  • How did Gujarat become a centre of excellence in Heart Transplant Surgery? – Dr Dhaval Naik explains in details

How did Gujarat become a centre of excellence in Heart Transplant Surgery? – Dr Dhaval Naik explains in details

    Read Time:3 Minute, 19 Second

April 12: A heart transplant is an operation in which a diseased, failing heart is replaced with a healthier heart, received from brain dead patient. This treatment is reserved for patients, suffering from heart failure and whose condition hasn’t improved enough with medications or other surgeries.  The chances of survival improve drastically after heart transplant surgery with appropriate person selection and post-operative care.

CIMS Hospital in Gujarat has performed 14 heart transplants last year and surpassed 25 in 5 years. Thus, Ahmedabad rapidly slides up in numbers across the country.   “Apart from the best surgical skills, other important factors helped for this achievement” quoted Dr Dhaval Naik, Heart Transplant surgeon in Ahmedabad.

The first and foremost objective is the proper allocation of organs from braindead patients and thanks to SOTTO, State Organ and Tissue Transplantation Organization. SOTTO is a web application designed and developed for Govt. of Gujarat, for supporting the Cadaver Organ Harvesting Transplantation that will be performed in various registered Government and Private Hospitals located across the state. Till the last record, 1244 recipients are registered in SOTTO, waiting for different transplant surgery. Also, 374 organs are allocated so far which includes 103 livers, 184 kidneys, 33 hearts, 44 lungs and 10 pancreases. In summary, SOTTO has made the organ donation and allocation system smooth in Gujarat state.

Everyone knows that heart transplant surgery is not economical and costs almost 20 to 25 lakhs to the patient. The Government of Gujarat did not miss the opportunity to help needy patients. Mr Vijay Rupani, prior chief minister of the state, called me at his home to review other states’ compensation policies for heart transplant recipients. After a meaningful meeting, he agreed to grant INR 7.5 lakhs to each enrolled patient. That was a very bold and epic move and the community will always remain thankful to him, says Dr Naik. Another important issue was the need for an air ambulance for transportation of organs and the government is looking positively to addressing this issue.

Again, while on roads, the heart has to travel even faster within heavy traffic situations in the city. Gujarat police understood the importance of the ‘Green Corridor’ long back. A ‘green corridor’ is a special route that is managed in a way that all the traffic signals that come along the route of the hospital where an organ is harvested and the hospital where it is to be transplanted, are green and controlled manually. Nowadays it’s a single phone call and police draw a route to establish it, thanks to Gujarat Police, added Dr Naik.

The most crucial part for any transplant programme to develop and sustain is organ donation willingness by diseased family members. Let’s simplify it. A patient could be declared dead in two ways; one is if the heart stops working and the second is the brain. In the second scenario, patient’s organs can be donated with families consent. A braindead person can donate various organs e.g. heart, lungs, hands, liver, kidneys, eyes, pancreas, intestine, skin and bones. There are number of NGOs working to motivate organ donation activity in the state. Because of their efforts to promote organ donation programs, Gujarat has become the top state in this field.

CIMS Hospital in Ahmedabad is having a team of extremely talented doctors. Most of them are trained in world’s renowned hospitals and are having a tremendous amount of expertise to treat heart failure patients. Most praising, the hospital runs a state of the art  Heart Failure Clinic, where they enrol all patients with weak hearts and engage them in treatment and education. So far, CIMS hospital has performed 27 heart transplants with results that match international standards and this achievement put Ahmedabad and thus Gujarat on top rank in India. I wish more hospitals should learn and perform heart transplants to help the needy patients most, Dr Dhaval Naik desires.

  • Vishwaraj Jadeja becomes the first Indian athlete to skate 100 kms Nonstop on the Frozen Sea of Sweden

Vishwaraj Jadeja becomes the first Indian athlete to skate 100 kms Nonstop on the Frozen Sea of Sweden

    Read Time:2 Minute, 56 Second

New Delhi (India), April 12: Indian ice-speed-skating athlete Vishwaraj Jadeja recently became the first Indian athlete to have skated 100 kms on the Frozen Sea in Sweden, as part of the Sea Ice Classic, Lulea.  It was the first time an Indian has attempted and finished such a feat. His finish time was 4 hours 53 minutes which was right on top of the time sheets. The temperatures dropped to -5°C with occasional rain and snow. He aims to finish 200kms next year.

