  • When a helpless mother cries, even the sky splits apart: Maatri Devo Bhavah

When a helpless mother cries, even the sky splits apart: Maatri Devo Bhavah

New Delhi [India], November 19: Maatri Devo Bhavah reminds us that the greatest stories often live around us. It forces you to think—sometimes writers don’t need to create fictional worlds. real stories, when crafted into films, not only entertain but compel you to reflect on how far a mother can go for her children’s better future and lost peace. A mother’s limits simply don’t exist.

Bhojpuri cinema’s queen, Amrapali Dubey, herself calls this the best film of her career, and once again she has succeeded in deeply moving her audience. Her film Maatri Devo Bhavah has been released and has even entered its fifth week in several theatres. Directed by Machhindra Chate under the banner of Deoyani Movies, this film arrives as a soothing balm amid ongoing allegations of vulgarity in Bhojpuri cinema. The story is fresh, emotional, and intensely crafted. For its storyline, Maatri Devo Bhavah deserves a solid 4.5 stars.

The film’s treatment is outstanding. To convey the emotional depth of the story, the director raises the film to another level with powerful direction, dialogues, and music. Matchindra Chate, as Vasudev Kaka—the man who stands by the distressed family throughout—is the soul of the film. As the binding force and narrator, he not only carries the graph of the film but also excels as its director. Directing is a technical craft while acting is purely artistic, and Matchindra Chate shines in both.

    Film Trailer Link : https://www.youtube.com/watch?si=j5RENlDj7EnpHVpB&v=KwkS_DqY0Ro&feature=youtu.be

The film beautifully portrays the boundless love between a husband and wife and the sacrifice and devotion of a mother. Amrapali Dubey appears in a completely new avatar. The story revolves around Ganga (Amrapali Dubey) and Gautam (Dr. Mahesh Kumar), who are living a happy life with their children. Slowly, Gautam falls into alcoholism, and the land on which Ganga’s house stands is claimed by a nearby school. A husband lost to addiction and the fear of losing her home slowly crumble Ganga from within. Some objects on the screen become more than props—they become alive. The way the director has captured Ganga’s pain when her drunk husband returns home every night is sensitive and praiseworthy.

Meanwhile, the influential village Thakur, Subedar Singh (Dev Singh), casts a dirty eye on Ganga and attempts to violate her. At that moment, the extraordinary presence of mind shown by Ganga’s young children proves that wisdom is never bound by age. Child actors Aarav Verma, Sayesha Natekar, and Agastya deliver remarkable performances.

Things worsen when Subedar Singh causes an accident involving Ganga’s daughter Pinky. During her treatment, it is revealed that Ganga is suffering from blood cancer. The story then takes several dramatic turns. Subedar Singh doesn’t stop here; he finds Gautam alone one day and brutally murders him. As tragedies pile upon Ganga, she is left to shoulder all responsibilities alone. During the emotional sequences, Sajan Mishra’s background music gives the scenes a soul.

When a helpless mother cries, even the sky tears apart. Amrapali proves yet again why she is one of the finest actresses in the industry. The blend of helplessness and courage on her face will break you from within and make your heart pound. Life becomes even heavier when a woman loses her husband and learns that she herself has only a short time left. If you don’t shed tears by the end of the film, then what can one even say?

The film features many renowned actors from the Bhojpuri industry—Amrapali Dubey, Dr. Mahesh Kumar, Matchindra Chate, Anoop Arora, Manoj Tiger, Prakash Jais, Sanjay Pandey, Dev Singh, Bablu Khan, Hira Yadav, Rinku Arushi, and Sweety Singh Rajput. Dev Singh is exceptionally convincing as Subedar Singh. Sanjay Pandey fits his miserly character so perfectly that he feels real. Manoj Tiger delivers impressive comedy mixed with intense acting. A powerful ensemble cast and top-tier performances elevate the film tremendously. The writer is Sabha Verma, DOP Firoz Khan, editor Gurjant Singh and Pr Strategist are Sanchar shakti.

Film Expert Sarvesh Kashyaph says about film is The core storyline may be new, but films about strong yet helpless women are not. What sets this film apart is how it explores familial relationships and a mother’s boundless ability to do anything for her children. By the end, the emotional graph is so high that you leave the theatre wiping your tears. Overall, the film deserves 4.5 stars.

  • Collector Prithwish Dasgupta Wins Vermeil Award at Bongopex 2025 for Extraordinary Netaji & Azad Hind Collection

Collector Prithwish Dasgupta Wins Vermeil Award at Bongopex 2025 for Extraordinary Netaji & Azad Hind Collection

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], November 19: Celebrated Netaji and Azad Hind collector Prithwish Dasgupta has been awarded the prestigious Vermeil Award at the 10th Philatelic Exhibition Bongopex–2025, organised by the West Bengal Circle of the Department of Posts. The exhibition, held at Science City from 14 to 17 November, brought together philatelists from across West Bengal, Sikkim and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

Dasgupta, known nationally for his unparalleled research on Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and the Indian National Army (INA), impressed jurors with his rare and historically invaluable exhibit. With over twenty-five years of collecting experience, he presented one of the most comprehensive displays of Netaji’s life, INA’s military history and the material culture of Azad Hind.

