Another world record attempt in Surat: World’s largest mosaic image of 200 sq mt made using 18,400 sanitary pads

Kamakhya India’s awareness event for menstrual hygiene and promoting biodegradable products

Surat (Gujarat) [India], June 3: Kamakhya India, an organisation committed to health awareness, attempted to create a world record in Sure. The organisation made the world’s largest mosaic image using 18,400 sanitary pads. The initiative aims to create awareness about menstrual hygiene and promote the use of biodegradable and eco-friendly products.

Titled “Shades of Red 2.0”, the event was organised at VR Surat on June 1 and 2. Kamakhya India’s Founder Nandini Sultaniya highlighted the organisation’s commitment to promoting menstrual hygiene and awareness among women in both rural and urban areas.

“This two-day event aims to spread greater awareness about menstruation. We used 18,400 biodegradable and eco-friendly sanitary pads to create a mosaic image measuring 52×40 sq ft or nearly 200 sq. This is the largest mosaic image made using sanitary pads and represents the Kamakhya India logo,” she said.

The event, aligned with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals listed by the United Nations, coincided with the Menstrual Hygiene Day, organised on May 28, and the World Environment Day, observed on June 5. It emphasised both menstrual hygiene and environmental conservation.

“Our goal is to dispel the various myths associated with menstruation, the taboo associated with periods, and promote menstrual hygiene among women. The pads used to create the mosaic will be distributed by various non-profit organisations in tribal and rural areas, where awareness about menstrual hygiene remains low,” added Ms. Sultaniya.

The event was celebrated as an awareness campaign and a festival to encourage broader participation. It featured various activities and workshops by NGOs and other organisations. The event also contributed to environmental awareness and showed how even small steps can lead to a big impact.

During the event, Ms. Sultaniya and Anjana Patodia delivered inspirational talks on the use of sanitary pads, menstrual hygiene and biodegradable products. A question and answer session was also organised, which was moderated by Kamakhya India Director Arusha Relan and Aarti Gangwal.

Whether Fire Safety And Evacuation Solutions are a Luxury or Necessity

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India] May 31: In the wake of the tragic fire incidents at a Baby Care Centre in Delhi’s Vivek Vihar and Rajkot TRP Gaming Zone, the entire nation is seeking answers about their safety. It serves as a lesson for everyone to reconsider their view of luxury. Despite the Indian real estate market being valued at around 477 billion U.S. dollars in 2022 and estimated to reach one trillion dollars by 2030, the surge in demand draws immediate attention to citizen safety during hazardous events such as fires.

The Rajkot incident claimed the lives of 28 people, while in the Delhi fire incident, seven newborns lost their lives. The Gujarat Government has initiated an intensive fire inspection and discovered that over 90 high-rise buildings in Keshod City in the Junagadh district do not have the mandatory no-objections certificates (NOCs.

Similarly many State Authorities have issued guidelines to take proactive measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents. The BMC’s Mumbai fire brigade wing began an inspection of city malls starting, May 26. As part of this initiative, gaming zones inside these malls were also thoroughly checked. A total of 55 malls have been inspected so far, with 13 of them being served notices for not complying with fire safety norms, as per the fire department report.

The fire brigade officials have emphasized the importance of complying with section 3 (1) of the Maharashtra Fire Prevention & Life Safety Measures Act, 2006. This section mandates every owner or occupier to provide fire prevention and life safety measures in their building or a part of it.

The Fire Department, BMC, and Energy Department have been issuing stricter guidelines due to the increasing demand for properties in the state. With the growing height of buildings, the Energy Department of Maharashtra has issued an advisory to install Fire Evacuation Lifts in buildings having a height of 70 meters or above for Faster and Safer Evacuation.

Dr. Deepak Monga, a Fire Safety and Evacuation Expert, asked Whether licensed or not, whether they had cylinders near the baby area, whether they had a fire system with no entry & exit and how they had a license till 2024.

In Mumbai, the earlier guidelines of the Bombay Lift Rules, 1958 are still being followed. The government must introduce new rules and guidelines that align with today’s infrastructure development to prevent such accidents. Clear specifications about fire safety and evacuation solutions are necessary to avoid fraudulent cases. Dr. Deepak Monga also emphasized the need for evacuation lifts or frameworks in smaller buildings, not just taller ones.

Earlier the Lift Inspector of Maharashtra shared that the old rules of 1958 are outdated and do not cover the technological aspects. A life of the lift cannot be decided on old rules. The revised new rules will have recommended adherence to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) norms.

There are a total of 899 private hospitals and nursing homes registered under the Maharashtra Nursing Home Registration Act 1949 that fall under the jurisdiction of the PMC. Mumbai experienced the second-highest number of property registrations with 11,500 units for April in over 12 years, according to an analysis by Knight Frank.

  • Renowned Indian Lawyer And Scholar Rishabh Gandhi Explores Ethical and Legal Dimensions of Samadhimaran at Prestigious International Conference.

Renowned Indian Lawyer And Scholar Rishabh Gandhi Explores Ethical and Legal Dimensions of Samadhimaran at Prestigious International Conference.

New Delhi [India], May 27: The Fourteenth International Conference on Religion & Spirituality in Society, held at the esteemed Institute of Religious Studies, Universidad Complutense Madrid, welcomed scholars, researchers, and practitioners from around the globe to explore the intricate relationship between religion and society. Among the distinguished speakers was Rishabh Gandhi, a prominent legal scholar, who delivered a compelling oral presentation, titled “Ethical Legal Dimensions Of Religious Death Practice Of Samadhimaran In Jainism And Hinduism.”

The conference, established in 2011, is part of the Religion in Society Research Network, which delves into the evolving nature of spirituality and its impact on society. This year’s event, taking place from May 23 to May 24, 2024, provided a platform for thought-provoking discussions and groundbreaking research.

