  • Festive Season Critical for Small Sellers’ Survival; Regulatory Changes Could Impact Millions of Digital-First Businesses

Festive Season Critical for Small Sellers’ Survival; Regulatory Changes Could Impact Millions of Digital-First Businesses

New Delhi [India], August 21: The India SME Forum today highlighted the critical importance of the upcoming festive season for millions of small sellers across India, emphasizing how any sudden regulatory changes could severely impact their business sustainability. The festive season, which typically accounts for 35-40% of annual sales for small businesses, represents a make-or-break period for numerous MSMEs who have embraced digital commerce through platforms like Amazon, Flipkart, and Meesho. These sellers have invested significantly in inventory and logistics preparation for the seasonal surge. Another factor that  could dampen consumer spending, potentially impacting millions of sellers nationwide who depend on festive sales is uncertainty around GST slab revisions.

    Key Points:

    • Festive season represents 35-40% of annual sales for small sellers
    • Over 2.5 million small businesses now sell online through marketplaces
    • Digital platforms enable 2.5x-3x growth for small town businesses
    • MSMEs have already invested in festive inventory and logistics

“Any immediate regulatory changes during this crucial period could devastate small sellers who have already committed their limited resources to festive inventory,” said Vinod Kumar, President, India SME Forum. “E-commerce platformshave been instrumental in digitizing millions of small businesses, perfectly aligning with the Government’s Digital India vision. We urge regulatory bodies to consider the timing of any new compliance requirements, as they could severely impact seller livelihoods during their most critical business period. It is equally important for the government to follow up on the clarion call and announce the slab so that consumers can celebrate in style.”

The Forum emphasized how digital marketplaces have democratized access to nationwide markets for small sellers, enabling them to compete effectively with larger retailers. This digital transformation has been particularly vital for small town businesses, who now reach customers across India.

A business owner, Lakshya Kwatra, Founder of Luusa, shared: “The festive season represents our most critical sales period of the year. Any regulatory disruption during this period wouldn’t just impact our revenue but jeopardize the livelihoods of hundreds of artisans and small manufacturers in our supply chain who depend on this seasonal surge. The success of Indian brands on the world stage has been made possible through the government’s support for digital transformation and platforms like Amazon.”

Another small seller, Amandeep Budhiraja, owner of JustToyz, echoed: “The festive season contributes nearly half of our annual revenue, and we’ve already invested months of preparation.Digital marketplaces like Amazon have allowed small businesses like mine to reach customers across India. Any sudden regulatory changes now would not only threaten our festive sales but disrupt supply and erodetrust in India’s digital marketplaces, potentially setting back thousands of digital-first businesses by years.

The India SME Forum encourages more small businesses to embrace digital opportunities while requesting regulatory bodies to ensure stable policy environment during critical business periods.

  • Indian Railways To Run 12,000+ Special Trains and offer Discounts to Ease Festive Travel Woes

Indian Railways To Run 12,000+ Special Trains and offer Discounts to Ease Festive Travel Woes

New Delhi [India], August 21: At Patna Junction these days, you can already sense the season coming. Chai vendors are stocking up extra cups, porters are haggling louder than usual, and families keep asking the same anxious question at counters: “Bhaiya, ticket confirm ho jaayega na?” Every year around Diwali and Chhath, the story repeats. Trains overflow, waitlists shoot up, and homecomings turn into headaches.

This time, Indian Railways says it is ready. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, speaking at Rail Bhawan, laid out a plan that mixes festival generosity with future ambition: over 12,000 special trains across India, a 20% discount on return tickets, and a raft of new services that place Bihar firmly in the spotlight while benefitting the rest of the country too.

Indian Railways – A Nationwide Lifeline for Festival Travelers

To understand why this matters, just picture the migrant worker in Surat saving all year to head back to eastern Uttar Pradesh, or the student in Delhi desperate to make it to Darbhanga for Diwali. Over 12,000 special trains will run between October and December. Vaishnaw said, “It is our priority that no passenger faces difficulty in reaching home or returning after the festivities.”

