  • Gurwant Singh Ladhi’s Journey; Being A Jiu-Jitsu World Champion To Promoting The Sport In India

Gurwant Singh Ladhi’s Journey; Being A Jiu-Jitsu World Champion To Promoting The Sport In India

    Read Time:3 Minute, 18 Second

June 13: India has a great tradition for sports and keeping aside Cricket, our athletes have been making a mark in various other sports as well. Some of these sports were little known or popular before our athletes raised the tricolor high at global platforms. Neeraj Chopra is now a household name and, after bagging a Gold at Tokyo Olympics, has motivated the new generation to take up Javelin throw as a sport.

Meet Gurwant Singh Ladhi. He has been earning laurels for our country in a combat sport called Jiu Jitsu (BJJ). Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) has gained massive popularity globally and incorporates elements of wrestling, grappling, and ground fighting.

Gurwant, an American citizen of Indian origin, takes pride in representing India at world championships and winning medals for his motherland. He was born and brought up in Batala, Punjab, before migrating to the States. From basking in the glow of his medals at world Jiu-Jitsu championships to training every day, Gurwant is one of the few Indians representing the nation at international Jiu-Jitsu championships.

In 2019, he bagged 3 gold medals at SJJIF (Sport Jiu Jitsu International Federation) World Jiu-Jitsu Championship and became the world champion. In 2021, he bagged 7 medals across various divisions at the IBJJF championships. Both IBJJF and SJJIF are considered to be the mecca of competitive Jiu-Jitsu across the Globe, and Gurwant is one of the few Indians, vigorously participating and winning medals in the internationally acclaimed events.

With decades of practice and experience in diverse martial arts and combat sports, the gold medallist found his calling in Jiu-Jitsu. Since then, he has been zealously participating in a wide range of state-level, national-level, and international-level competitions and bagging medals in various divisions. However, the journey hasn’t been an easy one. Back in 2017, while he was on a trip to India and was training people for free, a few trolls targeted him and called him a fake master. Unscrupulous allegations were levelled against him. This incident etched on his heart yet motivated him to work harder. He proved everyone wrong by winning medals at world-class championships and becoming the world champion which only a few Indians have achieved, if not none.

“My biggest key to success in Jiu-Jitsu is consistent practice and enthusiasm. I want to inspire the world to take up Jiu-Jitsu. Soon, I am planning to open a professional gym for those who want to be the next rising Jiu-Jitsu global champions,” shares Gurwant, who presently holds a purple belt with two stripes. Currently, he trains under Professor Felipe Pena (BJJ Black Belt).

Gurwant doesn’t miss an opportunity to visit India. During his visits, he conducts free training camps and hosts various Tournaments. His BJJ tournaments are acclaimed to be the best India has ever witnessed. The next one is in November 2022.

Gurwant Singh Ladhi believes age is just a number. He will be touching 50 years of age this month yet believes in hustling each day on the mats. He hits the gym first thing in the morning before heading to work. He is married and has 3 kids, 2 daughters and 1 son. His wife and family are his biggest support and pillar of strength in his martial arts journey.

He is a god-fearing soul who is always eager to help the poor. As a socially responsible martial artist and a human being, he helps many families and old age homes in Punjab in whatever means he can.

Our country needs more champions like Gurwant Singh Ladhi, who, despite being in the US, are so close to his Indian roots and takes pride in winning laurels for India.

    Read Time:1 Minute, 35 Second

Surat (Gujarat) [India], June 9: SRK Knowledge Foundation (SRKKF), the community welfare initiative of Shree Ramkrishna Exports Pvt Ltd. (SRK)- a globally trusted and India’s leading diamond crafting and exports company, organized a mega tree plantation drive near Ubharat on 5th June, World Environment Day. It is commendable to note that the drive was towards the plantation of 1 lakh trees on 300 acres of land in the vicinity of Ubharat, near Navsari of Surat, Gujarat. The activity was initiated to create a green zone in one of the popular tourist destinations of Surat.

