ClassAct 2023 – The Hindustan Times R-Day Quiz: Prelims round witnesses 21,540 participants

    Read Time:3 Minute, 38 Second

Students of grades 1 to 12 took part in ClassAct 2023.

The R-Day quiz saw more participants this year in the Preliminary round than the previous year

New Delhi (India), February 4: Passion for quizzing runs in the DNA of HT School, thanks to the sheer fun that it adds to the learning process of students, while helping them use their wits in finding their way to an answer. So, the first mega quizzing event of HT School was born last year with ClassAct 2022, The Hindustan Times Republic Day Quiz (RDQ), which went on to create a world record. With 19,625 students taking part in the Prelims round, RDQ 2022 was declared by the Asia Book of Records and the India Book of Records as the record holder for ‘Maximum Participation in an Online School Quiz’. This year, ClassAct 2023-The Hindustan Times Republic Day Quiz surpassed the last year’s numbers in the Prelims round, held on 26th January. The Finale of this mega online school quiz, scheduled for 5th February, will be hosted by two of the finest quizmasters of the country, Dr. Navin Jayakumar and Mr. Avinash Mudaliar.

“After last year’s record-setting participation in ClassAct 2022, we were hopeful that the turnout this year will go up by quite a few notches. We are glad that it happened in ClassAct 2023 and would like to thank all the kids who participated and made it a success. We saw 21,540 participants this year as against last year’s number of 19,625. Quizzing has always been a popular mind sport and it’s great to see Gen Z taking to it with such passion. I look forward to seeing them in action again in the National Finals on February 5th,” says Mr. Mudaliar.

The best thing about an online school quiz is that it encourages more kids to participate and cuts across geographical boundaries, connecting students from all over the world. This is exactly what ClassAct, meant for students of grades 1 to 12, has done for two consecutive years. The participants have focussed more on the fun of being part of the learning journey than concentrating on winning in the game of quiz. While the second edition of RDQ saw more than 21,000 participants, the registration number stands at a staggering 40,486.

“I am happy but not at all surprised to find that the participation was so massive. The fact that the kids want to spend their day off from school by participating in the Republic Day Quiz proves that young India is still full of curious minds,” says Dr. Jayakumar.

The Prelims of ClassAct 2023 – The Hindustan Times Republic Day Quiz had an array of fun and brain-tickling questions. The 60 questions that the constants had to attempt included 28 MCQs and 30 type-in options along with 2 more in the format of Arrange in the Right Order. Here is a glimpse of a few of the fun questions that the participants of ClassAct 2023 were challenged with:

Q- Rakesh Sharma became the first Indian in space in 1984. What is the patriotic Hindi title of his upcoming biopic?

    Ans: Saare Jahan Se Accha

Q- Which must-have quality for a quizzer is also the name of one of the Mars rovers?

    Ans: Curiosity

Q- The yellow spotted emerald, a dragonfly specimen, was identified by Andrew Easton in 2018 using what unique medium?

    Ans: Twitter

While the Prelims of ClassAct 2023 was conducted asynchronously, the Finale will be conducted over Zoom and live streamed on HT School’s official YouTube channel. Top 100 scorers from the Prelims will make it to the Finale. All the finalists will stand a chance to win exciting Amazon gift vouchers worth INR 1.25 lakh. The good news is that every contestant will receive participation certificate at the end of this mega quiz. The winners will be selected purely on the basis of their performance, where both speed and accuracy will be taken into consideration. The names of the finalists will be announced shortly. Stay tuned for more updates on the Finale. Happy quizzing!

US-Based Company Supporting Campaign to Uplift Education in India True Curriculum Sponsors National Conference in Delhi

    Read Time:4 Minute, 22 Second

The International Conference on Transforming Education took place at the Indian Habitat Centre in Delhi

New Delhi (India), January 31: True Curriculum, founded by educators to make high-quality, low-cost, one-on-one tutoring accessible to anyone, anywhere, anytime, today announced the launch of its Unicorn app, a peer tutoring platform that effectively trains volunteer tutors and safely connects them with children who need support.

This followed the International Conference on Transforming Education in India, which took place at the Indian Habitat Centre in New Delhi, and was attended by dignitaries from the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), the National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT), and the Department of Education, GNCT of Delhi. The conference sought to discuss solutions and bright ideas to improve the quality of education in India and to implement the National Education Policy of 2020.

