  • Gene editing – A tool to tackle climate change and to achieve food security in the Asia Pacific – Dr. Ravi Khetarpal

Dr. Ravi Khetarpal, Executive Secretary, Asia Pacific Association of Agricultural Research Institutions (APAARI)

New Delhi [India], June 17: There are about 688 million people undernourished in the world, of which 351 million – more than half — live in the Asia- Pacific region. Further, there are growing concerns that the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic may have undone whatever gains were achieved towards food security in the region. The agriculture sector is facing the most negative consequences of unpredictable and severe climatic conditions; therefore, we need to have innovative and scientific solutions to ensure higher, diseases-free, and nutrient-rich crop production. Asia Pacific region, which is home to 12 out of 46 Least Developed Countries, achieving food and nutrition security is very critical.

The exponential population growth, increasing conflicts, frequent natural calamities, and now major epidemics are going to compound the complexities of global food security in the near future. And the Asia Pacific will be the worst affected due to small farm landholdings. The average size of landholding is just 1 hectare or lower in the region as against the global average of 5.5 hectares. This region occupies one-fourth of the global landmass but houses more than half of the total world population. The Asia Pacific is expected to drive economic growth over the next decade as the region constitutes 40 percent of the global economy, including rising economic powers such as China, Japan, Australia, and India. While there are some economically stable and rich countries in the region, most countries in the region are either developing or underdeveloped, and primarily are dependent on agriculture.

The Asia Pacific faces the additional problem of low crop productivity and inadequate arable land for agricultural expansions. Thus, increasing food production in highly populated areas requires an innovative approach beyond the conventional methods. Farmers are also restricted by the cost of crop inputs such as fertilizers and pesticides as well as possible re-seeding in case of severe weather changes.  Frequent drought and floods are harbingers to climate change, which makes the smallholder farmer in South Asia most vulnerable than any other part of the world. But I am quite confident that innovative techniques like gene editing will provide reliable, speedily implementable solutions to current agricultural challenges.

Gene editing uses a natural process to make genetic changes that could be achieved by conventional means, though in a more precise and quick manner. The precision in targeting the desired location lets the gene-editing technique stand out among other plant breeding methods. Gene editing could lead to sustainable intensification of agriculture, increase nutritional value, and enhances the resilience of crops to climate change. The Asia Pacific accounts for 60 percent of fertilizer sales. Gene editing also supports plants to efficiently utilize soil nitrogen and thus lower the use of nitrogen-fertilizers. Thus, these factors will not just help poor farmers to save money but enable plants to grow to their highest potential and give the best output.

Meeting our food demands without compromising environmental integrity is a big challenge for our sustainable future. In the Asia Pacific, at least 12 countries have started using gene-editing technology. There has been a positive response from many countries as gene-editing techniques are proving to be quite beneficial.  According to market researches, the current value of the gene-editing industry is USD 80 million, which is expected to surpass 2.1 billion figures by 2026. There seems to be huge scope for gene editing techniques in the Asia Pacific in the coming future, for they can protect farming and rural livelihoods by developing high-yielding and climate-proof crops and that too at comparatively low cost.

There has been positive policy support for gene editing in many countries in the Asia Pacific, though many are regulating them as genetically modified (GM) crops. Both Australia and Japan do not regulate gene-edited crops with no DNA insertion in them. Japan already has allowed the sale of gene-edited ‘super tomatoes, which is seen as a big step for gene-editing technology. The Philippines too is in the process of coming up with science-based reasonable guidelines for gene-edited organisms. Many other nations like Indonesia are already developing improved crops using gene editing. Consumer acceptance surveys done in Japan and Korea indicate that consumers prefer gene-edited products, though there is a need to create greater awareness regarding the technology. The Indian government has come up with detailed draft guidelines for the use of gene-editing technology but these are still pending approval. Therefore, India’s leadership role in the region has been compromised in the absence of a specific regulatory framework for gene editing, even though immense investment has been made by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT)to support research in the field. Today, consumers are seeking safe and healthy food, which is grown without pesticides and has healthier nutritional value. Gene editing stands to fulfil these demands. There is a need for wider public acceptance and supportive government policies if gene-editing technology is to be used for the greater good of mankind.

Baju Dikhao, COVID Hatao / Roll your sleeves

  • HealWell24 looking to bridge gaps in healthcare sector in India with DocsCampus.com

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 17: COVID-19 pandemic revealed the gaps in the existing healthcare structure and showed that the Indian healthcare system is too weak.

With a lower doctor-patient ratio (1:1000), issues in last-mile healthcare delivery, and lack of qualified doctors in rural & semi-urban areas, the Indian HealthCare system needs a revolution.

