Kuala Lumpur [Malaysia], May 3: In a significant industry milestone, Dato Halim Othman’s [1] Aerotree Defence has formalized a contract arrangement with the Ministry of Defence Malaysia for the lease of four Sikorsky UH60A Blackhawk helicopters. The formalized agreement comes pursuant to the announcement made earlier in 2023 by General Tan Sri Zamrose Mohd Zain and subsequent letters of award issued on April 17, 2023, and January 29, 2024, [2] with the official signing ceremony at the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2023.

According to Lockheed Martin, the Blackhawk helicopters provide a multirole transport with enhanced digital avionics, heavy lift capabilities, search and rescue operational use, medevac use role, and a helicopter for special operations. [3] The UK Defense Journal further depicts a global adoption of the modified Sikorsky with over 4000 Blackhawks in active roles globally. [4]

When asked for comment, Dato Halim Othman said, “The agreement with Aerotree witnesses the departure from traditional procurement models, streamlining access to high-value assets for Malaysia’s Armed Forces.” The helicopters are scheduled for deployment at Tim Nukleus Rejimen 882 PUTD Air Base, Kuantan, Pahang and will enhance operational capabilities, with stringent performance targets set for minimum annual flying hours.[5] 

Upon further query of Aerotree’s track record and current project portfolio, the management team present, Dato Halim Othman and Previous Federal Territory Minister and Previous Ambassador of Malaysia to the United States of America Tan Sri Zulhasnan Rafique (PSM) [6], commented about their newest venture, Pahang International Aviation Park.[7]

Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], April 25: A thriving innovation ecosystem and India’s rise in the Global Innovation Index in the past decade are the result of concerted and collective efforts by the governments and industry stakeholders, says renowned Intellectual Property (IP) lawyer, Nakul Sharedalal.

Dr Sharedalal has been heading the IPR Committee of leading industry body Assocham’s Gujarat Council since 2015. Over these years, he has played a pivotal role in cultivating a culture of innovation and IP awareness in India through extensive engagements including talks, lectures, and collaborations with educational institutions, industry bodies, MSMEs, and SMEs. 

In 2013, India ranked 82nd on the Global Innovation Index. However, it has risen to the 40th spot in 2024.

“This is a big achievement. The nation witnessed a significant leap in innovation landscape after the NDA government came to power in 2014. Collective efforts of government and industry in the form of the introduction of new policies, automation of systems, increased digital adoption, greater awareness, an increased focus on intellectual property rights (IPR), and support for researchers and innovators, have contributed to building a thriving and supportive ecosystem and collectively propelled India’s innovation index,” Dr Sharedalal said, sharing his thoughts on the occasion of World Intellectual Property (IP) Day on April 26.

The World IP Day, celebrated annually on April 26 since the year 2000, commemorates the contributions made by inventors and creators around the world and serves as a reminder of the importance of intellectual property in driving innovation and creativity. This year’s theme, “Sustainable Development Goals: Building our common future with innovation and creativity”, underscores the crucial role of IP in advancing sustainable development efforts.

As the world confronts multifaceted challenges ranging from environmental degradation to social inequality, the need for innovative solutions has never been more pressing. World IP Day 2024 presents an opportunity to explore how intellectual property can catalyse the innovative and creative solutions essential for achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

She has been practising for 20 years and has achieved remarkable feats in the practice of Jala Yoga, mastering 45 water asanas and setting records like an unprecedented 8-hour nonstop Jalayoga session. Her dedication to popularizing Jala Yoga extends to global platforms, including events like KumbhaMela 2022, showcasing her commitment to preserving and promoting this unique discipline.

Reflecting on her journey, Dr. Rani shared, “Yoga, ever since its origin, has been evolving continuously and has reached across the globe. Yoga means ‘to unite’—to create a union between the mind, body, and spirit, as well as between the individual and the universe.”

