  • Meet Archana Rao, India’s only Female Laughter Yoga Therapist

Meet Archana Rao, India’s only Female Laughter Yoga Therapist

    Read Time:3 Minute, 10 Second

August 16: It is known that Laughter is the best medicine, but are you aware of how laughter can affect your well-being and work environment and improve the quality of work output as an individual or as a group.

A lot of corporate companies have, of late, been looking for ways for the welfare of their staff to reduce stress, increase levels of productivity, and create happier environments. The pandemic has further fueled the need to get people relaxed and be in their state of wellness.

In this quest, we came across Archana Rao, India’s best-known female laughter yoga expert, coach & therapist. She manages her organization, Laughter Yoga India, after getting trained under the able smiles of Dr. Madan Kataria, the proponent of Laughter therapy worldwide.  She is a leading Women Entrepreneur who spearheads these sessions for Corporates and Social organizations in the Indian subcontinent.

In conversation with Archana, we asked her to explain a bit more about Laughter yoga and how the process work.

She started her reply with a ”Ho Ho Ha Ha Ha”, the signature salutation and then told us about her passion & love for creating this ‘unique entrepreneurial model of laughter yoga’ for corporate and social transformation. She uses various tools and techniques like games, music, & dance that blend her experiences with the joy of laughter. The entire Laughter yoga session delivers a holistic approach of laughter therapy, meditation and relaxation sessions to create value and effectiveness.

When asked what kind of yoga is in laughter, she mentioned, “There is a lot of breathing involved to exercise the lungs, clapping to exercise the palms, laughing to exercise the face and moving around to spread laughter, thereby exercising the whole body. And this is why the therapy is called laughter yoga.” Medically it has been proven that laughter releases endorphins which instantly improve the body’s metabolism and feel-good factor, thereby complementing the work behaviours and outputs.

Further to understanding the process’s challenges, she mentioned, “Making people laugh without jokes and comedy is not easy. People are conditioned that way.”

She further said, “Every group I deliver the session is unique in its own aspect depending on the audience profiles, background, content and the right context.” The initial resistance in the first few minutes of the session is overcome through the unique methodology followed and the participation exercises. She says that these same people complete the sessions with a happy, peaceful, jovial mindset of laughter that makes the programs effective and makes my day.

Archana has worked with many large companies, some repeatedly, and the results have been astonishing. Reviews and testimonials are on her website

We went on to ask her about the other work she does and found her passionately say that, “I also work for social causes wherein I do events with young children at schools, colleges and universities, with the LGBT community, with cancer patients and survivors, with elderly people needing support etc. All of this for social causes and no fees, just out of the passion to support communities to experience the joy of laughter”. She mentioned her life mission is to “keep creating magic and miracles, always be in gratitude, Look for inspiration within and Never give up”. She ended the conversation by emphasizing her motto –

“Live – Like there’s no tomorrow” and “Love – One and all.”

  • Turning disability into his ability, get to know India’s first specially-abled standup comedian!

Turning disability into his ability, get to know India’s first specially-abled standup comedian!

    Read Time:3 Minute, 13 Second

    August 15:

    1. What is that one flame of fury inside of you that never gives up no matter what?

Answer 1 )  Well, I don’t think I have such flames of fury within me, but a ‘Keeda’ surely exists inside me. The curious ‘Keeda’ of doing something different or doing something different. Thanks to this risk-taking Keeda, I tend to take flying arrows every now & then, which brings me both great and fatal consequences. But importantly, I happily accept both the results. And yes! that Keeda surely helps keeps me going, going ahead.

    1. What made you pursue this field of work regardless of its risks?

Answer 2) Well, if you look it that way, I think every field carries its risks. But to make anyone laugh, it is is difficult and priceless. You never know what kind of a hard time a person is going through. And so, when You make that person smile with your craft, skills and wit; you get their blessings as a reward, and that is the thing I am willing to take a risk for

    1. How do you get back up after falling into the shackles of disability? How do you stay inspired?

Answer 3 ) Initially, it was a bit difficult, but I started looking on the positive side later. I don’t need to worry about cutting those toenails, or I have to worry about getting my footwear stolen outside the temple because who would want a single shoe, right?

Humour, in every case, works for me & keeps me inspired, and after all, it’s all about one’s perception.

    1. Do you crave challenges and opportunities and will go to great lengths to accomplish them?

Answer 4) Mostly, I crave Pizza & avoid challenges, but Yes! An Opportunity is something I constantly look out for. They say an opportunity never knocks twice, So I ensure to keep my door open, always for new opportunities

    1. What do you think has been your greatest support system?

Answer 5) My Family and my Friends. From my parents to my sister and dear wife, I owe it a big time to them. I am quite fragile in many ways, and they have supported me is unbelievable. Apart from my family, I am what I am today because of my friends. If they weren’t around, I would probably be more successful.

