  • Personalization Comes to Yoga: 2 Giants – Dr Sajeev Nair and Mohan ji to form alliance: Vieroots Join Hands with the Himalayan School of Traditional Yoga

Sajeev Nair, CMD Vieroots Wellness Solutions & Devi Mohan, Director of HSTY

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], May 11: Heath and wellness world is excited about the new prospects this alliance of Vieroots and Himalayan school of Traditional Yoga will open up. Personalized wellness became the buzzword only in modern medical research. But India knew it all along, with its ancient systems like Ayurveda and Yoga giving great stress to personalization.

Ayurveda’s Vata, Pitta & Kapha, and its numerous combinations are mankind’s first and still one of the most successful attempts at personalization. While Yoga too is based on these principles, too much of its Westernization makes it seem as though anyone can do any asana for the same therapeutic need.

There are only very few Yoga Schools that differ from this kind of generic yoga, and foremost among them is the Himalayan School of Traditional Yoga (HSTY). This world-renowned yoga institution, with a clear focus on propagation of authentic, traditional yoga, is the vision of Mohanji, a world-renowned humanitarian and philanthropist, who has dedicated his life to serving the world and is the founder of several global organisations such as Mohanji Foundation, Ammucare Charitable Trust, ACT Foundation, World Consciousness Alliance and others, that are active in more than 25 countries.

Himalayan School of Traditional Yoga (HSTY) is dedicated to propagating traditional yoga, i.e. the essence of yoga as per the original teachings codified in the scriptures by Maharishi Patanjali. Founded by Mohanji, HSTY’s mission is to promote a culture of yoga and make it accessible to all of mankind, beyond boundaries of country, religion, gender, class and wealth. HSTY is a Registered Yoga School with Yoga Alliance (USA) and an Associate Institute member of Indian Yoga Association.

Meanwhile, on the modern personalization front, the advent of genetics has changed the game altogether, with capabilities now existing for predicting chances for developing hundreds of common lifestyle diseases, as well as for providing personalized epigenetic lifestyle modifications for keeping such diseases at bay.

At the forefront of this sunrise research domain is Vieroots Wellness Solutions, whose EPLIMO is the first such genetics-based health-tech solution in India, which is deployed as an Artificial Intelligence powered smartphone app.

EPLIMO stands for Personalized Epigenetic Lifestyle Modifications.  Under EPLIMO a client first undergoes a genetic test called VieGenome to detect chances for developing any among 200 lifestyle diseases and fine-tunes it with a detailed Metabolic Assessment. Based on this combined Geno-Metabolic Report, a detailed set of personalized lifestyle modifications are suggested in diet, supplements, exercises, yoga asanas, meditation techniques and more. EPLIMO is the frontier of wellness solutions anywhere in the world, which is scientifically validated to keep over 200 diseases at bay.

EPLIMO is the brainchild of renowned wellness evangelist, pioneer of Indian biohacking & author, Sajeev Nair. It is only destiny that these two giants in their own spheres – Mohanji & Sajeev Nair – are now joining hands to advocate personalized yoga, which will change the face of therapeutic yoga forever with high efficacy and safety. Apart from providing personalized yoga therapy, the alliance will do cutting-edge research in unravelling the underlying links connecting yoga & meditation with epigenetics.

“At Vieroots our mission is to empower people to take charge of their own health, which we want to achieve by providing tools, education and products which are derived from ancient Indian wellness wisdom, but backed by modern science.  We are quite excited about the possibilities on integrating Yoga and meditation with epigenetic science.” says Dr. Sajeev Nair who is also the Chairman and Managing Director of Vieroots Wellness Solutions Pvt Ltd.

Through this collaboration there will be extensive research on the impact of specific yoga processes on prevention of various lifestyle diseases. This is the first time in the world that there is an ambitious research initiative like this to harness the power of yoga & meditation with genetic knowledge to create personalized yoga therapies.

The Vieroots-HSTY alliance also offers great opportunities for Wellness Professionals, who are well-versed in yoga & meditation to gain from this new world-class platform.

“Traditional yoga holds incredible wealth of knowledge from our ancient sages for humans to elevate themselves not just physically, but mentally and spiritually as well. HSTY is excited to partner this approach with Vieroots’ modern methods and add value to people around the world.” Says, Devi Mohan, Director of HSTY.

