’

JBG Satara Hill Half Marathon Returns with its 14th Edition – Calls Runners to Go ‘Back to Roots’

Satara (Maharashtra) [India], September 4: One of India’s most loved and iconic hill runs, the JBG Satara Hill Half Marathon Powered By MALA’s (JBG SHHM), is all set to return with its 14th edition on 14 September 2025. Organised entirely by the passionate volunteers of the Satara Runners Foundation (SRF), the event is known not only for its scenic and challenging route but also for its heart, people, purpose, and pursuit of getting better.

This year’s theme, “Back to Roots – Run • Reconnect • Rediscover • Rewild”, invites participants to reflect on the very origins of movement. From ancient times, running was a matter of survival, as it involved chasing food or fleeing predators. Until today, running helps us reconnect with nature, rediscover our inner strength, and reset our lives. The 2025 edition is a celebration of this primal spirit, blending culture, fitness, and community like never before.

    T-Shirt Launch & Community Recognition

The official launch of the theme-led T-shirt and medal designstook place recently in Satara. The event was graced by:

    • Shri Santosh Patil, Collector of Satara

    • Shri Tushar Doshi (IPS), SP of Satara

    • Mr. Gaurav Jajodia, Director, Jai Balaji Group

    • Mr. Hussain Mala, Director, Mala’s Fruit Products

    • Ms. Meena Dave, CEO, India Cares Foundation

    • Mr. Nishant Maheshwari, CEO, Sportiz

As part of the initiative, 8 school principals from Satara were also felicitated, marking the start of a long-term vision to integrate sports culture in schools through JBG SHHM’s philanthropy programme.

JBG SHHM Philanthropy Initiative: Sport Belongs in Classrooms

This year, JBG SHHM takes its ‘Back to Roots’ theme beyond the race track, extending its impact to children across rural Maharashtra. Partnering with the India Cares Foundation, the 2025 edition focuses on promoting a sporting culture among young children by equipping schools with much-needed sports equipment.

Over the past few years, India’s sporting heroes have increasingly emerged from tier-two cities and rural towns. Yet, most schools still treat sport as an extracurricular activity, not as an integral part of learning. SHHM believes sport is education, fuel for confidence, discipline, and equity.

Through this initiative, 8 schools around Satara will be supported, directly impacting 1,000+ children, providing them with equipment for sports such as basketball, football, cricket, chess, carrom, and athletics. This will ensure improvedattendance and engagement – schools offering structured sports activities see up to a 30% better attendance, aid in enhanced mental health as sports reduce anxiety, build focus, and improve classroom participation, gift a life skill for the future where discipline, teamwork, and adaptability developed on the field translate directly to professional success and build equity & Inclusion as sports empower even those who struggle academically, allowing every child to shine.

As Dr. Sandeep Kate, Founder & Chief Believer of Satara Runners Foundation, explains:
“When we started this in 2012, we simply wanted to make Satara healthier. We never imagined it would become a movement. Today, JBG SHHM is not just a race but a reunion of purpose-driven people. This year’s theme, ‘Back to Roots’, reflects our belief that running, like life, is most fulfilling when you stay grounded. Helping children play is as important as helping them study. This initiative ensures that while our runners reconnect with their roots, our children, too, get a chance to build theirs through play, health, and opportunity.

    What’s New in 2025?

    • Theme-led T-shirt & Medal Designs – Inspired by Warli art and tribal motifs, paying homage to cultural roots and Indian runners.

    • New Proprietary Registration Platform – Designed for smoother and faster access.

    • Charity Bibs Initiative – Proceeds channelled towards sports equipment for schoolchildren in rural Maharashtra.

    • Community-Driven Practice Runs – 16 Sunday Long Runs and the Satara to Comrades (S2C) programme, supporting Indian Comrades participants.

“This event is special because it’s not built by a corporation. It’s built by the community. We’ve launched a new platform, trained hundreds through our runs, and continued to put our runners and partners at the centre of everything.”

    • Mr. Gaurav Jajodia, MD & CEO, Jai Balaji Group, Title Sponsor of the event for the third year, shares,

“JBG SHHM is powered by passion, much like Mala’s. As the ‘Powered By’ sponsor, we are proud to contribute to the energy that fuels this amazing event for the second year!”

    • Mr. Punit Balan, MD, Punit Balan Group, the EXPO & Lounge Partner, echoes the sentiment:
“JBG SHHM is more than a race; it’s a vibe. From the expo to the finish line, we’re proud to add vibrancy and support to one of India’s most loved running Half Marathons.”

  • Kochi Blue Tigers Seal Semi-final Spot with Dominant Run

Kochi Blue Tigers Seal Semi-final Spot with Dominant Run

Trivandrum (Kerala) [India], September 4: The Kochi Blue Tigers have stormed into the semi-finals of KCL Season 2, becoming the first team to confirm their place in the knockouts. With seven wins from nine matches and only two defeats, both by slender margins, Kochi’s campaign has been a study in consistency, resilience, and all-round brilliance.

At the heart of the campaign has been Sanju Samson. Bought for a record ₹26.8 lakh, more than half of Kochi’s total auction purse, Sanju has lived up to the hype. He has scored 368 runs in five innings, including a sparkling century and three half-centuries, and remains only 11 runs short of the tournament’s leading run-scorer, Ahmed Imran, despite having played two fewer innings. His effortless stroke play and ability to anchor or accelerate at will have made him the tournament’s headline act.

But Kochi are far from a one-man team. Vinoop Manoharan has provided explosive starts, especially in Sanju’s absence, while Mohammed Shanu has quietly stabilised the middle order. When crunch moments arrived, unexpected heroes stepped forward: Mohammed Ashiq’s last-ball six against Kollam Sailors still lingers in memory, and Jerin PS’s nerveless finishing against Alleppey Ripples showcased Kochi’s depth. On debut, Jishnu A. announced himself in style, smashing 45 off 29 balls against Calicut Globstars to guide Kochi home and win Man of the Match. Supporting contributions from Alfi Francis John and Jobin Joby have ensured the Blue Tigers always have game-changers when the heat is on.

The bowling has been equally balanced and experienced. K.M. Asif, with his IPL exposure, has led the attack, regularly breaking partnerships when Kochi needed it most. Alongside him, Akhin Sathar, Jerin PS, Srihari, Mohammed Ashiq, Jobin Joby, and skipper Saly Samson have formed a versatile unit. Midhun P.K. made his maiden KCL appearance memorable, claiming two crucial wickets against Calicut Globstars and instantly proving his value. Saly himself has been more than a captain—his cameos with both bat and ball have swung matches in Kochi’s favour and added an extra layer of leadership.

What sets Kochi apart this season is not just star power but collective spirit. Every player seems ready to rise to the occasion; every defeat was fought to the last ball, and every victory has carried the stamp of dominance.

With one more league match against Kollam Sailors, Kochi has already marked itself as a frontrunner for the KCL crown. As the tournament heads into its decisive phase, the Blue Tigers carry the aura of a team that not only knows how to win, but also how to win together.
