AHAR Leads the Way for Mumbai’s Hotel and Restaurant Industry

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], January 22: The Association of Hotels and Restaurants (AHAR) continues to champion the cause of the hospitality sector by addressing critical issues and ensuring growth and sustainability in the industry. Under the leadership of Sudhakar Shetty, AHAR has been actively working on its four principal pillars: Protection, Employment, Growth, and Service.

    Vision for the Industry
Sudhakar Shetty, President of AHAR, emphasized the association’s vision to create a significant impact on the entire hotel and restaurant community. “AHAR works tirelessly to resolve issues with various government agencies, including the BMC and MCGM, on policies such as amalgamation, fire licenses, illuminated signboards, hawkers, illegal food trucks, and monsoon sheds,” he stated.

Highlighting the bureaucratic hurdles, Shetty advocated for a single-window clearance system to reduce compliance paperwork. “Mumbai is the only city with a dual licensing system—BMC Health licenses and FSSAI. We have proposed a unified licensing system to ease the financial burden on hoteliers.”

    Collaboration with MITRA
AHAR has also joined hands with the MITRA project, a government initiative led by CEO Praveen Pardesi and controlled by the Prime Minister’s Office. This collaboration brings together stakeholders and authorities with the support of the World Bank. The initiative aims to position Mumbai as a top tourism destination in India, which Shetty believes will significantly benefit the hospitality industry by driving job creation and boosting tax revenue.

    Resolving Member Issues
Vijay Shetty, Secretary of AHAR, detailed the association’s efforts to mediate disputes and support its members. “We act as mediators between trade merchant associations and AHAR members to resolve cases amicably. Over 200 cases have been resolved, ensuring smooth operations for hoteliers.” AHAR also assists its members in navigating challenges related to excise and government licenses, easing the burden of regulatory complexities.

Strengthening Relations with Police and Authorities
Satish Shetty, Vice President of Zone 10, highlighted AHAR’s role in fostering strong relationships with law enforcement. “We address issues between police and our members by providing legal guidance and mediating disputes. Our WhatsApp groups keep all members informed, ensuring problems are resolved at the grassroots level.”

AHAR also works closely with traffic police to alleviate parking and traffic concerns near hotels and restaurants. “We support traffic regulations to ensure smooth operations while protecting our guests from harassment,” he added.

A Unified Voice for the Industry
AHAR continues to advocate for the hospitality sector’s inclusion in policymaking, stressing the importance of consulting industry stakeholders for practical and beneficial solutions. • Social Emotional Learning at Cambridge School Noida: A Holistic Approach to Student Development

Social Emotional Learning at Cambridge School Noida: A Holistic Approach to Student Development

New Delhi [India], January 22: In today’s ever-evolving world, the classroom is where students are often first exposed to people from different backgrounds, beliefs, and abilities. These differences can create both challenges and opportunities for personal growth. To help children navigate this diversity and succeed, Social Emotional Learning (SEL) classes provide a structured approach to developing essential life skills. At the Cambridge Schools, we have integrated SEL as a core part of our curriculum to foster self-awareness, empathy, and resilience among our students, preparing them not only for academic success but for life beyond school.

    What is SEL?

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is a methodology designed to help students of all ages develop healthy identities, achieve personal and collective goals, better comprehend their emotions, and make responsible decisions. At Cambridge Schools, SEL plays an essential role in fostering the holistic development of our students. This approach enables children to grow emotionally, socially, and academically, providing them with a balanced framework to navigate life’s challenges.

We follow the CASEL framework for SEL, which focuses on five core competencies that guide student development:

    • Self-awareness – Recognizing emotions and understanding how they influence behavior.
    • Self-management – Controlling emotions and actions while working toward personal goals.
    • Social awareness – Understanding and empathizing with people from diverse backgrounds.
    • Relationship skills – Building and maintaining healthy, respectful relationships.
    • Responsible decision-making – Making ethical and thoughtful choices that consider everyone’s well-being.

    Creative and Engaging Learning Methods

To keep our SEL classes diverse and engaging, we use a range of creative mediums such as role-playing, storytelling, film discussions, art projects, group activities, and reflective discussions. Storybooks are used to explore characters’ emotions, motivations, and behaviours, helping children gain insights into their own feelings. For example, after reading a book about a character overcoming a challenge, students engage in discussions that allow them to relate the story to their own lives. Short films about children facing similar issues provide opportunities for empathy and offer potential creative solutions for the students’ personal conflicts.