  • Telemedicine is changing healthcare and saving lives in India.

Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh)[India], May 10: India’s health care system is close to a collapse due to the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. With more than 20 million infected citizens and more than 226 thousand deaths, India is going through an unimaginable crisis. Pictures of distraught families counting their dead and sick people being turned away from hospitals amidst the most significant health crisis in history worry the whole planet.

Relaxation of measures definitely did not help this horrific scenario. Despite warnings of Covid-19 risks, the people of India still enjoyed elaborate wedding parties, sports matches, and festivals. India’s health system was unprepared for the new wave that hit the country so devastatingly. The lack of health care, personnel, beds, and oxygen brought terrible consequences. On top of all that, geographical barriers pose a tremendous challenge for the health system too.

Many people in India do not have access to primary healthcare.

A significant portion of India’s population is not getting the most primary health care. The country has a doctor-to-patient ratio of 1:10.189, which is approximately lower than the 1:1,000 recommended by the WHO. The situation in the rural parts of India is devastating – the people need three times as many nurses and five times as many paramedics it has today. The coronavirus has proven the urgent need for a paradigm shift in the provision of primary care. Instead of patients coming to doctors, it should be the other way around. Medical practitioners had to find a way to reach out to society’s most vulnerable and distant parts.

Access to quality primary care has always been a massive problem in the Indian healthcare system. The country has a devastating shortage of around 600,000 doctors, and over two million nurses reported the Centre for Disease Dynamics, Economics & Policy (CDDEP). There is also a worrying shortage of radiologists; there are over 150.000 of the positions unfilled.

However, slowly but surely, things are changing for the better.

    Telemedicine is a game-changer

Thanks to telemedicine which enables treating patients remotely, there is a new horizon in the public health domain of India. Telehealth plays a critical role in India’s health system and is now needed more than ever. It is a technologically and digitally advanced method of health care that has provided immense help to those required during these challenging times. Patients can now connect with doctors and seek advice no matter the distance, merely using smartphones or computers. It’s a much-needed boost to the system that has suffered from the adverse effects of poverty and geographical barriers.

Sprint Medical offers services in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, and specializes in telemedicine and cares for all of the patient’s health needs. Thanks to the high-end digital solutions, Sprint Medical provides affordable care – anytime, anyplace. Sprint Medical allows the patients to choose the best doctors from all over India and book appointments online. They offer assisted doctor consultations where a nurse will help patients in the process and uses advanced IoT-connected devices that allow doctors to have correct diagnostics virtually.

    The rise of virtual healthcare

Using integrated end-to-end solutions, doctors can be virtually present to care and follow-up on their remote patients. Sprint Medical collects patient’s real-time vitals, EKG, Blood Glucose Monitoring, risk factors, red flags, and anything else that needs to be checked and monitored.

Telemedicine has throughout 2020 shown that it’s an excellent medium to provide healthcare to those who lack the chance to get help in person. The method is as efficient as it is cost-effective. Doctors are now able to manage patients and filter out those who need to be hospitalized. For others, doctors use telemedicine to check their symptoms, advise about required tests, medication and do follow-ups.

Thanks to advanced technology, patients can now be monitored at home, with doctors tracking their progress and intervening if needed. Healthcare is shifting from hospital to home, giving patients the ultimate access to care 24/7 via mobile phones.

Getting people to use these new digital platforms had its struggling moments, but today, both doctors and patients adopted telemedicine as one of the primary healthcare delivery channels. With all of the OPDs closed due to lockdown, most were still able to maintain the consultation charges identical to the OPDs on these platforms.

This unprecedented rise in teleconsultations, telepathology, teleradiology, and e-pharmacies is expected to push India’s telemedicine market to reach $5.5 billion by 2025. New telemedicine platforms are popping in India, with start-ups such as Phable, Practo, mFine, CallHealth, and Lybrate.

Every patient deserves to get at least primary care. The future has come, and it has connected the patient and the doctors. All the information is tracked on Electronic Medical Record platforms vital in creating these care ecosystems in India. Remote healthcare, telemedicine, and teleconsultation meet the unmatched needs of the healthcare resources required.

Telehealth is the future of medicine.