Vishwaraj has had a fantastic season where he qualified for the World Cups which are a stepping stone to the Winter Olympics. While he was able to participate in only 1 World Cup event, he was 1/4th of a second away from Olympic qualifying time in the Mass Start race.

The Olympics require qualification time and participation in 3 World Cup events. Unfortunately, Vishwaraj was unable to race in the other 2 World Cups due to various logistical issues. “Once the visa did not arrive on time since embassies are understaffed and thus overworked, due to the pandemic. Another time a sponsor did not come through on their promise and we couldn’t reach a race.”, he says. He highlights the struggles of an athlete competing in a sport that isn’t “famous” or “glamorous” like many others in India. He says with a smile, “For the past many years, official funds are not released on time from relevant organizations which hampers all planning during the race season. With India lacking any proper winter sports infrastructure, the odds have always been stacked against us anyway. Some last races getting cancelled due to the pandemic did not help either.”

Long-track speed-skating is an elite sport and it has been a part of the Winter Olympics Charter since almost a 100 years. Elite because there are 14 gold medals to be won which is more than any other sport at the Winter Olympics.

Vishwaraj is the 3rd generation of a sporting family. His grandfather played Hockey for the Gujarat University. His aunt represented India in Roller Figure Skating at the World Championships. So it is only normal that for him the pursuit was the Olympics.

As mentioned earlier, he has had a tremendous season this year.

    – 1 National Record on the 5kms broken for India (His 66th National Record for India)

    – Qualified for the World Cups (Mass Start)

    – 2nd position on the Annual Club Races of SVU (outdoor)  (first Indian )

    – 2nd position on the Closing Marathon of the rack (outdoor)  (first Indian )

    – 100kms on the Frozen Swedish Ice Sea Classic. (The first Indian to attempt and complete this)

About his achievement in the 100kms attempt he says “It was not going to be enough to just show up now. The “Indian” ice skater had to make an impact. And I am proud we did exactly that!”

India does not have a proper Winter Sports infrastructure today. In spite of that India has had Winter Olympians. “I was not supposed to get so far but I did it with less than 10% of required resources. I just imagine what could happen if we get even 10% more resources. I mean, it took Sachin Tendulkar 6 World Cups to win 1.“ He closes by saying, “Almost made it this time around. But well, almost doesn’t matter. I am from India so it’s only a matter of time that I get to the Olympics.”

New Delhi (India), April 9: In a unique tribute to The Kashmir Files, the Bollywood movie that has become a super hit, Delhi-based Kanha Mehandi Art and Kriti Verma Art have come together to etch the face of actor Anupam Kher, who plays the role of Pushkar Nath in the movie, using henna art.

Kanha Mehandi Art is a leading Mehandi house in New Delhi and delivers superior bridal Mehandi services with its innovative designs. The Mehandi house specialises in making face sketches using henna art. The Mehandi house displayed its unique specialisation by drawing Anupam Kher’s face on Bigg Boss 12 contestant Kriti Verma’s palm as a special tribute to The Kashmir Files.

“The idea was to use our speciality to present a glimpse of The Kashmir Files and pay a special tribute to the film’s actors, makers, and thousands of Kashmiri Pandits whose life has been captured in the movie. This gesture was a tribute from one art form to another,” said Kriti Verma, Founder of Kriti Verma Art.

Besides having been a participant in Bigg Boss season 12, Kriti, a former GST inspector by profession and a trained dancer, was also seen in Roadies Xtreme in 2018.

“We have seen Salman Khan personally calling up Anupam Kher to congratulate him on his role in the film. Gujarati film ‘Prem Prakaran’ withdrew from theatres so that more shows could be allotted to The Kashmir Files. We also read about a Surat-based textile merchant creating a special saree in honour of the film. All this is justified for the heart-breaking narrative that has taken the whole nation by storm, and we felt we must also pay a tribute in our very own special way,” he said.

The Kashmir Files presents a fictional storyline depicting the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits during the insurgency in Jammu & Kashmir as genocide.
