India & UK Marching Hand-in-Hand with Shared Goals

The two significant aspects which bind the two nations together are that both India and the UK are vibrant democracies and leading economies of the world. Both nations have made impressive advances in human resources, manufacturing, innovation, science& technology, education, research, fintech, space, defence, emerging and green technologies, clean energy, among others. Both hold immense potential to address global challenges pertaining to climate, security, terrorism and pandemics. Under the ‘2030 vision,’ India and the UK intend to forge a partnership that is mutually beneficial for both countries. They aim for revitalised and dynamic connections between their people; re-energised trade, investment and technological collaboration that improves their lives and livelihoods. They are also looking forward to enhancing defence and security cooperation, thereby facilitating a more secure Indian Ocean and Indo-Pacific Region. Primarily, they intend to collaborate in the broad spheres of climate, clean energy and health.

The Upcoming INDIA-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA)

India and the United Kingdom (UK) formally launched negotiations for an ambitious Free Trade Agreement on 13th January ’22 in New Delhi. The nations aim to reach an interim agreement by mid-April and subsequently a comprehensive deal by the end of the year. It is estimated that the FTA could double the bilateral trade to $100 billion by 2030. The Indian Minister of Commerce & Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, and his British counterpart Ms. Anne-Marie Trevelyan jointly launched the talks for the FTA, which is being touted as India’s deepest trade deal to date.

The UK has been actively seeking new trade partners after Brexit and concluded its first trade deal with Australia in December ’21. India is UK’s third-largest exports market for Scotch whisky by volume after France and the US. The UK hopes that India will drastically cut its 150 per cent basic Customs duty on Scotch whisky under the FTA, which would widely open up the market. India seeks to gain from tariff reduction in labour-intensive sectors such as textiles, leather, jewellery, apart from cereals and pharma products.

New Delhi,  March 8: Under the theme “The riddim that connects the world”, the Jamaica Pavilion at the World Expo 2020 Dubai, aims to introduce and position Jamaica as a logistic hub connecting the Americas to the rest of the world. With the island strategically located, providing direct connections to major gateways, this makes the destination even more appealing to tourism investors and stakeholders in the airline industry.

Emirates Airlines is a premium airline from the Middle East region, and Jamaica’s Tourism Minister, Hon Edmund Bartlett has initiated discussions with top representatives of the airline during his visits to the World Expo 2020 Dubai. These discussions aim to enhance connectivity between the regions by facilitating airlift.

In an ongoing effort to enhance the connectivity efforts between Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Europe to Jamaica and the rest of the Caribbean and Latin American region, Minister Bartlett held meetings with His Highness Sheikh Ahmed B in Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive of the Emirates Group.

Other Jamaican dignitaries present at the meeting were, Senator The Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, leading the delegation to World Expo 2020 Dubai; Ambassador Alison Stone Roofe, Under Secretary for Multilateral Affairs; Donovan White, Jamaica’s Director of Tourism and Diane Edwards, President of JAMPRO. Sheikh Majid Al Mualla, Divisional Senior Vice President of International Affairs and Mr. Adnan Kazim, Chief Commercial Officer from Emirates Airlines were also present at the meeting.

Jamaica’s well developed and world-class infrastructure was an essential element of the dialogue as mention was made of the highways, airports and seaports including the existing air and sea connectivity within the region. The island’s meetings incentives conferencing and exhibitions (MICE) facilities which attract tens of thousands of business travellers for conferences, tradeshows and corporate activities are major advantages. Donovan White, Director of Tourism, Jamaica also presented relevant data on the island’s tourism product as he provided details on potential growth in airlift capacity in terms of potential flyers.

Minister Bartlett also briefed the Emirates delegation on the expansion of the Panama Canal and the benefits that Jamaica will gain from new and innovative commercial ventures as it seeks to position itself to join Rotterdam, Dubai, and Singapore as the fourth node in the international logistics chain. Director White gave an update that the Montego Bay Convention Centre is preparing to host the World Free Zone Organization (WFZO) AICE 2022 and is expecting 3,500 delegates from across the globe, with over 70% of that expected from Asia, Africa and Europe. Launched in UAE, the World Free Zone Organization will be hosting its annual AICE 2022 on June 13 – 17 in Jamaica.

Given Jamaica’s geographical location in the centre of the Americas, efforts are being made at an opportune time between Emirates Airlines and Jamaica to be partners to the wider region.

  • Philippines FDA approves first ever generic version of Pfizer anti-Covid pill

Philippines FDA approves first ever generic version of Pfizer anti-Covid pill

Manila (Philippines), January 25: The Philippines Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the world’s first generic version of Pfizer’s anti-Coronavirus pill Paxlovid, just days after the original was granted Emergency Use Authorisation (EUA) by the US FDA.

The Philippines FDA has approved the department of health’s application for a compassionate special permit application for the first generic version of Paxlovid that has been launched by Beximco Pharmaceuticals, a leading generic drugmaker from Bangladesh.

Philippines-based Pharmaceutical company Biocare Lifesciences Inc would be the distributor and importer of a generic drug, which would be sold under the brand name Bexovid in the Philippines.

According to Pfizer, the risk of hospitalisation or death is reduced by 89% when Paxlovid is given within three days of the onset of symptoms and by 88% when given within five days of the onset of symptoms. The treatment, a combination of Nirmatrelvir and Ritonavir tablets, is given together twice a day for five days and is recommended for treatment of mild to moderate cases of Covid-19.

Pfizer data also suggests the drug remains effective against the faster-spreading Omicron variant of the Coronavirus, which is driving the latest surge in Covid-19 cases globally.

“The approval by the Philippines FDA will make Bexovid accessible to Covid-19 patients in the country and add another treatment protocol to the existing drugs. We plan to import 20,000 to 30,000 courses of Bexovid initially and expect the supplies to begin in the first week of February. Bexovid is expected to be priced 50-60% cheaper than the original Pfizer drug, making it an affordable option,” said Dileep Tiwari, Managing Director, Biocare Lifesciences, during an interview with CNN.

Bexovid is recommended as an at-home treatment to help reduce the severity of the infection. The drug has the potential to eliminate many hospitalizations, thus helping reduce the strain on the healthcare infrastructure.

“Bexovid is not meant for patients who are hospitalised. Any patient who is Covid-19 positive can buy the drug from hospitals once supplies begin,” said Mr. Tiwari in a CNN interview.

Separately, Bangladesh’s Directorate General of Drug Administration has also granted EUA for Bexovid to treat mild-to-moderate Covid-19 cases in patients aged 12 and above.