The pandemic has proven that all of the parties involved need to invest in developing the tool that is undoubtedly the future of home healthcare. Because of its convenience and cost-effectiveness, remote monitoring and telemedicine services boost the system significantly.

Telemedicine provides invaluable benefits. There are now devices that can monitor patient’s stats such as pulse, saturation pulse, and ECG in real-time. This data can also be stored and analyzed, enhancing the safety and security outcome of patients at home. Providing a real-time solution depending on real-time information available on the platforms is maybe one of the most significant benefits of this new technology.

For all these reasons, telemedicine poses a significant improvement in primary healthcare. No less significantly, Telehealth will help the future evolution of science immensely. A large pool of data available for future research and analysis will lead to evolutionary guidelines and breakthroughs.

Although Virtual Doctor consultation is still somewhat of a novelty in India, citizens have quickly adopted this new pillar of healthcare. This shows that while Covid-19 has impacted India in the most detrimental ways, the country now has an excellent opportunity to become a digital health leader.

  • Optimus PharmaSeeks Emergency Approval to Conduct Phase 3 Clinical Trial of Molnupiravir for COVID-19 in India

Hyderabad [Telangana], April 27: Dr. D. Srinivas Reddy, Chairman, and CEO of Optimus Pharma announced that they have filed for seeking emergency approval for Phase 3 Clinical Trial from the Drugs Controller General of India. Once the approval is granted for Phase 3 Clinical Trial, we would be extensively accelerating the manufacturing of our in-house developed generic version of Molnupiravir for making it available in the Indian market as soon as possible. Optimus Pharma is committed to halting the pandemic across the nation and ensuring immediate relief to all those who have been infected with the highly virulent SARS-CoV-2.

Optimus Pharma is pleased to announce the development of oral Molnupiravir on the fast lane. Optimus Pharma is becoming a key player in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic in India has already achieved very high production levels of Favipiravir one of our flagship drugs for COVID-19 infection. In a bid to develop and diversify our anti-viral portfolio especially against SARS-CoV-2, we are here with yet another promising drug to compensate for the lack of antiviral drugs in the market further diversifying our antivirals portfolio. In hindsight of the raging second wave, Molnupiravir has been developed for non-hospitalized mild to moderate infections of SARS-CoV-2. Optimus Pharma is aggressively pushing for achieving scalability for 800mg dose of the drug.

Our available pre-clinical data on Molnupiravir already demonstrated that there were no adverse clinical signs and mortality observed in any of the treatment groups, as compared to the control group of animals with high efficacy and thereby effectively neutralizing virulence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the test group as compared to control group.

The drug is effective against a variety of viruses that use an RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), as is the case with SARS-CoV-2 which is directly responsible for the transcription of Viral m-RNA of the virus in the infected subject. Early in vitro tests of Molnupiravir on SARS-CoV-2 revealed a steady decrease in virus output that was proportional to the dose of Molnupiravir used. Since the RdRp of SARS-CoV-2 and SARS-CoV, which the drug was designed to treat, has 99.1% nucleotide similarity hence, this was possible. Repeated drug exposure quickly neutralized virus populations, ensuring that none of the random mutations mediate drug resistance. As the drug is introduced in higher amounts, the titer levels and genome output of SARS-CoV-2 decrease exponentially.

It has been observed that Molnupiravir is only marginally successful in preventing extreme SARS-CoV-2 infection that is severe cases of the infection. This might have been the reason for their withdrawal and continue the trial only with non-hospitalized patients that are subjects with mild to moderate infection. We aim to do the same and establish its efficacy in the same treatment group.

Phase 2 Clinical Trial study on enrolled 202 non-hospitalized adults is already made available by the innovator of the molecule. Virological analysis was characterized by a marked decrease in positive viral culture in subjects who received Molnupiravir (all doses) relative to placebo – at day 5: 0% (0/47) for Molnupiravir and 24% (6/25) for placebo. Furthermore, the secondary objective for a faster decrease in infectious virus among people with early COVID-19 who were treated with Molnupiravir is encouraging and Phase 3 Clinical Trials are warranted for checking the efficacy of the molecule across demographics, particularly as the SARS-CoV-2 virus continues to spread and evolve globally.