This mega event was organised on Monday at nine o’clock in the morning, wherein about five thousand families of the SRK group planted trees together. Buses were arranged from Dharukawala College Ground, Kapodra and SRK Sports Complex of Katargam in the early morning of Monday to carry the families to the tree plantation spot.

The mega tree plantation drive, which is in line with the company’s environmental policies, saw extensive participation from the personnel of SRK along with the management present to support the initiative. It was probably the first time that a tree plantation program of such a large scale was organised by the personnel of the same company at the same time. A noteworthy fact is that a monument on Shreemad Bhagavad Gita, named “Geeta Vatika”, is being planned to be set up in an area where tree plantation was carried out. Geeta Vatika is proposed to be Knowledge Center and the Influential body to enable The Bhagwat Geeta to be in practical application in the 21st Century.

Moreover, the event was not just about tree plantations but also about their maintenance. Having planted a tree each, all families pledged to care for and nurture it during its lifetime.

In this way, the SRK group resolves to continue contributing toward reducing pollution and protecting the environment.

Viral Desai undertook the plantation at Sarthana Nature Park in Surat through his philanthropic arm Hearts At Work Foundation, in the special presence of Surat’s deputy municipal commissioner NV Upadhyay. The plantation was undertaken as a part of the urban forest taking shape in an adjacent place.

It is noteworthy that as a part of his environmental campaign “Satyagraha Against Pollution”, Viral Desai has undertaken plantation of more than 8,000 trees in Sarthana Nature Park to date.

“With its extensive green area and dense plantation, the Sarthana Nature Park plays the role of lungs for Surat city. We plan to undertake the plantation of more trees in some patches within the nature park to further increase trees’ green cover and density. This will support the local biodiversity and ensure the nature park becomes the oxygen park for people in the true sense,” says Greenman about the initiative.

Dr. Rajesh Patel of Sarthana Nature Park and Heena Patel were also present on the occasion of the tree plantation. The Hearts At Work Foundation has decided to establish a theme-based urban forest in Sarthana Nature Park. The urban forest will be similar to the ones Viral Desai has helped develop at the Udhna railway station in Surat, the country’s first urban forest within a railway station.

  • CFTI joins hands with the Soi Foundation to distribute bicycles to underprivileged female students

CFTI joins hands with the Soi Foundation to distribute bicycles to underprivileged female students

    Read Time:2 Minute, 31 Second

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 6: CFTI, an NGO with deep grassroot networks, has launched a drive to distribute nearly 1,00,000 bicycles to underprivileged girl students located across several villages in Maharashtra. Having already distributed 13,000 bicycles, they aim to keep bringing the number up and reach as many girls as possible. The campaign’s objective is to make long-distance travel for them easier since they have to walk several miles, often under challenging conditions.

Stepping in to help them is the Soi Foundation, managed by Taruna and Abhay Soi, who are going above and beyond to contribute to the cause and make it a rousing success.

Many of the girls in villages come from underprivileged backgrounds and are daughters of fishermen, construction workers, restaurant help etc. Due to financial constraints, the students cannot spend money on transportation services and are forced to drop out. Additionally, walking long distances in these villages comes with its fair share of problems and girls have to put their safety at risk every day. There are several potential hazards, from animal attacks to harsh weather conditions to crossing difficult terrain.

Recognising their plight, the Soi Foundation is passionately driving this campaign forward by becoming champions for the cause and donating a significant amount of bicycles.

Happy to be a part of the initiative, Abhay & Taruna Soi said, “A cause like this is close to our hearts, and to see so many girls struggling to receive proper education makes us feel disheartened. Something like this will go a long way in ensuring that every young girl, regardless of her socioeconomic background, can continue their education and not be forced to drop out due to uncontrollable circumstances. We are happy to do our part!”

