    Microsoft and the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) have unveiled an overarching partnership that will leverage AI to expedite the adoption of AI by the US federal government in a historic agreement that marks the dawn of a new era in public sector technology. The deal will transform the way federal agencies work, simplify services, and provide tremendous cost savings to the taxpayers, estimated at more than 6 billion dollars after three years and at 3.1 billion dollars within the first year.

    This partnership is not a mere software acquisition; it is a strategic step to place the American government at the center of AI adoption. The core of the agreement is one year of Microsoft 365 Copilot at no extra charge to government workers working under the high-security G5 license. This project is a direct answer to the AI Action Plan of the administration, which focuses on ensuring rapid and safe implementation of modern artificial intelligence to improve all aspects of services to citizens, as well as advanced data analysis.

    The technological infrastructure of the government is a fragmented landscape, too long, with systems that are too different to work together.     Kochi (Kerala) [India], August 8: The STRIDE Inclusive Innovation Summit, held in Kochi on the 4th of August 2025 and organised by the Kerala Development and Innovation Strategic Council (K-DISC), concluded with honours awarded to eight engineering college teams for their outstanding innovations designed to enhance the lives of differently-abled individuals.

    The recognised institutions included Vishwajyothi College of Engineering and Technology in Ernakulam, NSS College of Engineering in Palakkad, College of Engineering in Vadakara, St. Gits College of Engineering in Kottayam, Vidya Academy of Science and Technology in Thrissur, TKM College of Engineering in Kollam and Sahrudaya College of Engineering and Technology in Thrissur. The awards were distributed at the summit’s closing ceremony, which celebrated youth-driven innovation with social impact.

    Inaugurating the event, Social Justice Minister Dr. R. Bindu highlighted the potential of inclusive technology to empower individuals with disabilities and make daily tasks more accessible. She said that many differently-abled persons continue to struggle with basic routines and lauded STRIDE for demonstrating how thoughtful innovation can ease these challenges.

    A major focus of the summit was the presentation of STRIDE’s broader vision, to make Kerala India’s first inclusive innovation state. The initiative seeks to create a compassionate, sustainable economy by addressing the real-world challenges of vulnerable populations, including the elderly, those in palliative care, the financially disadvantaged and especially persons with intellectual disabilities.

    Through a multi-sectoral approach, STRIDE (Social Technology and Research for Design Excellence) is developing a comprehensive ecosystem that encourages social innovation. The model integrates government departments, community organisations, academic institutions, and technology partners to work collaboratively on inclusive solutions. Government departments such as Social Justice, Health, Local Self-Government and Education are actively involved in the mission. Community participation is led by Kudumbashree, with support from NGOs, industries and CSR initiatives.

    On the academic front, engineering and design colleges, polytechnics and psychology departments are being engaged to align student research and projects with real-world social needs. The technology community, particularly IEEE, plays a vital role in mentoring and guiding these innovations.

    Local Self-Government Minister M.B. Rajesh, speaking at the summit, announced the launch of the STRIDE Makerstudios and reaffirmed Kerala’s goal of becoming a national leader in inclusive innovation. He said STRIDE and Kudumbashree are working closely with persons with physical and mental challenges to co-create universally accessible solutions and Kudumbashree has set aside about ₹1 crore this year for establishing Maker Studios.

    Dr. P.V. Unnikrishnan, Member Secretary of K-DISC, noted that the initiative is built on a co-production model where people with disabilities are directly involved in developing technologies that address their needs. Robin Tommy, Executive Director of K-DISC, added that the aim is to simplify lives through Collaboration, co-creation, design and social innovation.

    STRIDE’s approach also incorporates a circular, sustainable economy by encouraging communities to manufacture assistive and adaptive devices. These low-tech innovations, produced using 3D printing and fabrication technologies, will be created in community hubs such as BUDS institutions and NGOs. The devices not only enhance independence and quality of life for users but also offer income-generating opportunities, promoting a social enterprise-driven gig economy within the state.

    A Memorandum of Understanding was signed with DC School of Architecture and Design to support the design and establishment of STRIDE Maker Studios, which was followed by the presentation of the Designathon awards. The speakers at the summit included; Radhamani Pillai, Chairperson of Thrikkakara Municipality, presided over the function.     A:

    For example, CareCanvas is an AI-powered skincare assistant that personalizes and tracks users’ progress on their skin care routines through smart, data-driven insights. Another is Varia, an AI voice agent made for human-like phone conversations in B2B and fintech applications. While still a work in progress, this demonstrates the level of complexity students are encouraged to tackle.

    We also see deep technical work like speech-to-speech translation and gesture-controlled gaming that were built during our AI/ML Build Day. Events like the 48-hour Gahan AI Hackathon lead to rapid prototyping and the opportunity for interdisciplinary teams to collaborate and work on real-world use cases with the pressure of a deadline.

    Student ventures have similar ambitions—ranging from platforms enabling lifelike AI avatars for education and entertainment, to apps that simplify healthcare communication, automate grading, or provide personalized learning content.     What makes this ecosystem unique is the year-long Industry Immersion that every student takes part in. Whether they choose to intern, launch their startup, or dive deep into a research project, they gain real experience solving problems at production scale; working with engineers, writing code that actually runs, and learning the process of taking a product from ideation to deployment.

    Q: Can you talk about students who’ve benefited from this hands-on learning model?
    A:
    Take an example of Sauhard Gupta, selected for Google Summer of Code (GSoC) 2025, which is a globally competitive program with only about 5% acceptance rate and is usually targeted towards students who are in their senior year or pursuing a post-graduate degree. The Android Virtual Printer Application, one of Sauhard’s projects, is now under review by teams working on Chromium.

    But it isn’t just Sauhard that’s outstanding — it’s the ecosystem we have built at SST that prepares students to perform at this level. Open-source mentorship, the guidance for artificial intelligence, along with a culture of peer-led innovation, allows students to take the lead by making work and projects that matter.

    Another recent accomplishment is that four of our students have been chosen to attend the Harvard Project for Asian and International Relations (HPAIR) Conference in Tokyo this year. This global platform is prestigious, highly selective, and provides the opportunity for future leaders to interact with policy-makers, entrepreneurs, and academics from around the world.

    Q: What role do mentors and industry professionals play in this model?
    A:
    Mentorship is a key aspect of SST. It is also a component that all of our students have access to at SST, mentor relationships with industry experts, the very best, from global players that come from companies such as Amazon, Microsoft, Flipkart, and most of which visit our Bangalore Campus to have offline sessions on site. These industry experts direct the students from SST on project architecture, research directions and careers in AI or Robotics.

    We regularly have sessions with “super mentors” like Rajan Anandan (Ex-Microsoft India Head, Ex-Google VP SEA), Bhavin Turakhia (ZETA CEO) and most recently Arvind Neelakantan – one of the founding minds behind GPT-3 and GPT-4, and now a Research Scientist at Google DeepMind. Arvind gave students a rare behind-the-scenes look at real-world AI development. He discussed how AI is transforming engineering, as well as the significance of systems thinking and the need to do things with intention – not just speed. The students were clearly inspired, yet humbled.

    Q: How does your model keep up with how quickly AI evolves?
    A:
    Our curriculum evolves fast. Whenever a new architecture model or groundbreaking paper is released, our instructors—many of whom are active software developer professionals—cover it in the next module. Our AI and ML courses are tightly aligned with real industry needs, from LLMs and prompt engineering to deploying pipelines with TensorFlow, PyTorch, Hugging Face, and Kubernetes. By third year, many students aren’t job hunting—they’re already building products, working in research labs, or running startups.The loop between industry demand and academic design is tight and intentional.
