Vedanya hosts Nigel Green for the India Physical Literacy Conclave

    Read Time:3 Minute, 14 Second

From L to R – Nigel Green, Simrin Bakshi and Nishchint Chawla of Vedanya International School

September 3: Vedanya International School, in association with the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and International Physical Literacy Association (IPLA) organized the India Physical Literacy Conclave on September 2, 2022, at the India Habitat Center, New Delhi. The purpose to host this conclave was to explain the concept of physical literacy via examples of how schools can modify their provision for physical education, physical activity and sports. Nigel Green, who is a co-chair IPLA and a Physical literacy consultant was present through the workshop, sessions and conclave, along with participants from the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth Affairs, Health, Government of India, State Governments, Corporations, Schools, Private sector, NGOs, Sports Authority of India, Sports Academies to name a few. IPLA, UK was a partner in the initiative.

A study reported that nearly six million people die in India annually, due to Non-communicable diseases (NCD). Also, there is the double burden of obesity and malnutrition. Almost 40% Indian population is obese. Malnutrition also impacts on more than 30-35% of children across age groups. Physical activity levels across all age-groups are getting lower. Highlighting the same, Vedanya launched a white paper on the subject of “Physical Literacy: Paradigm Shift towards Active and Healthy India” highlighting the Concept understanding, Potential Implementation Approach and Contextualized Solutions for India.

Nigel Green, a member of advisory board of Vedanya, currently a physical education consultant and co-chair (IPLA), said “Physical literacy benefits not just the body but also the mind. It improves academic performance, cognitive skills, mental health, psychological wellness, social skills and provides a healthy lifestyle. It is thus imperative for children to master fundamental movement skills and develop physical literacy. Talking about the current Physical Literacy scenario in India, only 5 per cent of India’s 1.25 billion population is sports literate, which is merely about 57 lakh people out of 125 crore people who are engaged in sports, directly and indirectly. Other countries like the U.S. and China are way more established with a 20 per cent physical literacy awareness amongst the citizens. It would be beneficial for India if the establishment of a National Physical Literacy Mission (NLPM) gets through successfully. It would result in the formation of a responsibility matrix that includes curriculum design, compliance monitoring, and review, grievance redressal and self-correction mechanisms.”

Having been a Senior Lecturer in Physical Education at Liverpool John Moores University from 2009 – 2018, Nigel feels that everyone’s aim should be to maximize their engagement in physical activity. Individuals should work with themselves, with the children, with colleagues on creating a physically active environment that will allow all to be physically active for the future.

Simrin Bakshi, Chair – Vedanya International School and North India chair for education for ICC, said – “Education in fundamental motor skills, mental and physical health helps in motivating a student and building his confidence and physical competence. Through the physical literacy programme introduced at all levels, we are establishing purposeful physical pursuits as an integral part of the education curriculum. Considering the importance of physical literacy in shaping a more physically active nation, Vedanya saw this initiative as an opportunity for Physical Literacy stakeholders in India to highlight the PL concept and promote a passion for individuals to be physically active for life. We brought together physical literacy and physical education experts for the same reason. We wanted to establish examples of how behavior can be changed within the families, schools and communities for the benefit of all the citizens.”

The lecture was delivered by Ambassador Manjeev Singh Puri, Former Deputy Permanent Representative of India to the UN PMI, Former Ambassador of India to the EU, Belgium, Luxembourg and Nepal, on the topic ‘Strategic Nature of Climate Change Negotiation-A Manifestation of Power Play’.

Prof. Dr. Shashikala Gurpur, Fulbright Scholar, Director, Symbiosis Law School, PuneDean, Faculty of Law, Symbiosis Law School, Pune, Jean Monnet Chair Professor (EUC-LAMP), Co-funded by Erasmusdelivered the welcome address. Dr. Gurpur briefed the audience on the Jean Monnet Distinguished Speaker Program and welcomed and felicitated the Guest Speaker. She mentioned that this was the first fully-fledged Internationalization Activity of SLS-Pune, the Jean Monnet Chair being officiated with this event.

Introducing the Jean Monnet Chair, Dr. Gurpur noted that it was an achievement for SLS – Pune and Symbiosis International University as it is one among the 30 holders of the Jean Monnet Chair across the globe. The main objective of the Chair, or “EU Lamp”according to Dr. Gurpur, is to further dialogue, being a cradle of democracy. Quoting the Socratic Dialogue, Dr. Gurpur visualized the EU as “an epitome of democracy”. She went on to highlight how the Jean Monnet Chair is particularly relevant for the Indian context by showing how India’s emission owing to its carbon footprint, forms a case study to understand and mitigate the risks of climate change. Concluding her address, Dr. Gurpur invited the Guest of Honour to share his valuable insights into active citizenry, democratic participation and civil engagement.