Additionally, decision-making games place students in hypothetical situations that challenge them to make responsible choices. These activities promote critical thinking and help students understand the consequences of their actions. Art and craft activities also offer a non-judgmental space for self-expression, where children can explore their emotions through creative means.

SEL classes cover themes such as teamwork, collaboration, stress management, problem-solving, anger management, empathy, effective communication, positive self-talk, goal setting, and conflict resolution, among others.

    A Space for Safe Expression

SEL classes are primarily led by counselors, who facilitate discussions, guide activities, and offer one-on-one support when needed. The counselor’s role is key to creating a supportive environment where students feel safe to express themselves. This open setting allows children to address their emotions and receive guidance in a structured, yet relaxed manner.

    Secondary Benefits of SEL Classes

One of the additional benefits of SEL classes is that they give students a platform to express their thoughts and concerns in a group setting, which helps identify issues early before they escalate. These classes give children the opportunity to discuss their aspirations, struggles, and hopes with their peers, fostering a sense of belonging and understanding.

For quieter students, who may not typically engage in regular class discussions, SEL classes offer an ideal environment for them to participate. The group dynamic and the supportive atmosphere encourage them to speak up, making them feel heard and valued.

A Comprehensive Approach to Student Well-being

Overall, SEL classes at Cambridge Schools tie closely with our values of service to others, global outlook, and rational thinking. It is an essential part of our school’s commitment to nurture well-rounded global citizens and foster a community of caring, emotionally intelligent individuals.

Jyoti Joshi, Officiating Principal, Cambridge School, Noida, says As essential as academics, SEL teaches children to understand their emotions, empathise with others, and build meaningful relationships. In today’s fast-paced world, it equips young minds with the confidence and resilience to deal with a variety of situations that they may be confronted with”.

Dr. Faruk Patel Calls Upon IIT Bombay Students To Focus On Innovation In Solar Energy

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], January 22:  KP Group Chairman and Managing Director, Dr. Faruk G Patel, has described achieving the 500 GW renewable energy capacity target of Government of India by 2030 as an extraordinary but achievable challenge.

Dr. Patel made the comment during his keynote address at SUSTAIN 5.0, held at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT Bombay). Organised on the theme — Rethink the Choices, React to the Changes, Rebuild the Future — the event brought together academia, industry leaders and sustainability advocates to discuss crucial environmental issues and the role of renewable energy.

“Today, India has already achieved over 200 GW of renewable energy capacity, with solar energy contributing a remarkable 94 GW. Solar energy is not just part of the solution, it is at the heart of it. To meet the goal of 500 GW by 2030, we will need to install approximately 60 GW of renewable energy every year for the next five years. It is an extraordinary but achievable challenge,” Dr. Patel said.

Dr. Patel outlined India’s ambitious commitments to renewable energy, including meeting at least half of the energy requirements through renewable sources, reducing carbon emissions by 100 crore tonnes, and achieving net zero by 2070.

Highlighting the critical hurdles in scaling solar energy, particularly land availability, he said, “Land availability is a genuine constraint for large-scale solar installations. Around 4 acres of land is needed for 1 MW of solar capacity. We have already used 3.84 lakh acres for 96 GW solar projects.  With our target of 500 GW, we are looking at over 12 lakh acres more. Where will this come from? The answer lies in innovation.”

Dr. Patel called on the students of IIT Bombay to lead the charge in advancing solar technology, urging them to focus on research to enhance the efficiency of photovoltaic cells, increase the lifespan of solar panels beyond 25 years, innovate in battery technologies for improved energy storage, explore alternatives like floating and vertical solar installations and integrate artificial intelligence to optimise solar energy systems.

“You have the intelligence, creativity and resources to push the boundaries of what is possible,” he said and pledged all kind of support required by either students or for IIT Bombay’s innovative sustainability projects and also invited them to visit KP Group’s renewable energy parks in Gujarat.

The event witnessed other thought-provoking sessions, including a presentation on Avoid, Shift, and Improve framework by Dr. KVK Rao, Deputy Director of IIT Bombay, and insights on sustainable public transport by Ramamoorthy Sankaranarayanan, Secretary, Fee Regulatory Authority, Government of Maharashtra.

The event also featured the launch of a recycled paper newsletter and an innovative Carbon Footprint Calculator, symbolising the spirit of innovation and environmental responsibility. The dignitaries lit solar-powered diyas, symbolising hope for a greener future, to mark the commencement of SUSTAIN 5.0.
