Annual Event to Commemorate Civilian-Led Peacebuilding in Mindanao Calls Forth Collective Action to Develop Peace

February 11: On the 24th of January 2022, over 22,000 social representatives from 51 countries attended the international peace conference celebrating the Peace Day held virtually. The event commemorated a civilian-led peace agreement made between the Islam and Catholic communities in Mindanao 8 years ago.

Back in 2014, Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL), an international NGO mediated the conflict in Mindanao by proposing a peace agreement by local representatives. Witnessed by Chairman Man Hee Lee of HWPL, the peace agreement was signed by Hon. Esmael G. Mangudadatu, the then Governor of Maguindanao, and Archbishop-Emeritus Fernando Capalla of the Archdiocese of Davao representing local leadership. Since then, the province of Maguindanao and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) declared January 24 as “HWPL Peace Day” and have commemorated it as annual event to reaffirm international cooperation and local partnership for peacebuilding in Mindanao.

Moreover, peace monuments were built honoring the peace agreement in Mindano. The 1st and 2nd Peace Monuments were erected in 2015 and 2016 respectively. In 2021, the third peace monument was unveiled in Cotabato City. Being the first in Luzon, a peace monument in Dingras, Ilocos Norte was unveiled last January 24 as part of the 8th Anniversary event of the HWPL Peace Day celebration. Also, another monument located in Siniloan Integrated National High School is set to unveil on Febraury.

The event, under the theme of “Law of Peace in Heaven and on Earth”, aimed to promote interfaith harmony between religions and raise public support to establish international law for peace.

Key figures gave congratulatory messages including Senate President Vicente Sotto III, Senator Panfilo Lacson, Senator Cynthia Villar, Senator Ronald ‘Bato’ Dela Rosa, Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo, and TV News Anchor Mariz Umali from the Philippines. Keynote speakers from various fields also presented commitment messages declaring their plans on promoting peace in their respective sectors including law, education, youth, women, private business and media.

Prabhu Mahendra Das, Temple President of Sri Sri Radha Madhava Mandir, said that he decided to participate in the World Alliance of Religions’ Peace (WARP) Office organized by HWPL as “a global platform for religious leaders to talk, share, discuss, learn, and grow together harmoniously and peacefully.”For the contribution to peace in the field of religion, he added, “I firmly believe that all religions should enter into a partnership through the form of a Memorandum of Understanding.”

Justice Raoul Victorino (ret), Chairman of Philippine National Prayer Breakfast (PNPB) and Dean of the College of Law of Philippine Christian University (PCU), shared how he was inspired by the “revolutionary movement” that HWPL initiated to endorse global peacebuilding through the draft the “Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW)” by global experts in international law to advocate peace as a global culture and norm. He declared, “I will strive to get the support of the President of the Philippines for the National Solidarity Support of DPCW. At the same time, I will integrate DPCW [education] in the college of law by collaborating with the Philippine Association of Law Schools.”

Also, representing the Philippines education sector, Commissioner Ronald Adamat of the Commissioner on Higher Education (CHED) shared, “The CHED Commission en Banc has issued an endorsement to President Duterte, urging him to declare January 24 as ‘National Peace Day’, that will provide for simultaneous celebration and observance of peace through peace activities, events, and ceremonies by all instrumentalities and agencies of government, including the private sector. This shall also be celebrated and observed in the education sector.”

“Our purpose is to bring all people in the world together to create a world of peace and leave it as a lasting legacy for future generations. To make this world a peaceful place without wars, let us become messengers of peace. Let us remind people around the world of that emotion—a longing for peace—and the Peace Day so they can remember all of this forever,”said Chairman Lee during the closing remarks.

  • “The Last White Man in India” Becomes a Surprise Hit

“The Last White Man in India” Becomes a Surprise Hit

New Delhi (India), February 10: India is a land of enchantment and mysteries. The more you explore, the better you fall for it. If you are wondering how to know more, you have to read more.

Books have always been an integral part of our lives, since ancient times, and guess what? With the emergence of a better and more aware world, people are slowly understanding how books can teach them about a multitude of things.

The Last White Man in India, written by Subhuti Anand Waight, has been launched at Marshall’s Book Café, Berman Chouk, Aundh, Pune on 29th January. The book has become a hit and now there’s a waitlist to read it.

This book offers you a great story with the promise of finding deeper things hidden within you. In a way, you can work upon the “unknown” quadrant of the Johari Window, enhancing your understanding of yourself and others.

Steve Parkhurst is an arrogant English businessman with colonial attitudes, enjoying an easy lifestyle in India. But then his company fails, and to Steve’s dismay, he finds himself begging for a job from a local Indian industrialist.

In this timely novel, titled The Last White Man in India, the tables are turned on the former conquerors. This reflects the shift in today’s global economy, with the growing stature of India and the decline of British power and influence.

This marks the beginning of a challenging journey for Steve, the main character, who steadily loses his English identity and becomes more and more intrigued with the ancient, spiritual aspect of Indian culture.

“I always thought that Pune’s Koregaon Park would make a wonderful setting for a novel,” explained Subhuti Anand Waight, author of this multiracial epic.

“I lived and worked in the Rajneesh Ashram in the 1970s when Osho was teaching there,” Subhuti added. “India is in my blood and bones, that’s why I had to write about it.”