Ambassador Manjeev Singh Puri commenced his address by sharing his past experiences as an Indian Diplomat and Ambassador. He mentioned how the 2004 Kyoto Protocol changed the dynamics of climate change where “the haves felt challenged by the have-nots.” At this juncture, India being a developing country, found itself in the hot waters and was the hegemony of power. According to Mr. Puri, it continues to be an opportunity for India to forge partnerships with the European Union, given the current economic and political challenges faced by the EU. He further emphasized International Law being the process of furthering national interest which is dependent on domestic laws, nature of its adoption and reception of countries”.

Mr. Puri introduced the students to the concept of “Rules-based International Order”, which is privy to the hegemonistic rise of China and the dichotomy of the United States. He went on to note that “International Law is about Hard Power. The countries that have hard power have the most interesting soft power.”

Mr. Puri cited examples of climate negotiations taking a front seat and is now being given the recognition of a magnum that it deserves. In addition to this, he also focused on the emission of Carbon Dioxide becoming an “intergenerational crisis”.

Explaining the genesis of Climate Negotiations, Mr. Puri pointed out that the 1988 Resolution of the United Nations General Assembly set things in motion for IPCC and Rio De Janeiro Protocol and gave rise to the idea of “common but differentiated liability”. He demonstrated with statistics that even after 30 years of emission policies in place, developed countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and European Union have more per capita emissions compared to developing countries like India and China. Yet, fingers were pointed at India on “phasedown of unabated coal”. Concluding his address, Mr. Puri urged the audience to “act on climate change, both adaptation and mitigation”.

The event was concluded by a Q&A session between the attendees and Mr. Puri, and the Vote of Thanks was delivered by Dr. Aparajita Mohanty, Deputy Director (Academics), SLS-P.

  • City boys develop a better, affordable version of bubble tube, apply for a patent

City boys develop a better, affordable version of bubble tube, apply for a patent

    Read Time:2 Minute, 39 Second

Rydham Goyal and Bhavya Agrawal have come up with ControLearn, which is a device that aids in the sensory development of differently-abled children.

August 27: Two students from Ahmedabad have developed a more effective and affordable alternative to the bubble tube, which aids in the sensory development of differently-abled children. The two students have also filed a patent application for the design of their breakthrough product.

A bubble tube is a fascinating product as by simply watching bubbles rise in a tube and feeling the vibrations the air pump produces, children with developmental disorders can improve their visual and tactile senses and also their attention and concentration capabilities.

Rydham Goyal and Bhavya Agrawal, class 12 students at JG International School, have given the name ControLearn SDBT (Sensory Development Bubble Tube) to their customisable and affordable version of the bubble tube. Incidentally, they learnt about the bubble tube by chance during a visit to the Hospital for Mental Health in Ahmedabad, as arranged by Mrs. Hiral Vaidya, where they stumbled upon a faulty one in the dark sensory room.

“We learnt that good bubble tubes are imported and costly, making them unaffordable for most mental institutes. The one in the hospital we visited was priced at Rs. 1 lakh. We realised that its obsolete design doesn’t let users control either the light colour or the speed at which bubbles are produced. Psychologist Dr. Chinmay Desai also told us how being able to control these features would immensely improve the device’s functionality. And so, we decided to put our robotics, design thinking, and entrepreneurial skills for the good of society and started working on developing a better alternative consisting of these improvements, and this is how ControLearn came into being,” said the two youngsters, who have also founded their venture with the name ControLight Assistive Technologies.

Under the guidance of Dr. Priyam Parikh, their mentor in robotics, and Prof. Parth Shah, their mentor in design thinking, the two started building a better version of the bubble tube. They used Medium-Density Fibreboard (MDF) to make a strong and sustainable base. They created a much more affordable alternative by using aquarium pumps with air stones and also managed to pack in features such as controlling the speed of bubbles which is not present in the regular bubble tube. Moreover, it also has the option to modify the source code and include additional features in later versions.