Gandhi’s presentation focused on the ancient practices of Samadhimaran in Jainism and Prayopavesa in Hinduism, both of which involve voluntary, peaceful fasting unto death. His exploration of these practices touched on ethical, legal, and bioethical considerations, sparking deep interest and debate among attendees.

Jainism and Hinduism: Ancient Practices of Fasting Unto Death

Hinduism, the world’s third-largest religion, is centered on the belief in Karma and the pursuit of Moksha—liberation from the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. Devotees seek ultimate spiritual freedom and unity with the divine through various paths, including devotion, knowledge, and disciplined practices. Jainism, an ancient Indian religion, emphasizes extreme ahimsa (non-violence), anekantavada (non-absolutism), and aparigraha (asceticism) as the paths to Moksha.

A central focus of Gandhi’s presentation was the Jain practice of Sallekhana-Santhara-Samadhimaran, an ancient tradition of deep meditation and fasting unto death. Originating from Jain Aagamas, this practice involves a voluntary, gradual reduction of food and liquid intake, undertaken with a peaceful, detached mindset. Typically observed by elderly or terminally ill individuals, the aim of Sallekhana is to achieve death with equanimity. Remarkably, it is estimated that one person in India undertakes this practice every day.

    Legal and Ethical Controversies

Gandhi highlighted the legal controversies surrounding these practices. In India, the Rajasthan High Court banned the practice of Sallekhana in 2015, deeming it punishable by imprisonment as an attempt to suicide. This decision prompted significant protests from the Jain community, leading to an appeal in the Supreme Court of India. The Supreme Court granted an interim stay on the High Court’s judgment, with the final decision still pending.

The Hindu practice of Prayopavesa, while less common today, also involves voluntary, gradual abstention from food and drink, performed with a peaceful, spiritual mindset. This practice is undertaken by individuals who feel their life purpose is complete and seek Moksha. Gandhi shared poignant case studies, including that of Acharya Vidyasagar, who attained Samadhi Maran in February 2024 at the age of 77 after a decade-long gradual reduction of food intake.

Case Studies: Personal Journeys of Samadhimaran and Prayopavesa

One notable case discussed was that of Robert Hansen, a California native who converted to Hinduism and adopted the name Shivay Subramaniyaswamy. Diagnosed with advanced, metastasized intestinal cancer in 2001, Hansen undertook Prayopavesa, ultimately achieving Samadhimaran after 32 days of fasting. Such stories underscore the profound spiritual commitment and ethical considerations involved in these practices.

Right to Die: Balancing Rights and Regulations

Gandhi’s presentation also examined the broader implications of the right to die as a component of the right to life, privacy, religion, and bioethical prerogatives. He emphasized the need for balanced regulations that respect religious freedoms while safeguarding individual rights and public health.

The presentation concluded with a call for further dialogue and research into the ethical and legal dimensions of religious death practices. Gandhi stressed the importance of understanding these practices within their cultural and spiritual contexts while addressing contemporary legal and ethical challenges.

    Conference Highlights and Future Directions

The Fourteenth International Conference on Religion & Spirituality in Society provided a dynamic forum for exploring the multifaceted relationships between religion, spirituality, and society. Attendees praised Gandhi’s presentation for its depth, rigor, and sensitivity in addressing complex issues.

Looking ahead, the Religion in Society Research Network aims to continue fostering scholarly dialogue and collaboration on pressing issues at the intersection of religion and society. The insights gained from this conference will contribute to ongoing efforts to navigate the ethical and legal landscapes of religious practices worldwide.

In summary, Rishabh Gandhi’s exploration of the ethical and legal dimensions of Samadhimaran and Prayopavesa provided a significant contribution to the conference, highlighting the need for nuanced understanding and thoughtful regulation of these profound spiritual practices.

The finding shows particular significance for the country’s growing IT sector, a key driver of economic growth and social welfare. With technology progress and changing job needs, the sector experiences notable workforce changes. Recent data from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology reveals substantial job growth, with 4.45 lakh new employees in FY22 and 2.9 lakh in 2023.

As engaged workers are key to success, being focused, action-ready and purpose-driven. They also build strong bonds with leaders, peers, and clients, ensuring clear goals, trust and exceptional service. Their dedication and passion propel both organizational advancement and customer or client loyalty, fostering business expansion.

Engagement is not a characteristic of employees, but rather an experience created by organizations, managers and team members. Thus, reassessing HR strategies is crucial, as some practices hinder both employee and company progress. Traditional HR methods such as unclear job roles leave employees struggling to meet expectations. Insufficient development initiatives, amid evolving tech, hinder innovation and competitiveness. Rigid hiring practices, along with low salary raises, appraisals, and inflexibility at the workplace, demotivate employees and risk losing top talents in the fast-paced IT industry.

How to improve HR practices in IT companies?

    • Strategic Hiring: Effective IT recruitment is pivotal for companies and employees alike. Engaging diverse talents like freelancers and part-timers, alongside hiring fresh faces, boosts teamwork, meeting deadlines, and elevating productivity for all involved.
    • Embracing Upskilling : Offering training, online courses, and certifications keeps employees updated. Promoting skill-sharing among team members boosts confidence, productivity, and adaptability, benefiting individuals and the company’s productivity goals.
    • Transparent Communication: Regularly communicate company goals, career paths, and performance criteria with the team. Remain open to feedback related to long work shifts, mental health, stress and promptly address employee issues.

Flexible Working and Engaging Activities – Offering flexible working hours and hybrid options like remote or in-office work boosts employee morale and productivity. And incorporating engaging activities in-office supports mental well-being and fosters a collaborative culture, strengthening relationships between employers and employees.
