Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], September 22: “My karma is akin to an Usher in a Cinema Hall who guides the viewer to watch and enjoy entertainment,” Girish Wankhede humbly describes his work. Girish has been conferred with more than 50 awards for his valuable contribution to the Entertainment industry. At an event concluded earlier this month, he was felicitated and awarded the Cotton City Excellence Kala Gaurav Award at the third edition of Cotton City International Film Festival 2021 at Holiday Inn, Mumbai.

Girish Wankhede has been in the entertainment industry for almost two decades, managing cinema, multiplexes, exhibition, distribution, and marketing. During this period, his valuable contribution to the Entertainment industry and excelling in the craft has made him an inspiration to many others.

With the theatrical cinema business almost at a standstill, Wankhede was one of the earliest experts to predict the upsurge of OTT Platforms. Being in the exhibition, marketing and distribution of films, with his astute understanding of cinema, incisive research and balanced analysis, he began reviewing the films on the OTT medium. He soon discovered that a layperson is now more confused about which film to watch, and with several OTT platforms hitting the market, it became more complex for the viewer.

Hence, Girish Wankhede launched his own YouTube Channel, beginning with reviewing films on the OTT and following it with a weekly programme segment named WOR – Wankhede OTT Recommendations. He watches films on all the platforms and then selects six titles, categorising them as Good, Better and Best. His channel now has an archive of over 52 titles, with each of them picking up the best six titles of that particular week.

In addition, there are 2 to 3 major REVIEWS of films/web series every week by Girish Wankhede and then a weekly SPOT ON section that has the three best movies/series on the OTT Platforms genre specific.

One of the four shows he has on the YouTube channel is a monthly Educational and informational Knowledge Series that analyse fundamental aspects of why certain films are selected for National and International Awards and covers issues regarding the film industry.

Among notable awards conferred to Wankhede are the Mid-day Icon award, Tassel Youth Icon award and appreciation certificate by late Maharashtra Dy Chief Minister R R Patil for his contribution towards the Marathi film industry for holding Marathi film Festival in Multiplexes for five years. He has been named OTT expert by the media with his quotes in almost all top dailies and publications like Forbes, Dainik Bhaskar, Times of India, Mid-day, among others, regarding his views on OTT upsurge and periodic assessment of the Bollywood industry.

What makes his review stand apart is the knowledge he imparts with it. For instance, if one picks up a review of a Malayalam film on women empowerment, he makes a mention of other outstanding films on women empowerment in foreign languages, Hindi films on the same subject and then a brief yet incisive profile of the director, cast and the subject of that particular film.

Girish Wankhede’s reviews are more of education, information, enlightenment, offering in-depth analysis of actors and cast and crew of any particular film. Several publications, one being the trade journal Complete Cinema, regularly carry his weekly column Wankhede OTT Recommendations.

Hyderabad, September 23: Santosh Manchala has been a true inspiration for many of our generation. He proved on the big stage that hard work and dedication is what matters to succeed in life. Manchala gave up his formal education after completing his SSC, and financial restraints confronted him with difficult choices to make. Unfortunately, he was only met with rejections owing to his poor communication skills. But this did not dishearten Santosh, and he went back home and started to work on his communication skills. Moving back to Hyderabad, this time, Santosh got a position as a technical support associate. Working for eight months, Santosh decided to complete his masters and got admitted to Swami Vivekananda PG College in Secunderabad to complete his MBA.

He worked several part-time jobs during his MBA and later found a great opportunity with the Bank of America after completing his MBA. During his time at his new job, Manchala upskilled himself and got trained in the proficient use of Oracle applications which allowed him to make a switch to the IT industry. Moving to the IT sector, Manchala joined AppLabs. This switch proved to be critical since his next organisation, Triniti Corporation, gave him an H1B visa to the US, which allowed him to open a new chapter in his career. In September of 2017, he became a part of Weight Watchers, one of the world’s leading weight loss firms.

September 23: Noted actor Subrat Dutta has bagged the BEST ACTOR AWARD at the 6th DIFF for his intense portrayal of the character of Josef in the film Josef – Born in the Grace. Uttrakhand’s Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj has handed over the trophy to Subrat Dutta during the Closing Ceremony. Subrat Dutta, National School of Drama Graduate, has acted in Hindi films like films like Talaash, Tango Charlie, Zameen, The Shaukeens, Rakhcharitra, Bhootnath Returns and Bengali films Chaturanga, Bibar and Jor. Subrat has been awarded with the Best Actor Award before at the Osian’s-Cinefan Film Festival in Delhi for Bengali film Bibar and also in the Egypt Film Festival for the Hindi film Madholal Keep Walking.

Santanu Ganguly said, “The film festivals should more and more focus on good content and not only glamour. The 6th DIFF honoured the veteran actor Victor Banerjee with the LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD for his immense contribution towards Cinema. He has acted in films made by veteran Hollywood filmmakers Roman Polanski, James Ivory, Sir David Lean, Jerry London, Ronald Neame, and Indian masters like – Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, Shyam Benegal, Ram Gopal Varma, Bangladeshi filmmaker Montazur Rahman Akbar. DIFF, Victor Banerjee and Subrat Dutta acted film Josef – Born in the Grace shown as the Closing Film of the festival. Josef – Born in the Grace, directed by internationally acclaimed director Sushant Misra and produced by Ashok Mahapatra. Victor Banerjee said, “many film festivals and organising wanted to honour me with the Lifetime Achievement Award, but I refused them gently, but I am happily accepting the Lifetime Achievement Award in Dehradun because I made Mussoorie my home 20 years ago. The film is entirely based and completely shot in Uttrakhand, and the festival is Dehradun International Film Festival, so this time I have all the reason to accept the honour.” Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal presented the trophy to the veteran actor at the Closing Ceremony of the 6th DIFF.

September 22: This year, Gujarat is all set to celebrate Navratri in full grandeur. Last year, Navratri was not celebrated anywhere due to Corona. So this time, the whole Gujarat is eagerly waiting for Navratri with double zeal.

This time, people also showed a new enthusiasm for designer Navratri outfits. Promoting this enthusiasm further, IDT has organized a massive competition for its fashion design students, in which the students themselves will create the Navratri outfits. The competition will be held in 3 rounds – Illustration, Accessory Making and Garment Construction. All the fabrics needed for the garments and accessories will be supplied by F-Studio. The participants’ accessories and garments will also be displayed at F-Studio’s store, where the Surtis can shop their designer garments for upcoming Navratri. The entire sale amount of the garment will go to the participants. For Round 1- Illustration, Vanitaa Rawat, Swasti Golwala and Aarushi Upreti were invited as Jury members.

A new creative concept has also emerged through this competition. An IDT student has designed such a garment which can be worn as nine different outfits for the nine days of Navratri.

Anupam Goyal, Director of IDT, said, “This is a new endeavour of IDT to provide a bigger industry-oriented platform to its students. IDT has always pushed its students towards practical experience, and this contest is a big medium of that.”