Unlike the current drugs being administered intravenously, Molnupiravir is administered orally. This makes it a promising drug to halt the disease progression in the early stages as well as mount a powerful response against moderate infection levels. The fact that this molecule can be consumed as an orally administered drug in the form of an 800mg capsule renders a maverick advantage to achieve scalability in terms of upscaling from gm scale to multi-ton levels in a short time frame, thereby ensuring availability in the Indian market at a comparatively exponential scale. In vitro assays indicate that it is significantly more effective than the drugs being used currently, and the safety profile appears to be satisfactory.

  • Silent sufferers: It’s time to talk about Pelvic Pain

Pelvic pain often goes undiagnosed, correct diagnosis is the key to treatment

New Delhi [India], April 26: Pudendal nerve is one of the main nerves in the pelvis and is closely involved with genital sensation, urinary and bowel functions. Irritation or damage of this nerve often presents with pain and/or altered sensation in the genital, rectal region or deep inside the pelvis.

Mimicking a plethora of symptoms, the patients may present to several different specialties including urologists, neurologists, colorectal surgeons, gynaecologists, general surgeons, and general physicians, but the problem often remains undiagnosed due to low awareness about the condition. Conditions with overlapping symptoms involving different specialities often fall through the hoop, with no single speciality able to take ownership and address all components of the problem.

“Similar was the case with a 24-year-old male who presented with severe pelvic pain for the last 18 months. He had been having severe difficulties in sitting for more than 5 minutes and gave his exams lying down. The initial symptoms started with penile pain and burning sensation that gradually progressed to the testicular, buttock, and rectal pain. This was accompanied by the feeling as if he has a urinary infection with burning, difficulty emptying the bladder, and poor urinary flow. Although he had problems sitting he felt much better when sitting on a toilet seat.” Said Dr Amod Manocha, Senior Consultant & Head, Pain Management Services, Max Hospital, Saket

Due to the lack of specific tests, the diagnosis of this condition remains a challenge. Investigations are requested to support the diagnosis and rule out other conditions which may present similarly. These may include special MRI scans and nerve tests. Resolution of pain after a nerve block, even if temporary, supports the diagnosis of pudendal neuralgia. Pudendal Neuralgia is known to be associated with many other conditions such as dysfunctional voiding, painful bladder syndrome, Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome, chronic prostatitis etc.

“Despite visiting many specialists, trying many medications there was no relief. All my investigations were coming back as normal and some specialists even suggested that it was all in my head. Convinced that there is a problem and unable to find a cause, I started doing internet research and made extensive notes for almost three months before suspecting that the source of my problem may be related to the Pudendal nerve. Then started the journey of trying to find a specialist who can confirm my suspicion and help me, finally I found Dr Amod Manocha and decided to take a trip with my family to Delhi for a consultation.” Said the patient

“History, examination and investigations pointed towards the suspicion of Pudendal neuralgia, and this was further strengthened by the relief from the nerve block. This young man subsequently underwent radiofrequency treatment of the pudendal nerve and this helped improve his sitting ability, penile pain and urination difficulty. Following the treatment, he was able to sit and have a meal with my family after a long time. This may be a routine thing for most of us but was a big milestone for him. The pain and other symptoms reduced substantially with an overall improvement of about 65% compared to the pre-treatment levels. He is a very motivated patient and easily adopted the lifestyle modifications such as using a coccyx cushion while sitting, avoiding constipation, tight clothes, and bike riding. His compliance with physiotherapy has been good and now that the symptoms are better controlled we are slowly reducing his medicines intending to come off them.” Added Dr Manocha

Management of this condition requires active patient participation and the use of a multidisciplinary approach. Input from different specialists such as urologists, colorectal surgeons, gynaecologists are often required with a team approach to evaluate and address different components of the symptoms.  A multidisciplinary approach involves using a combination of lifestyle changes, medications, physiotherapy, psychological techniques, and pain-relieving interventions such as injections. Lifestyle changes are aimed at protecting the nerve and reducing its irritation. Combining these with other modalities mentioned previously provides the patients with the best opportunity of having a successful outcome.