There is no effective, trusted single window for healthcare delivery to everyone and no proven way for professionals to find, consult, transact with each other online.

Providing a solution to all these issues, JK Singha, Rk Ningthem, Nilesh Bhanushali, and Chittaranjan Mishra started HealWell24.

In Jan 2021, Anil Va Verma, a top executive in a major beauty care startup, joined HealWell24 as Chief Investment Officer.

The idea behind the next chapter of HealWell24 emanates from a deep and personal experience of the team.

It is to solve for the current asymmetry of Indian Healthcare (of information & access), no booking engine (such as HealWell24.com or Practo.com) will ever be sufficient at a scale, which has become obvious to the entire world during the two waves of the Covid-19 pandemic.

It would need a simple engine and a user-managed network of Doctors and Patients, owned and moderated with the community at its center stage.

DocsCampus.com, the upcoming product of HealWell24, plans to solve exactly this in a simple to use and effective platform for the next generation, stated the founder.

The Healthtech startup currently provides an easy-to-use web and mobile platform where members can connect with India’s top doctors – 24/7, 365 days a year.

Speaking about the platform, JK Singha says, “HealWell24, the current product, already empowers individuals with remote screening, where patients can connect with their dedicated doctors anytime, from anywhere, and engage in live video sessions. We also provide additional support, like doctor home visits, home lab tests, or medicine delivery, to our customers- all of which are fulfilled on the same day by our team. But with DocsCampus, we would consider us successful when we have removed the existing asymmetry of access & information for doctors or medical students in rural/ semi-urban areas & their patients.

Although the DocsCampus portal is not expected to be monetized in the coming quarters, till it hits an inflection point, the services of the current booking engine will be deeply integrated to ensure top quality service delivery to all the doctors on the platform and their patients.

The company will be moving into the next phases of DocsCampus lifecycle in the coming three quarters from launch, of which I remain tightlipped but extremely excited about.”

Operational in 35 cities, HealWell24 has 1000+ doctors, 300+ Labs, and 100+ Dentists on its platform. The startup has Apollo Spectra, Indian Oil, Hiranandani Hospital, Mahindra Lifespaces, Synechron technologies, Zeno Health as Corporate Clients, and several well-established companies in diagnostics chains & hospitals as partners.

Till now, HealWell24 has provided essential healthcare service to thousands of Indians for conditions such as bone cancer, dental abscesses, and diabetic retinopathy.

With over 215K consumer transacted so far, HealWell24 currently handles over 600 transactions per day.

HealWell24 has aggressive growth plans and is looking to raise Series A in the next two months. The startup had already raised a total of $1.1Mn from Seed and Its Pre-Series A Rounds.

  • TTK Prestige launches innovative Sleek SS gas stove that is high on aesthetics and low on maintenance

New Delhi [India], June 17: A stylish and well-crafted gas stove can contribute so much to the aesthetics of a kitchen. However, performance and low maintenance are equally important criteria when selecting a gas stove.

If you are in the market for a new gas stove, consider TTK Prestige’s elegant Sleek SS gas stove. Consumers can choose between two variants 3B AND 2B. The thoughtful spill-proof design helps control messy spills, keeping your kitchen cleaner and easy to maintain. The frameless body allows for ample space to reach under and clean after every use.

Focusing on innovation, TTK Prestige has ensured that every part of the Sleek such as the ergonomically designed knobs, the high-efficiency tri-pin brass burners and the durable stainless steel top all contribute significantly to the aesthetics. The brass burners ensure that the food is evenly cooked and that there is efficient usage of LPG. This is particularly important to ensure that the cylinder lasts for longer, thus keeping household expenses in check.  For those home cooks that are looking to speed up the cooking process, the jumbo burner, which is available in the 3B model, will do the trick as the huge flame ensures that the cooking time is reduced. The robust pan supports are specially designed for Indian cooking. The Sleek gas stove is lightweight, which makes it portable and easy to move around.

Over the last 66 years, TTK Prestige has emerged as the go-to kitchen appliances brand for home cooks across the country. In fact, it is estimated that there exists a TTK Prestige product in nearly every kitchen in India. The brand operates on the pillars of trust, safety, and health, which form the basis of every TTK Prestige product. Right from inception, the brand has prioritized addressing the pain points of home-cooks across the country. The Sleek is the perfect example of how TTK Prestige as a brand has upgraded the humble gas stove to offer home cooks a combination of aesthetics and functionality.

The 2B Sleek retails for INR 4795, whilst the 3B version costs INR 5995. Both models are available for purchase at Prestige Xclusive stores and leading retail outlets in West Bengal.