The Conference, hosted by True Curriculum and moderated by Dr. Ashok Pandey, featured an eminent panel of national education and e-learning leaders:

The panelists discussed the implementation of this aspect of India’s 2020 National Education Policy:

All viable methods will be explored to support teachers in the mission of attaining universal foundational literacy and numeracy. Studies around the world show one-on-one peer tutoring to be extremely effective for learning not just for the learner, but also for the tutor.”

This discussion came in the wake of the latest Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2022 which notes several critical issues faced by the Indian education system today. While the enrollment of students is at its highest ever in history, with 98.4% of students enrolled in schools, there is an acute shortage of teachers to teach these students – a 47:1 pupil-teacher ratio (PTR) at senior secondary schools as reported by the State of Education Report 2021 by UNESCO.

This has led to a whopping 30.5% increase in students signing up for tuition classes after school, notes the ASER 2022. Despite this, there is a significant dip in the reading and math abilities of students of class 2 to class 5

While the above statistics highlight immense challenges and an urgent need for reform, peer-to-peer tutoring is an immediate and viable solution to address the acute shortage of teachers.  It is a reform measure that all of society can participate in at a grassroots level.

“We were very pleased and proud to support this Conference and to support NEP 2020,” said Ron Seagal, President of True Curriculum.  “Peer tutoring is the most cost-effective, scalable, and immediate means for uplifting education in India and around the world. Not only do students get much-needed one-on-one attention and help, but peer tutors benefit from the humanitarian experience, as well as from the invaluable leadership and career training that will positively impact their college and career paths.  In these and other ways, the tutors gain just as much—if not more—from the experience than the students they serve.  Overseeing the education process, our cherished teachers get a helping hand in the team effort to ensure all students succeed. If we work together to implement NEP 2020, I believe India can help to set a tremendous example for positive education reform.”

The Unicorn app, which facilitates broad implementation of peer tutoring, received wide acceptance from teachers, educators, and school and college administrators as a viable solution to improve the quality of education.

Distinguished guest Ms. Sushma Setia, retired Deputy Director of the Department of Education for GNCT of Delhi, noted the following: “As a teacher and educator with extensive administrative experience in the State Council for Educational Research and Training and in the Department of Education GNCT of Delhi for over 30 years, I believe True Curriculum’s Unicorn App can be the next great step up in educating our youth and an exciting way to achieve effective learning with minimal outlay.”

  • Online schooling is taking adaptability

    Online schooling is taking adaptability

    Read Time:2 Minute, 17 Second

New Delhi (India), January 30:The education sector took a hard hit during the pandemic times and many students had to leave their studies due to the lockdown. But it is aptly said “where there is a will, there is a way” and to overcome this problem, the education sector brought out a new way to impart knowledge to children, and that was online schooling, and digital education, but online schooling still had problems and they were-

    • Less physical activity leads to various health problems and lesser interaction can lead to a socially impaired generation that will find even simple conversations difficult.
    • It becomes easier to procrastinate when children find themselves without any physical guidance. This makes them skip lessons and disregard homework and tests.
    • The Student-Teacher interaction is very limited and distant, thus building a mentor and mentee relationship is very difficult.

Cyboard online school is India’s first online school and it has implemented various methods to ensure that all the cons of online education can be eliminated and a better way could be found. Thus they now have-

    Best of Both Worlds-

The Hybrid learning environment does not deprive the child of physical contact and enables children to interact with other kids as well as with teachers. They can also participate in physical activities like games, yoga, etc. that help in the motor skills development of a child.

There are classes like arts and crafts that help in enhancing a child’s mind-body coordination and develop their cognitive skills. Recently, new subjects have been introduced that include, languages French and Spanish, that not only capture the interest of children but also give them a peek into a diverse culture.

Rajat Singhal, Co-founder and CEO of Cyboard School says, “Our school is well-equipped for any contingency that might prevail in the upcoming times, and to create a better environment for our students we have even evolved the online education system and turned it into a hybrid method that enables students to experience the best of both worlds.”

The co-founder of Skoodos, Mrs. Shruti Verma says, “It is very important for a school to take care of all the aspects of a kid’s development and have a positive impact on the kids, along with a great curriculum that helps children to grow up and be an asset to the country. Seeing schools like Cyboard School assures me that our future is in good hands and we can see a better future where creativity and passion prevail”
