  • A Student Guided by the Gita: How Mithilesh Khandwala Balances Science, Mathematics and Leadership

A Student Guided by the Gita: How Mithilesh Khandwala Balances Science, Mathematics and Leadership

Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], May 20: A Grade 10 student at Adani International School, Mithilesh Khandwala is emerging as one of India’s promising young achievers in science, mathematics and economics. While his accomplishments range from national science recognition to global mathematics competitions, Mithilesh credits an unusual source for his focus and discipline—the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita.

For Mithilesh, the ancient philosophical text is not just a spiritual book but a practical guide for daily life. He often reflects on the well-known verse, “Karmanye vadhikaraste ma phaleshu kadachana,” which emphasizes performing one’s duty without attachment to the outcome.

“Krishna does not tell Arjuna to step away from his battle,” Mithilesh explains. “He tells him to fight without anxiety about the result. For me, an examination or a science project is simply another battlefield. I focus on my effort and leave the rest aside.”

Mentoring Young Students Through the Gita

Inspired by this philosophy and guided by Gyanvatsal Swami, Mithilesh runs an initiative titled “Bhagavad Gita: Bharat ni Adhyatmik Virasat.” Through the program, he conducts interactive sessions for younger students, explaining the meaning of selected shlokas and connecting them to everyday lessons such as discipline, resilience, and integrity.

Teaching the verses, he says, helps him apply their message in his own life.

Gold Medal at the IRIS National Fair

Mithilesh recently earned national recognition at the IRIS National Fair held in New Delhi. The event, formally known as the Initiative for Research and Innovation in STEM (IRIS) fair, brings together some of the country’s most promising young scientific researchers.

Competing in the Earth and Environmental Science category, Mithilesh won the Gold Medal for his research project titled “Data-Driven Analysis of Energy Balance and Surface Flux Patterns over Indian Agro-Ecosystems.”

The study integrates satellite observations and ground-based data to estimate crop water requirements and analyze environmental processes affecting agriculture. The findings aim to support efficient irrigation planning and sustainable water management for farmers.

The research aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Per Drop More Crop” and contributes to global sustainability goals under the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 15 (Life on Land).

His project was shortlisted among the top 30 entries nationwide and was considered for representation at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) 2026 in the United States. The research was later published in a SCOPUS-indexed academic journal, a rare achievement for a school student.

    International Recognition with CREST Gold

Mithilesh’s environmental research also received international recognition through a CREST Gold Award from the British Science Association. The CREST Awards program recognizes innovative scientific research conducted by students, with the Gold level reserved for the most advanced independent projects.

The award acknowledged his work on surface energy transfer characteristics across contrasting agro-ecosystems in India, highlighting the depth and originality of his research.

Among the World’s Top 5% in Mathematics

Alongside his scientific work, Mithilesh has also distinguished himself in competitive mathematics. In the 2025–26 American Mathematics Competitions (AMC), he ranked among the top 5% of participants globally.

The AMC is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious mathematics contests for school students worldwide, testing analytical reasoning and creative problem-solving rather than memorization.

    AIME Qualification

His AMC performance qualified him for the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME), a highly selective contest open only to top scorers. Mithilesh achieved a strong score of 10 out of 15, demonstrating advanced mathematical reasoning.

“The Gita teaches you not to be discouraged before you even begin,” he says. “You simply work through the challenge, one problem at a time.”

    Perfect Score in AP Microeconomics

Expanding his academic achievements beyond science and mathematics, Mithilesh also scored a perfect 5 out of 5 in the Advanced Placement (AP) Microeconomics examination, reflecting his strong understanding of economic principles at an international level.

    Leadership Beyond Academics

Beyond academics, Mithilesh has also built a strong record in student leadership. He is a two-time prefect and has served as House Captain of Emerald House at his school. His achievements include the Student of the Year Award, first place in Hindi elocution, and recognition as an Exemplary Human Being.

He has also represented youth voices at national leadership platforms such as the Viksit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue 2025 and the School of Ultimate Leadership (SOUL) Conclave 2025, held at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi.

Ancient Wisdom for a Modern Generation

Whether solving a complex mathematics problem, conducting environmental research or mentoring younger students, Mithilesh believes the core message remains the same—focus on sincere effort rather than outcomes.

By combining scientific curiosity with the philosophical insights of the Bhagavad Gita, he hopes to demonstrate that ancient wisdom and modern ambition can move together toward a values-driven vision of India’s future, echoing the national aspiration of Viksit Bharat 2047.

  • Beyond Compliance: How Surat’s Earth Day Drive Brought India’s BRSR and EPR Frameworks to Life

Beyond Compliance: How Surat’s Earth Day Drive Brought India’s BRSR and EPR Frameworks to Life

Surat (Gujarat) [India], May 6: The transition to a sustainable world requires more than corporate vision; it demands rigid frameworks and collective, on-ground action. On April 29, 2026, EPR compliance leader Nirmal Vasundhara brought this reality to life in Surat. By spearheading a mega beach and riverfront clean-up drive in collaboration with Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages (HCCB), the organization orchestrated a powerful, live demonstration of India’s environmental regulations in action, uniting the four vital pillars of circularity—the Government, Corporates, Citizens, and Compliance Partners.

The Regulatory Engines: BRSR and EPR In India, the shift toward a sustainable economy is driven by two critical mandates. The Business Responsibility and Sustainability Reporting (BRSR) framework is the Government of India’s ESG mandate for the top 1,000 listed corporates, designed to hardwire sustainable, transparent behaviors into corporate DNA. Parallel to this is Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), the statutory rule ensuring producers take physical and financial accountability for the recovery and recycling of their pre and post-consumer waste. The Surat drive was the very essence of these laws materialized into civic action.

Corporations Leading by Example: True sustainability happens when businesses view regulations not as a burden, but as a blueprint for impact. Organizations like HCCB exemplify this commitment. Through their active partnership backing of this mega drive, HCCB demonstrated the hard, on-ground work required to be genuinely sustainable, proving that well-compliant corporates are actively investing in the environmental health of their communities.

The Role of Government and Citizens. No framework can succeed without local enforcement and public participation. With steadfast guidance from the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) and the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC), local governance provided the necessary regulatory backing and infrastructure. Meanwhile, environmentally conscious citizens and frontline Safai Sathis acted as the crucial grassroots engine, proving that source-level waste segregation is the absolute bedrock of a circular economy.

Nirmal Vasundhara: Bridging the Gap. Navigating the complexities of BRSR and EPR requires deep expertise and operational muscle. This is where Nirmal Vasundhara steps in. Beyond facilitating physical circularity, the organization provides the strategic guidance required to align corporate actions with both national mandates and global ESG frameworks. Whether it is on-ground EPR execution, GHG accounting, or preparing for comprehensive global assessments like EcoVadis and CDP, Nirmal Vasundhara bridges the gap between policy and practice. During this event, they ensured complete circularity by channeling 100% of the collected plastic waste directly to their MRF Center for recycling.

From the Director’s Desk: “Environmental compliance requires verifiable, on-ground action. By uniting government, corporates, and citizens, we turn BRSR and EPR frameworks into real impact. Our mission is to ensure every sustainability commitment translates into complete circularity.”— Miklesh Goel, Managing Director

The Bottom Line: Achieving a circular economy cannot be done in silos. When the government establishes frameworks like BRSR and EPR, compliant corporates like HCCB fund the recovery, citizens segregate at the source, and partners like Nirmal Vasundhara provide the vital training and operational infrastructure, a zero-waste future transforms from a regulatory goal into a tangible reality.