Haha! Doing what I do the best. Kidding.

    1. What made you grow out of the pains and the challenge and explore a whole new different career avenue?

Answer 6) I think God has gifted me with the skill of making people laugh. That comes naturally to me. Touch wood for sure. And sometimes, I think God has allocated me a duty to entertain people. The other important reason is that, honestly, I am too lazy to do other jobs. I think I Write, and I Speak. That does it for me. Most of the time, I can do it all while lying on a couch, so yes, why not?

    1. Do you think the audience is ready for a Lil change in the world of standup comedians?

Answer 7)  I think the audience is always ready if a change comes with better quality. Stand Up comedy as an art form has always been around us, but I think nowadays, we are heading to the golden era of this art form & I am more than willing to contribute in whatever capacity I can. And with the crowd open to changes and uniqueness, don’t you think it’s time for a little change in the industry?

  • Chakradhar, an unsung hero helping distressed tenant farmers in Telangana

Chakradhar, an unsung hero helping distressed tenant farmers in Telangana

    Read Time:5 Minute, 32 Second

August 13: Tea-vendor-turned-entrepreneur Gadhagoni Chakradhar Goud doesn’t find happiness in stashing cash bundles in the safe or seeing his bank accounts swelling. For him, pleasure comes from his hard-earned money wiping the tears of a bereaved tenant farmer’s family. Or in preventing a farmer from abruptly ending life and making him a fellow entrepreneur.

Chakradhar, whose life is a perfect live example of the ‘Rags to Riches’ idiom, spends half of his income on helping poor tenant farmers. Having been supporting the farmers in different ways since a young age, he founded Farmers First Foundation in 2020 to extend the help in an organized manner.

He succeeded in preventing many farmers from committing suicide by extending support to shape their future. For instance, when he knew from his volunteer about a farmer in Tirupati attempting suicide, Chakradhar arrived there and extended Rs 2 lakh help to enable him to buy an autorickshaw. Now, the farmer-turned-auto-owner is leading a happy life with his family, taking care of 8 women of three generations dependent on him.

Another distressed farmer rescued from suicide by Chakradhar in Hyderabad has married his daughter to a police sub-inspector.

    Who is Chakradhar Goud?

Now 35, Chakradhar Goud was born in a poor family in the Siddipet district of Telangana. His father was a van driver. With it becoming difficult for the five-member family to survive on his meagre income, the family ran a small tea stall in Siddipet. Like his elder brother and younger sister, Chakradhar used to go to school and work at the tea stall during his free time.

In 2005, he moved to Hyderabad in search of a job, even before completing his graduation. He worked as a clothes vendor in the streets and as a helper in the company of a disposable cup before joining as a loans executive at a leading private bank.

During this period, he did his graduation and LLB through a correspondence course and learned computers. It was because of the helping hand extended by his friends who settled abroad; that he became an entrepreneur by establishing a small company to execute software projects. “There was no looking back. I entered real estate also simultaneously, and this CLIX SENSE group took birth. Now, there are 50-55 staff in my enterprises”, he reveals.

Though he didn’t have any agriculture background, his passion for working for the betterment of the farm community kept increasing by the day. Friends convinced him to go in an organized way to help farmers. He registered Farmers First Foundation in 2020. He and his wife are directors, and they don’t accept contributions. “When people approach us seeking to join our mission, we guide them to help the farmers directly”, he said.

A three-pronged approach to help tenant farmers

In the last three years, Chakradhar helped 300 agricultural families distressed by the unnatural exit of their breadwinners from the world. Through his volunteers in the villages across Telangana, he would ascertain the reasons for the farmer’s suicide and decide on the kind of help to be extended to the family. From his experience, Goud realized that moral support and advice are secondary for families under pressure from the financiers.

“They can think of tomorrow only when they are out of the stress today”, he believes.

“A vast majority of the nearly 8000 farmers suicides reported since the formation of Telangana state in June 2014 are tenant farmers. They borrow for cultivation, and if the crop fails, they are under tremendous stress of loss on one side and the pressure to clear the debts on the other. This gives birth to suicidal tendencies”, he analyses.

Apart from 300 bereaved tenant farmer’s families, the Foundation has extended help to about 100 tenant farmers to diversify their daughters’ weddings. “Mere mangalsutra and toe rings will not help perform a wedding. There are many things, many requirements. That’s why I extend financial support, rather than forcing the family to perform the wedding with the material we give,” Goud explains.