“We are super excited about ControLearn and its potential to usher in a big change in the lives of children with developmental disorders. We are looking for initial funding to make available 100 units of ControLearn to NGOs in Ahmedabad. The next target is to reach 500 units in Gujarat and more than 1,000 across the country. And we don’t want to stop here. We aim to constantly innovate and improve ControLearn to better suit the developmental needs of individuals,” said the duo about ControLearn’s future.

  • Lorien Finance is revolutionising student loans with $75M in loan applications within weeks of launch

Lorien Finance is revolutionising student loans with $75M in loan applications within weeks of launch

    Read Time:4 Minute, 4 Second

August 26: Lorien Finance, an award-winning one-of-its-kind cross-border fintech platform, makes student loans easily accessible and affordable by enabling study-abroad aspirants to get a loan and open a US bank account right from India in just a few clicks. The platform received more than $75 million in loan applications within weeks of its launch.

“Financing hurdles hold back millions of Indian students from considering US education. And the students who do avail loans from Indian banks end up paying high-interest rates and fees, impacting their ability to save money and access credit for other important needs in life,” notes Nikhil Mudgal, Founder and CEO, Lorien Finance. With 14 years of experience in the investment banking and lending industry in the US and European markets, working at global banks including Goldman Sachs, Jefferies, and PNC, Nikhil launched Lorien Finance after identifying the struggles of immigrant students in securing and repaying a student loan for study abroad purposes.

Lorien’s core team brings more than 40 years of experience in the global financial services industry, working as operators, advisors, lenders, risk managers, and entrepreneurs. While Vishal Mundhra, Cofounder and CTO, Lorien Finance, leads product development at Lorien, Gaurav Arya leads India Sales and brings over 14 years of experience in business development, strategy, and operations in the Indian fintech space.

Lorien is disrupting the status quo by combining its US funding relationships and the understanding of Indian culture and financial risks. “Our mission is to make loans cheaper, accessible, and transparent to students by linking US banks with students’ financing needs and privatising the credit risk while solving an important social problem,” says Nikhil.

The annual spending from Indian students studying abroad is expected to reach $100 billion by 2025, and the number of Indian students studying abroad is projected to reach 2 million by 2025. However, affording a US education can be very daunting for an Indian middle-class family. As a result, most students opt for an education loan to fulfill their dreams of studying in a foreign university or college.

Lorien Finance offers education loans to Indian students at interest rates as low as 8.5 percent, so they do not have to carry the burden of high monthly payments. Furthermore, it does not require any collateral and does not impose forex conversion fees, prepayment penalties, or hidden charges. Applicants can skip the piles of paperwork and get their loans sanctioned within three days, thanks to their fast online application process.

“Our strong relationships with US banks and private credit funds allow us to source capital on favourable terms enabling us to offer lower interest rates on student loans to our customers,” adds Nikhil.

Lorien’s underwriting model is progressive. Unlike other lenders who look at current capacity to pay, Lorien looks at future income potential to underwrite and sanction loans. The company analyses local credit history and alternative data sources to find multiple ways to prove creditworthiness.

Headquartered in New York and New Delhi, Lorien Finance stands out from local banks and other lenders in the market because of its exceptional customer support that makes getting a student loan tremendously fast and hassle-free. It also offers rate discounts to encourage and reward timely payments. The company has also eliminated the need for insurance compared to the 1.5 percent requested by most Indian lenders. Students can also start building their US credit history since the loan is made and paid back in USD.

The platform recently received the Global Icon Award 2022 for the ‘Best Cross-Border Fintech Platform’ by the World Association of Small and Medium Enterprises (WASME). After revolutionising the Indian market, the company envisions expanding the same model to other emerging economies like Southeast Asia, South America, and Africa.

The company is backed by prominent investors, including Venture Catalysts, TSM Ventures, Kunal Shah ( CRED ), Aman Gupta & Sameer Mehta ( boAt Lifestyle ), Brijesh Agrawal ( IndiaMart ), Varun Alagh (CEO, Mamaearth ), Arjun Vaidya Dhruv Dhanraj Bahl (COO, BharatPe ), Shiprocket Founders, Classplus founders, Yaser Moustafa (CEO, NBK Capital – Kuwait) and John Werner (Ex-EVP, PNC Bank).

Student loans and US bank accounts are just initial product offerings with big plans for the future. Lorien is not just a student loan company. It has the vision to become a neobank offering a full complement of consumer financial services to our customers as they work and settle down with families in the US. They are establishing a banking and lending relationship with the customers even before they set foot in the US.