    Handwritten Netaji Letters Draw Crowds

One of the most striking components of Dasgupta’s award-winning entry was a collection of handwritten letters authored by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose between 1936 and 1939, during his period of British-imposed house arrest. Many of these letters carried the official markings “Censored & Passed by the British Police”, offering a direct glimpse into the surveillance and restrictions placed on Netaji by the colonial administration.

Philatelists, historians and visitors described these letters as “living pieces of India’s freedom struggle,” and they formed an emotional centrepiece of the display.

INA Medals Manufactured in Vienna: A Rare Highlight

A major attraction at Bongopex 2025 was Dasgupta’s extraordinary collection of military decorations issued by the Provisional Government of Azad Hind. These medals were manufactured during World War II by Rudolf Souval, a renowned Vienna-based maker of German military decorations. Therefore each medal bears the embossed mark “RUDOLF SOUVAL” on the reverse.

Dasgupta’s collection includes almost every known variety of INA medals, such as the Sher-e-Hind (Grand Star), the highest military decoration conceived by Azad Hind; the Sardar-e-Jung (1st Class Star), regarded as the second-highest honour; the Vir-e-Hind (Warrior of India); the Shahid-e-Bharat Bronze, often compared to the modern Param Vir Chakra; and the Tamgha-e-Azadi and Tamgha-e-Bahadur, issued in gold, silver and bronze grades. Each of these medals is inscribed with “Indiens Freiheitskampfe”—German for India’s Freedom Struggle.

Collectors described Dasgupta’s display as one of the finest ever presented in India, especially since it included not only the medals but also the original presentation boxes and full sets of wartime ribbons.

Philatelic Rarities: Azad Hind Postal Covers & Jumping Tiger Patch

The Vermeil-winning exhibit also showcased an extensive collection of Azad Hind postal material, including circulated and uncirculated covers, rare tricolour INA stamps depicting soldiers raising the Azad Hind flag, and extremely scarce wartime philatelic items issued in territories influenced by Netaji’s movement.

A highlight for military-history enthusiasts was a hand-embroidered “Freies Indien” Jumping Tiger shoulder patch, once worn by INA officers. The patch is considered one of the rarest artefacts linked to INA uniforms and is seldom seen in the Indian philatelic circuit.

Dasgupta further displayed multiple covers sent to INA families in India from Rangoon, Malaya, Singapore and Burma after Independence, many adorned with hand-drawn portraits of Netaji. Experts remarked that this unique combination of postal history and patriotic art elevated the exhibit to museum-level significance.

Post-Independence Memorabilia & Global Tributes to Netaji

The exhibit extended beyond wartime material and included First Day Covers, Special Covers, commemorative postcards and stamps issued in India after Independence, celebrating Netaji and the INA. Dasgupta also showcased global philatelic releases honouring Bose from countries across Europe and Asia, alongside rare INA currency used in Japanese-occupied Burma.

Complementing the philatelic items was a curated selection of vintage matchboxes featuring Netaji’s image, precious research publications by INA veterans, and badges and tokens issued by Netaji-inspired organisations in the decades following Independence.

Collector Speaks on Preserving Netaji’s Legacy

Speaking after receiving the Vermeil Award, Prithwish Dasgupta said that documenting Netaji’s journey and the INA’s sacrifices remains his life’s mission. “Any item connected with Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose or the INA is precious and worthy of preservation. Collecting and conserving these materials is my way of honouring India’s freedom struggle,” he said.

With the honour at Bongopex 2025, Dasgupta has been widely acknowledged as one of India’s foremost Netaji collectors and among the rare experts preserving the legacy of Azad Hind through authentic archival material. His work continues to contribute to historical research, public exhibitions and a deeper national understanding of one of India’s most inspiring chapters.

By bringing together archaeology, law, economic history, epigraphy and oral tradition, A City Called Agroha consolidates fragmented narratives into a single scholarly text — a characteristic that stands out as one of its most compelling strengths. The book presents the ancient republic not merely as a historical subject but as a sophisticated socio-economic model with contemporary significance for policymakers, researchers and communities exploring India’s indigenous frameworks of governance and commerce.

The launch marked an important moment for Indian scholarship and for the Agrawal community’s cultural heritage. With its extensive research and interdisciplinary approach, A City Called Agroha is poised to serve as a foundational reference for future studies, firmly placing Samrat Agrasen’s legacy within the larger discourse on India’s civilisational evolution.