During the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, he supplied 2.5 lakh meals, at the rate of 2,000 a day, to the people in need.

On a Mission to rationalize the RytuBandhu scheme

Chakradhar Goud is now trying to convince the Telangana government to put a ceiling on the landholding for eligibility for a benefit under the RytuBandhu scheme. Having conducted surveys and collected data, he stresses that farmers holding more than 5 acres of land should be excluded from the scheme. “A farmer who owns more than five acres of cultivable land should ideally have the capacity to cultivate on his own. Most such farmers prefer to lease out their lands to tenant farmers than dedicate their time to cultivation. Thus, extending the RytuBandhu scheme benefits to such landholders is injurious to the exchequer “, he says.

According to the estimates prepared by Chakradhar, about Rs 6000-7000 crore would be saved every year if the big landholding farmers were excluded from the scheme.

The money saved thus should be spent on further support to the genuine cultivators. He bats for rationalizing the farm budget (allocation to the farm sector in the budget).

Chakradhar also insists that, like the budget for defence, there should be a separate budget for the kisaan community. “Jai Jawan – Jai Kisaan’ is our slogan; hence we should have equal respect for the two organs in our budget”, he argues.

Chakradhar is now gearing up for a legal battle against the indiscriminate implementation of the RytuBandhu scheme in Telangana. He is gathering public support before raising public interest litigation. “The fight will go on till the goal to exclude rich farmers from the scheme is achieved”, he stated.

Will quit the business if I join politics: Chakradhar

Chakradhar is not averse to politics. “I will enter politics only if I am convinced that my presence would help the farmers and the farm sector. When politics become my career, I will cease to be a businessman”, he declares. Chakradharstrongly believes that politicians should not have businesses and businessmen should not enter politics because the objectives are contradictory. • We can end hunger and starvation together by our unbridled acts of kindness, says PARIS KESWANI

We can end hunger and starvation together by our unbridled acts of kindness, says PARIS KESWANI

    Read Time:3 Minute, 4 Second

August 13: Why the world must care now?

“Poverty Our Collective Shame in the Age of Abundance” By PARIS KESWANI, Ambassador of Goodwill, Humanitarian Emeritus.

Each time I peruse the pages of such esteemed online finance publications as BLOOMBERG, FORBES, LONDON FINANCIAL TIMES AND WALL STREET JOURNAL, I always run into a magnanimous outline of how many billionaires were added to the runaway computational matrix used to keep the data by these organizations. However, I hardly see the data on the number of newly made homeless, hapless, and impoverished BY the INHUMANE POLICIES and laws in the localities where the said billionaires were counted. As a humble student of history and one with a natural love for the origin of words and other phenomena that may remain inexplicable if we didn’t forage through those dark tunnels of the past ages, I decided to look up the origin of the word poor.

From the Webster’s English Dictionary, poor (adj.) c. 1200, “lacking money or resources, destitute of wealth; needy, indigent;” also “small, scanty,” also voluntarily and deliberately, “devoid of possessions in conformity with Christian virtues,” from Old French povre “poor, wretched, dispossessed; inadequate; weak, thin” (Modern French pauvre), from Latin pauper “poor, not wealthy,” from pre-Latin *pau-paros “producing little; getting little,” a compound from the roots of paucus “little” (from PIE root *pau- (1) “few, little”) and parare “to produce, bring forth” from PIE root *pere- (1) “to produce, procure”.

As can be gleaned from the preceding excerpts, the word poor is simply synthetic and introduced at a time when the world had immersed itself into multitudes of resolvable conflicts and, in so doing, created an unfortunate population of war victims made destitute by our refusal to yield and find common grounds for conflict resolution. Should our stubbornness and refusal to compromise become the downfall of our natural sense of generosity?

The most common undeniable factor found in every race, gender, creed, and class is our unhinged access to oxygen which we must breathe to stay alive. I kindly and humbly remind us all that for each iota of breath you take, millions of nostrils receive the same ounce of air but in empty stomachs. With all the trillions of dollars created through the ingenuity of people and the commands of national governments, we should appeal to our innate spirit of generosity and share the excess we have accumulated with those who do not have it.

I kindly leave you with this anecdote of a very wealthy Man, whose name we respectfully conceal, who held an exclusive interview with a famous journalist. The wealthy man spent many hours talking about his possessions, especially his 1100-room mansion, which he was proud of. At the end of the interview, the journalist summoned courage and asked the wealthy Man how many rooms he was going to sleep in that night, bearing in mind that he had 1100 rooms in his mansion.