A tall claim, yes, but backed by numbers.

The effort follows discussions with Bihar’s Deputy CM Samrat Chaudhary, Union Minister Lalan Singh, MP Dr. Sanjay Jaiswal, and MP Sanjay Kumar Jha. While Bihar’s concerns were high on the agenda, the scale of the operation is pan-India. Extra services are being planned for Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad, and beyond.

    Indian Railways PNN

    The Rare Return Discount

Here’s the part that raised eyebrows: a flat 20% concession on return journeys. Passengers who travel between October 13 to 26 and come back between November 17 to December 1 will save money on their second ticket. It’s not every day the Railways gives such a direct festive discount. A man waiting at Anand Vihar station put it simply: “बस टिकट मिल जाए, दिवाली बन जाएगी। अगर सस्ती भी मिल जाए तो सोने पे सुहागा।”

For families travelling in groups, that saving could mean an extra mithai box, or gifts for nieces and nephews waiting back home. The gesture feels less like accounting and more like an acknowledgement of the annual bliss.

    New Trains: Speed and Reach

Beyond the festive timetable, four new Amrit Bharat Express trains are being rolled out: Gaya–Delhi, Saharsa–Amritsar, Chhapra–Delhi, and Muzaffarpur–Hyderabad.

They’re not luxury trains, but faster, more affordable options for middle-class passengers. Think of a young man working in Hyderabad who can now reach Muzaffarpur without multiple changes. Then there’s the big one for Bihar: a Vande Bharat Express connecting Purnia to Patna. For years, only big cities flaunted this sleek service.

Now, passengers from smaller towns can feel the same pride. A local trader in Purnia joked, “अब हम भी सेल्फ़ी वंदे भारत के साथ डालेंगे।”

    A Spiritual Journey on Rails

The Railways also leaned into India’s cultural heart. A Buddhist Circuit train will link Vaishali, Hajipur, Sonepur, Patna, Rajgir, Gaya, and Koderma, sites steeped in the life of Lord Buddha.

Pilgrims from Japan, Sri Lanka, and Thailand already visit these towns, but connectivity has been patchy. This train could change that. For local families, it offers an affordable way to rediscover heritage without expensive tour packages.

    Infrastructure: Bihar as a Hub

The announcements didn’t stop at passenger trains. Long-term projects were also highlighted. The Buxar–Lakhisarai section will become a four-line corridor, boosting both freight and passenger capacity. Patna will get a ring railway, potentially easing the daily grind of congestion.

A new rail link will connect Sultanganj and Deoghar, important for religious tourism, while a fresh Patna–Ayodhya train is also planned.

Supporting measures include a washing pit at Laukaha Bazar and several new road overbridges. For once, these aren’t vague promises; they’re tied to approved projects.

    Leaders Thank, Citizens Hope

Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary and other leaders lined up to thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi for clearing these projects. Their words were full of gratitude.

Chai sellers, coolies, and ordinary passengers all agree: more trains, more chances. And that’s enough to stir optimism.

    More Than Numbers

To be fair, 12,000 trains won’t magically erase overcrowding. Long queues and last-minute cancellations may still haunt passengers. But what’s striking is the intent. There’s short-term relief, special trains and discounts, and long-term fixes through infrastructure. Together, it feels like an attempt to treat festival travel not as an afterthought but as an event in itself.

As Diwali diyas light up balconies and Chhath songs echo along the Ganga, millions will step into coaches that didn’t exist last year. Some will complain, some will rejoice, but most will quietly thank the system that managed to get them home. Because in India, festivals are not just about rituals, they’re about the journey back home.