  • Marg Mart: A Life-Saver in the Age of Covid-19

Caption: Founder of Marg Mart: Karan Singh; Co-founders: Vijay, Manish, Harsh

New Delhi [India], April 26: The test of fire makes fine steel and the pandemic has proven to be one of the toughest challenges this world has witnessed in recent times, resulting in devastating consequences on healthcare systems across the world, and India is no exception to this rule. The governments, both at the centre and state levels have been witnessing their capabilities being stretched to the limits and reach a breaking point. News of the scarcity of medicines or their unavailability in certain areas, rising death tolls and the ever-increasing rate of infections has been adding to the anxiety of the already suffering patients and their loved ones. At a time when the public sector is being overwhelmed with this global challenge, it is the moral responsibility of the private sector to step in and contribute.

As the nation grapples with a herculean task that its healthcare system has never faced before, conventional ideas and rigid thinking will bear no fruit. An infusion of innovation and fresh blood is required in the workforce ¾ minds which are unafraid of exploring hitherto unknown frontiers and not beholden to accepted ways of thinking.

Four young Australia returned students have shown the willingness to face this test with fortitude and resolved to pass it with flying colours. Character is not born but displayed in a crisis. This adage has been proven right by the restless energy that Karan Singh and his 3 friends have exuded to find a way to reduce the negative impact of the pandemic. As the government machinery was busy combating the coronavirus, with some assistance from the private sector, four young interns at Marg ERP Ltd. refused to be mere spectators and watch the unfolding of this disaster from the sidelines. They decided to apply their passion and perspective on the ongoing catastrophe and invent solutions that others missed as they lay in plain sight.

In his own words, Karan describes how he felt underutilized and under what circumstances the idea of Marg Mart struck his mind, “We had to come back from Australia after COVID19 struck and I joined our family business as an Intern. My daddy is very particular about learning the basics and soon I was attending calls of customers to help them run operations smoothly. I always felt incomplete because I was inexperienced but wanted to do something unique, something extraordinary. When the second wave of COVID19 struck we started getting calls from various corners about the availability of life-saving medicines. After a few calls, an idea struck my mind – to provide the availability of medicines in the form of a website to visitors. Something from where users may find various medicines. I discussed the idea with my friends and they were game for it. We gathered the courage to discuss the idea with parents as we had no idea how to proceed.”

Karan’s situation was like many other entrepreneurs who get ideas but don’t know what to do next. But, thankfully, he got early support. “We discussed the idea with my father and his first reaction was – heck, why didn’t we do this in the first COVID19 wave. To my surprise, he gave us a development team and somehow we launched the www.MargMart.com website in a matter of 3-4 days.” Marg Mart answers the most important question in the minds of patients & caretakers – where is the medicine available? Marg Martis a confident declaration from these young Turks about their ability to turn the tide of this calamity in favour of the people of this country. For these young minds, there couldn’t have been a superior form of nationalist expression than service to the nation through action and not empty criticism.

Marg Mart is an online platform that assists customers to locate the medical stores or distributors where the medicines they need are available. In one fell swoop, Marg Mart circumvents the need to physically visit the stores or go through the trouble of calling them to enquire about the availability of medicines and saves time which might be crucial for the survival of patients. Ask Karan about the future plans for Marg Mart and he says, “Our first objective is to save lives. The future plan is something that we will do after some success stories. We have more than 6 crores of line items about the availability of various goods but we will think about them later when the times are good.” Karan behind this initiative intends to create a bridge that connects medical retailers and distributors with customers who are in dire need of medical supply.

The user interface of www.MargMart.com is simple. All the user has to do is to enter the name of the medicine and the city or pin-code in which the user would like to locate the medicine. Results are listed by retailers and distributors. The results will provide users with all the information they need: the name of the store, the complete address, contact details, the pin-code of the area in which the store is located and even a direction link to reach the store using a map. Karan and his team have been working tirelessly to expand the database and improve the user interface to ensure that Marg Mart becomes a seamless experience for its users.

It is said that the young can see farther than others because they stand on the shoulders of those who came before them. In keeping alive the tradition of service through innovation that the founders of Marg ERP Ltd. have established, the young generation is following in their footsteps. Marg Mart is the product of the vision and ambition of the young entrepreneurial minds that are eager to put their ideas into reality and leave a mark. This ambition though is coupled with a deep sense of empathy and social awareness without which Marg Mart wouldn’t have been created. It is a non-profit initiative and one of its kind taken by any corporate entity in India so far. With the launch of Marg Mart, Karan and his team hope to alleviate, if not completely eradicate, the misery that has been unleashed on Indian masses over the last few months. Marg Mart is here to serve.