Speaking of the campaign, Chitralekha Patil, Chairperson, CFTI Trust, said, “Working for the empowerment of girls, especially those from underprivileged backgrounds, is a strong driving force in my life. This initiative is important because I believe education is every girl child’s right, and any help we can provide to keep their dreams alive is paramount and feeds into our larger purpose of contributing to social upliftment at a grassroots level. I am also overjoyed that the Soi Foundation is playing a huge role in this and helping us reach our goal.”

Centre For Transformation India (CTFI) is a grassroots level non-governmental organization founded in 2009 that works towards bringing growth opportunities to rural India through education, healthcare, poverty alleviation, women empowerment, and other sustainable development goals.

With a strong network of 700+ grassroots-level volunteers connected to the soil working towards transforming rural India by building opportunities and sources for the villagers to lead a better life, CTFI has undertaken numerous initiatives for the upliftment of villages in Maharashtra.

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 6: Shipyaari and Smart Commute Foundation, under their initiative Cycle Chala City Bacha, held a mega cycling event on the occasion of World Bicycle Day on June 3, 2022. The 22 KM ride was jointly flagged off by Nayan Ratandhayara, the CEO and Co-founder of Shipyaari and Firoza Suresh, the Director of SCF, at 6 AM from Shipyaari HQ at Malad and concluded at Bandra Reclamation.

The bicycle rally was greeted by hundreds of bystanders and fellow cyclists on the way. Close to 200 Cyclists converged at the iconic “I love Mumbai” installation near Bandra-Worli Sealink. The event concluded with felicitations of Bicycle Councillors and Marshals who collectively work towards combating climatic changes for a better future for our younger generation.

Reports have warned about the perils of global warming, and cycling has proved to be one of the most cost-effective means to counter this hazard and contribute to sustainable development. Thus, on World Bicycle Day, Shipyaari and SCF joined hands to invite the Cyclist community for a momentous ride across all 24 wards. The ride’s objective was to emphasize a safe cycling infrastructure and achieve more significant health equity. The event focused on drawing attention to the benefits of using a bicycle as an equitable, cost-effective, and sustainable means of transport.

Being the logistics partner for this mega event and a responsible supporter of sustainable goals, Shipyaari humbly sponsored cycling T-shirts, medals, trophies and healthy refreshments for the participants. Apart from managing the pre-event logistics pertaining to the T-shirt movement across the length and breadth of Mumbai, Shipyaari also extended its support by renting bicycles for the participants who had the enthusiasm to participate but didn’t have the bicycles.

Flagging off the ride, Nayan said, “I used to ride my bicycle to my school in Junagadh, but all was lost as we entered this fast-track life in Mumbai. But I have tried to revive my love for cycling again. I always believe that creating a safe biking culture in Mumbai and across India is critical to our march towards affordable and zero-emissions mobility. The celebration ride like these will help expand biking across Mumbai and, in turn, help our city do the hard work of crafting a shared and just future for the residents of our nation and our planet.”

On occasion, Firoza Suresh, the founder of Smart Commute Foundation and popularly known as ‘the first Bicycle Mayor’, said, “Mumbai is a linear city and has the potential to become the cycling capital of India (by 2030) as bicycles are the future, and global cycling literacy is ever-increasing. Above all, it is a great platform to bring together the citizens of Mumbai bonded by a love for cycling and a will to contribute to the betterment of the city they belong to. The time has come for the people of Mumbai to actively participate in shaping the city. By bringing cycling into our everyday commute, we are making a strong statement on what we envision the streets of Mumbai to become – open, safe, people-friendly and green. The idea is to celebrate World Bicycle Day not just on June 3, but every day and unite the cycling community with support from like-minded organizations like Shipyaari.”

Leading the ride, Vishal Totla, the COO and Co-founder of Shipyaari, said, “With the rise in global warming, we need to look for greener alternatives continuously. As an organization, we have always encouraged green practices internally and externally. I live a very green life – My home in Aurangabad has a solar plant, and as a family, we often participate in events like planting trees etc. On the business front, we are extensively working on plans to support usage of EVs in logistical movement.”