There are secrets to be uncovered as the story unfolds. Steve falls in love with a wealthy Indian woman who reveals herself to be the leader of a Tantric cult, drinking Soma and dancing to ecstasy.

In a parallel subplot, the author recalls the rise and fall of the nineteenth century Thugee Cult, whose devotees robbed and slaughtered travelers in the name of Goddess Kali.

The Rajneesh Ashram also features in the story. “I just had to put it in,” reflected Subhuti. “It adds a spiritual flavor to the romance.”

Subhuti, born in the UK, once worked as a political correspondent in the British Houses of Parliament. He gave it up in 1976 to travel to India, meet Osho and become a Rajneesh sannyasin.

“Koregaon Park has an international flavor due to thousands of foreign visitors and this creates a colorful backdrop for story-telling,” he added. Subhuti is also the author of ‘Wild Wild Guru,’ a personal account of his adventures with Osho in Pune and Oregon.

The Last White Man in India is published by StoryMirror, India’s biggest literature tech platform, and is available in bookstores and online retail platforms.

  • US Born Indian Origin Racer Atharva Desai testing for Formula-3 Series in the UK

US Born Indian Origin Racer Atharva Desai testing for Formula-3 Series in the UK

    Atharva Desai, Arden Motorsports Team

India, February 10: Arden Motorsports Team has tested Atharva Desai, a Young Racing Driver Academy (YRDA) race car driver and offered him the chance to drive their official Formula car. Currently, in his second year at Oxford, UK, and pursuing his Bachelor of Engineering (Motorsport Technology), Atharva has garnered experience in the motorsport world by progressing from go-kart to Formula specification cars in a short period.

Atharva started his racing career at a young age and grew up watching Formula One on television. “I developed my interest in racing when I was eight years old when I first watched F1 on TV,” says Atharva. He started his career at a local go-karting track Allsports Grand Prix. After he learned the fundamentals of racing, he registered in the local karting league. Atharva went on to win the junior karting championship as a rookie post which he won the title in his rookie season in the senior karting league.

Atharva is fast and smooth; his racing teacher Mr. Françoise, the AllSport GP track owner, who was also a retired professional racing driver, commented to Atharva’s father that “He drives like Sir Jackie Stewart.”As, he grew in racing, Atharva registered into karting endurance and heat races. He then moved up the ladder to his first ROTAX nationals’ race, in which he secured 3rd place as a rookie.

One of his most memorable races was a 3-hour iron man endurance race in which he started in P3 (3rd place on the grid) and then, in a short time, jumped to P1 and stayed there for till half time. After the halfway mark, there was a 10-minute break for refuelling the car. After that, the rain started to pour down, but the race continued. After the halfway grid start, he was in P1, but unfortunately, he was hit in the back by another kart behind him, and he spun all the way to last place. “It was unlucky, but I kept my head down and told myself that I had to get back to 1st place. I committed to it and raced my absolute best,” added Atharva. Atharva won the race with a large margin in that short period and even lapped other karts on the track.

A few years ago, a Formula 4 team owner, Momentum sports, reached out to Atharva to test out his Formula 4 car. Positive results came from this first test, resulting in team owners and opportunists noticing him as a potential new talent. After many tests days with various Formula 4 cars, Atharva was ready to compete in the United States Formula 4 championship, and he registered with a Formula 4 team.

However, the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and all racing was suspended until the following year. Atharva moved to Oxford, the UK, for college and searched for local Formula teams, where he found Arden Motorsports and asked if he could test with them. “They interviewed me and then put me in a racing simulator which mimics the exact force feedback as a Formula 3 car. I greatly impressed the team owner both with my maturity and my racing skills.”

East coast of USA, there are many karting tracks, and Atharva has raced many of them while competing in a karting club. He has raced from Pittsburgh down to Florida and gained good racing experience, and he has grown and improved his racecraft. After graduating from Formula cars, he drove on courses across the country. Atharva mentioned: “I drove Formula 3 cars on Sonoma Raceway in California; Formula 4 testing on Radford racetrack in Phoenix; Autobahn Country club in Chicago, Virginia International Raceway, New Jersey Motorsports Park, and Sebring in Florida.”

Atharva has had various racing experiences, from Formula series cars to Grand Touring Cars. “I have raced GT Mustangs and Dodge SRT Hellcats in the past. Both were solid experiences; however, I enjoy Formula series the most.” He practices his race-craft by training in Arden simulators and his simulator at home. “I spend a lot of my time in a realistic racing simulator […] cost-effectively perfecting my racing skills,” says Atharva, “such simulators provide an exceptionally realistic racing experience without the cost of car maintenance and track rentals.” In addition, Atharva spends a lot of his time practising in his simulator or training in the gym. Physical fitness and mental endurance are vital in this sport. “Racing cars require you to push yourselves to the limit, and your mind and body must be perfect for racing these cars consistently.”  Atharva spends around 2 hours doing physical exercises and mental endurance training every day. In addition, he keeps himself extremely fit by maintaining a balanced nutritional diet. “My biggest motivator for racing is to reach Formula 1. Ever since I was young, I always wished to be a Formula 1 world champion. This dream is everything I fight for, and I always make sure to put in my 100% effort towards it.”