  • Surat Family Offers Waghas to 24 Temples in Dwarka on Janmashtami

Surat Family Offers Waghas to 24 Temples in Dwarka on Janmashtami

Dwarka (Gujarat), Aug 20: A Surat-based family created history in the temple town of Dwarka on Janmashtami by offering Waghas (traditional dresses) not only to Lord Dwarkadhish but also to the deities of 24 temples inside the complex.

The offering was led by Nehal and Tushar Desai. It was described by priests as the first time in recent memory that Waghas for all temples were presented by a single family.

Nehal Desai said he was inspired during a visit earlier this year. “When I first came in February, it felt as though the Lord himself guided me. This Wagha is not ours, it is an offering of love, devotion and gratitude,” he said.

Waghas : Dwarka on Janmashtami PNN

The Waghas were prepared in Surat over a period of nearly four months. More than 28 artisans worked on the project. Real zari, silver and pearls were used. The theme chosen was Hans Padmalila, symbolising creation and purity.

The sanctum sanctorum was also given new decorations. Dashavatar depictions and a golden door were added, temple officials confirmed. The Waghas were transported by road from Surat to Dwarka before the festival.

The presentation on Janmashtami drew large crowds. Devotees described the moment as “tearful and divine.” Priests blew a conch as the idols were dressed. Many pilgrims wept as they watched the ceremony.

An elderly devotee said he had seen Janmashtami in Dwarka for 50 years. “Never before have I seen such an offering. It felt historic,” he said.

Nehal Desai expressed gratitude to priests, including Chaitanyabhai, Deepakbhai, Vijaybhai and Jitendrabhai. He also mentioned support from his wife, Vaishali, children Dhvani and Vishant, and friends Hardik Sorathia, Nimisha Parekh, Gautambhai Kapadia and Monik Ganatra.

Temple priests and local devotees called the offering a “mammoth work of devotion.” They said it had set a new precedent in the holy city.

“This was not only a ritual but a reminder of what seva means,” one priest said.

For the Desai family, the act was personal. For the wider community, it became symbolic.

As the festival concluded, the Waghas shimmered under temple lamps, leaving behind an image many described as unforgettable.

  • Centre for Sight and Milind Soman Urge India to Prioritize Eye Health on World Senior Citizen’s Day

Centre for Sight and Milind Soman Urge India to Prioritize Eye Health on World Senior Citizen’s Day

New Delhi [India], August 21: On World Senior Citizens’ Day, Centre for Sight, India’s leading network of super-speciality eye hospitals, is calling attention to the urgent need for timely intervention in age-related eye diseases. With over 140 million Indians above the age of 60, nearly one in three faces visual impairment, a challenge that threatens both independence and quality of life.

Globally, 80 percent of blindness is considered avoidable. Yet myths and delayed care continue to cost seniors their sight. Cataract, the leading cause of blindness in India, can now be corrected through advanced bladeless, robotic laser surgery performed as a same-day procedure. Glaucoma, often known as the “silent thief of sight,” advances without early symptoms, while diabetic retinopathy and retinal diseases are also on the rise.

To raise awareness, Centre for Sight has partnered with fitness icon Milind Soman, who embodies active ageing and holistic wellness. The campaign reminds families that overall health is incomplete without regular eye check-ups.

“Eye health defines dignity, confidence, and independence in old age,” said Dr. Mahipal S. Sachdev, Chairman & Medical Director, Centre for Sight Group of Eye Hospitals. “No one should accept poor vision as an inevitable part of ageing, because with today’s technology and expertise, they don’t have to.”

Femto-second robotic laser cataract surgery now offers patients greater safety, speed, and precision. Combined with advanced intraocular lenses (IOLs), many seniors are able to regain clear vision and reduce dependence on glasses, enhancing their ability to lead active lives.

Centre for Sight emphasizes that responsibility for elder care extends beyond medicines and nutrition. Regular eye check-ups can prevent blindness and preserve independence. Early signs such as blurred vision, dull colors, halos at night, or difficulty reading should never be ignored.