Her passion for Jala Yoga was ignited over a decade ago when she accepted a challenge posed by her mother: to perform yoga on water. Despite the initial difficulties and numerous near-drowning experiences, Dr. Rani persevered, ultimately mastering the art through self-discipline and determination.

“Yoga on water is a combination of yoga, meditation, pranayama, and swimming,” Dr. Rani explained. “Performing various asanas on water requires focus, determination, and a strong gut to maintain balance. It took me over 5-6 years to master, but the rejuvenating experience it offers makes it all worthwhile.”

Recognizing the transformative power of yoga, especially on water, Dr. Rani has been steadfast in her mission to educate and inspire others. While she refrains from directly teaching due to the time-intensive nature of the practice, she eagerly imparts knowledge through lectures and workshops, spreading awareness about the benefits of Jala Yoga.

New Delhi (India), April 25: On April 25, 2015, a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal, centering in the Gorkha district, just northwest of the capital, Kathmandu. The disaster claimed nearly 9,000 lives, injured tens of thousands, and left entire villages and communities in ruins. The destruction was so extensive that it displaced millions and necessitated a massive international aid response.

In the years following the earthquake, the affected communities have demonstrated incredible resilience and determination in restoring their lives and homes. This recovery was significantly supported by various national and international collaborations, prominently featuring the Gorkha Housing Reconstruction Project (GHRP). Funded by the Government of India and executed with the expertise of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), this initiative has been pivotal in aiding families in Gorkha to rebuild stronger, more resilient homes.

Understanding the Cause of the Disaster

The 2015 Nepal earthquake, also known as the Gorkha earthquake, was primarily caused by the thrust faulting on or near the main frontal thrust of the Himalayas, an area known for seismic activity. This region’s geological instability is due to the northward movement of the Indian Plate against the Eurasian Plate, which accumulates stress over centuries, releasing it in catastrophic earthquakes. The tragic event of 2015 was a stark reminder of the area’s vulnerability and the need for improved construction practices and disaster preparedness.

Gorkha Housing Reconstruction Project: A Beacon of Hope

The Gorkha Housing Reconstruction Project began officially on March 8, 2018, after the Government of India partnered with UNDP to provide socio-technical facilitation to over 26,000 homeowners across Gorkha district. The project spans across two urban and six rural municipalities, focusing on rebuilding efforts in 42 wards. The aid provided includes administrative assistance, on-site technical advice, and capacity building for homeowners and local masons.

Technical support encompasses guidance on construction technology, disaster-resistant features, and government norms, along with helping in design, drawing, and the building permit process. Additionally, the project promotes the use of Appropriate Disaster Resistant Technologies to enhance the long-term sustainability and safety of the homes.

Achievements and Impact

Since its inception, the GHRP has made substantial progress. Over 24,000 households have successfully constructed resilient homes with the project’s assistance. This includes designing code-compliant houses, acquiring necessary permits, and facilitating access to housing grants and resources. The initiative has been particularly focused on inclusivity, ensuring that over 2,500 vulnerable households receive the support needed to build safe homes.

Furthermore, the project has trained approximately 2,000 masons in resilient and affordable construction techniques, contributing significantly to local capacity building. The establishment of Building Permit Studios has provided over 3,000 homeowners with essential services, and the deployment of mobile technology vans has demonstrated earthquake-safe construction practices across the district.

Social mobilization efforts have been extensive, with cultural programs and over 310 radio broadcasts designed to educate and engage the community in reconstruction efforts. A striking example of local involvement is the deployment of Awas Nirman Saathis—local masons trained to support reconstruction—who, alongside engineers and social mobilizers, made over 244,000 door-to-door visits.

Spotlight on STS Global

A critical contributor to the project’s success has been STS Global, part of the Owner-Driven Reconstruction Collaborative. STS Global has played a key role in the technical facilitation and capacity building of the community, ensuring that the reconstruction efforts not only rebuild homes but also enhance resilience against future disasters.