  • In urban India, 50 million people in 15 cities have no access to safe, affordable drinking water: Report

Clear looking water could be deceptive and detrimental to health: Warn Experts

New Delhi [India], April 24: Healthy drinking water is very important for good health. A safe water supply ensures the health of a country, yet it is woefully under-prioritised, globally. And in India, it’s at the lowest echelon. In urban India, 50 million people in 15 cities have no access to safe, affordable drinking water, reveals a UNICEF, India report. [1]

Healthy drinking water is arguably one of the essential commodities, which plays a pivotal role in ensuring good health as it helps channelise the metabolic processes of the body. More so, in the current COVID scenario, water helps stay healthy because proper hydration works as an important factor, helping your body fight the COVID virus. Test your water regularly for pathogens to ensure that the water you are drinking is safe.

    Know Your Water

    • The Source of water and how it is treated is very important to understand
    • Water pipelines to your homes must be well maintained
    • Local storage like over-head water tanks, water coolers, RO filters must be cleaned regularly to avoid contamination
    • The water you drink must contain the right minerals to maintain body balance

Speaking on the essence of knowing healthy water, Ms. Manjari Chandra, Consultant Nutritional Medicine, said, “Amid the scarcity of water, it is very important to know about the purity of water available for consumption. It is often seen that people usually check if the water is clear while drinking. If it looks clean, they assume that it is safe to drink. But this is often not the case. Water looking clean might not always be safe for drinking.”

Adding further, Ms. Chandra said, “Healthy drinking water is very important for good health. But unhealthy water that the majority of urban Indians drink to survive due to the lack of knowledge about healthy water, is equally detrimental to health. Therefore, it is quintessential for everyone especially those who are living in urban India to know whether the water they consume is healthy or not because the sources, it comes from and the way it is treated, determine its purity and safety for consumption.”

Drinking water comes from a variety of sources including public water systems, private wells, or bottled water. However, in urban India, the majority of the population resides in private households wherein privately owned and operated sources of drinking water, such as wells, cisterns, and springs are available. But people hardly know how the water they consume reaches them. How it is contaminated during the treatment and supply stages etc.

“The density of population in urban India is quite high and so is the scarcity of safe drinking water. Therefore, the majority of the population consumes water from privately owned water sources. In such a situation, knowing the way drinking water reaches them, turns very important considering its safety and purity. Usually, due to the hectic schedule, people living in urban India don’t notice the discrepancy in the water pipelines of their own houses, which more often causes water contamination. So, it is obligatory for an individual to have a close eye on its maintenance. There are other sources of contamination that people usually don’t pay heed to such as the water tank placed on their roofs if not cleaned at regular intervals contaminates the water stored in it,” says Dr. Prof. Sanjay Rai, Professor, Dept. of Community Medicine, AIIMS, President, IPHA.

“Also, in urban India, Reverse Osmosis (RO) is one of the most effective water treatment processes being practised and widely used for water purification by the majority of the population. It is generally used for home water treatment to remove salts, chemical toxins, organic contaminants, dyes, pesticides, and microbes. In this process, the raw water is forced (with pressure) through a dense membrane filter that prevents the passing of impurities. Although, the Reverse Osmosis process has certain benefits such as it does not produce or use any harmful chemicals, yet water consumed after the treatment through the RO process is devoid of useful minerals. Unless minerals are added back, the RO water could have harmful effects on health. Therefore, it is very important that the water you drink must contain the right minerals to maintain the balance of the body,” added, Dr. Rai.

In India, access to treated piped water continues to be inadequate for the majority of the population. Water from major sources like tube wells and hand pumps is also found to be unsafe as they are known to be carriers of waterborne diseases. While people blame unhygienic food for most of the ailments, waterborne diseases such as cholera, acute diarrhoeal diseases, typhoid, and viral hepatitis have caused 10,738 deaths, over the last five years since 2017. Of this, acute diarrhoeal diseases have caused maximum deaths followed by viral hepatitis, typhoid, and cholera. [2]