Welcoming participants at the destination, Rahul Karwa, Mentor and Growth Catalyst at Shipyaari, revealed the plans for creating initiatives to adopt sustainable practices within the organization. “We are trying to create an incentive system for our employees to use sustainable practices like cycling for commuting to work and minimizing paper usage in our office. Sponsoring this event is our way to announce our green vision symbolically.”

Shipyaari is a Mumbai headquartered SaaS-based logistics aggregation platform. The tech platform helps reduce the paper consumption in logistical operations substantially, and as an organization, Shipyaari operates with immense mindfulness when it comes to sustainability.

Cycle Chala City Bacha, an initiative of the Smart Commute Foundation (SCF), focuses on an active citizen movement promoting non-motorised transport, health and fitness, with a vision to make Mumbai the cycling capital of India.

  • Shikhar Dhawan Foundation joins hands with the Cuddles Foundation to Help Children Fight Cancer with Proper Nutrition

Shikhar Dhawan Foundation joins hands with the Cuddles Foundation to Help Children Fight Cancer with Proper Nutrition

    Read Time:4 Minute, 1 Second

Mumbai (India), June 2: This Friday marks the end of month long campaign by Shikhar Dhawan Foundation in association with the The Cuddles Foundation to help beat the cancer in children with proper nutrition. Children who are malnourished cannot tolerate chemotherapy and also the treatment puts them at risk of infections. Those malnourished are at higher risks, thus increasing mortality. Chemotherapy in malnourished children reacts different and can be toxic. This is the challenge that Shikhar Dhawan Foundation & Cuddles Foundation, both nonprofit, seeks to address.

In a country where 50,000 children are diagnosed with cancer every year, several challenges stand in the way of being cured. At present, Cuddles Foundation’s Food Heals programme bridges the nutrition gap in children with cancer in 35 government and charity hospitals in 20 cities across India. Through this campaign, The Shikhar Dhawan Foundation aims to beat the cancer disease among children with access to the path to better recovery and good health. In future as well, The Shikhar Dhawan Foundation will equip the partnering organizations and children who are cancer patients with all possible supplies of medication and food supplies.

Dr. Kanika Dewan, Director-Impact and Strategy, Shikhar Dhawan Foundation says, “that the Foundation is working relentlessly to fulfill basic requirements of education & health supplies for underprivileged children, and I believe that such good initiatives can actually bring about a change in people’s lives and society.  Improving care for children with proper healthy food will prevent thousands of needless deaths in future. A child needs to have proper nutrition and a healthy diet to fight cancer. Moreover, they must be physically strong to endure the pain of radiation and chemotherapy. Unfortunately, about 40 percent of Indian children diagnosed with cancer are malnourished. Moreover, malnourished children are at a greater risk of infections, side effects, complications and treatment delays. We have partnered with the Cuddle foundation & hosted a food heals program with them, where we got a chance to spend some time with cancer survivors and got to know about them and their stories. The campaign was all about beating childhood cancer and we were overwhelmed with this collaboration, as eating well gives you the best feeling for good health and recovery.”

Mr. Amitesh Shah, CEO, Da-One Group, says, “Campaign with The Cuddles foundation was a great success and I would like to congratulate the entire team for the same, we as an organization extended support to parents and children suffering from the disease by providing them with hot meals, dietary supplements, eggs, bananas and a monthly ration for them. We are looking forward to more such projects with Cuddles Foundation in future as well.

Research shows that when children fighting cancer are nourished, their survival rate can go up to 70%. At Cuddles, we want to make sure that every child fighting cancer in India has a chance at a cure. We do this through our nutrition program that is currently active in 35 government and charity cancer hospitals but to make sure that our program reaches more children, we need voices like Shikhar Dhawan’s & support from Shikhar Dhawan Foundation to bring in more support and awareness for the program. We can’t thank him enough for putting our mission out there. Food heals but it needs all of us to take it to children who need it the most!,” says Purnota Dutta Bahl, Founder & CEO, Cuddles Foundation.
