  • ‘Save Babies’ – an initiative to minimise newborn mortality

Exclusive Human Milk Diet isn’t Just Nutrition-it’s Medicine

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], November 17: Prematurity is one of the most prevalent causes of neonatal mortality worldwide. Since these babies are born before time, premature mortality is primarily related to the immaturity of the vital organs, making them prone to a higher risk of infections.

In an initiative to reduce the premature mortality rate under the ‘Save Babies’ campaign, NeoLacta Lifesciences is bringing together professionals, parents and members of clinical, community health, and family support organizations to spread awareness about the importance of Exclusive Human Milk Diet (EHMD).

According to Dr. Geetika Gangwani, Lactation Consultant, “I believe healthcare professionals should come forward and support the initiative of ensuring access to an exclusive human milk for newborn infants, especially those with a birth weight less than or equal to1,250 grams because of the overwhelming evidence supporting human milk nutrition for these tiny ones”.

Feeding is considered as a nutritional emergency and should therefore be included in NICU protocols related to nutrition and feeding. For EHMD to be ensured, the availability of pasteurized donor human milk must be facilitated by strengthening the human milk donation and awareness measures. Furthermore, human milk nutritional products, such as Human Milk-based Fortifier, have been used in over 200 super speciality hospitals over the last 2 years since it was introduced in India. Developed markets such as the US, UK and Europe have had this concept for over 20 years.

Dr. Vikram Reddy, Chief Scientific Officer at NeoLacta Lifesciences, informs, “In research, it has been found that infants fed with an exclusive human milk diet have a lower incidence of respiratory complications, gastrointestinal infections, and other serious health problems.

An Exclusive Human Milk Diet is a combination of Mother’s Milk, screened pasteurized human milk from a qualified donor, and a human milk-based fortifier when required. This ensures the infant is not exposed to any source of bovine milk components, thereby minimising the risks associated with prematurity.

“EHMD also significantly reduces the risk of life-threatening conditions such as Sepsis and Necrotising Enterocolitis which are common for premature infants, says Dr. Vikram Reddy.

The exclusive Human Milk Diet has immense benefits beyond just nutrition. Immunological and anti-infective components are one of the unique benefits of human milk, which ensure protection against viral, bacterial, and fungal infections in infants. This is even more important for premature babies who have immature organs and immune systems. In spite of recent advancements in dairy sciences, these components have not been replicated in artificial products such as Infant formula, thus making them exclusive for human milk and human milk-derived products.

Overall, there is a direct correlation between the maintenance of an exclusive human milk diet and lower mortality when compared to a bovine milk-based diet derived from dairy products. Since human milk cannot be synthesised in labs, a donation from voluntary mothers remains the only source and thus has been rightly referred to as liquid gold. ‘Save Babies’ initiative aims to dispel myths about breast milk donation and encourage mothers who wish to donate the excess breast milk, which can potentially save thousands of lives in India.

In essence, human milk has evolved over millions of years to be the optimal choice of superfood for infants. Human milk isn’t just nutrition—it’s medicine.

    About NeoLacta Lifesciences

NeoLacta is the 1st and only company in India and Asia to have developed a state-of-the-art human milk processing facility compliant to pasteurising guidelines of the World Health Organization along with being ISO 22000:2018 certified, GMP compliant, and FSSAI approved. All proprietary equipment has been designed & built by an in-house engineering team to ensure the highest level of safety, hygiene and quality. NeoLacta is the only human milk facility in India to have ISO clean rooms, HACCP certified processes, onsite R&D, chemical and microbial labs and walk-in freezers, which distinguishes NeoLacta from any standard human milk bank. Moreover, the proprietary technologies used for processing makes India the 2nd nation globally after the US to have a facility of this kind.

Continuing the legacy of supporting parents and clinicians by providing 100% human milk-based neonatal products, operations have been recently launched in the United Kingdom under the banner of NeoKare Nutrition. The founders of both the organisations, NeoLacta and NeoKare, have extensive backgrounds in human milk technology since they were instrumental in establishing the 1st milk bank in Australia at KEM, Perth, WA, in 2000.

  • Resolving Human/Animal (Pet) Conflict in the Twenty-First Century

New Delhi (India), November 16: Animal cruelty is tremendously dangerous to human civilization. Those who are cruel to animals are frequently cruel to humans as well. For offenses ranging from domestic abuse to cheating to horrendous assault, a statistically significant percentage of people end up in prison. As a result, anyone in your neighbourhood who is aggressive against animals or who promotes violence and breaching the law through social media platforms such as WhatsApp should be kept on the lookout. The number and diversity of cruel and criminal acts perpetrated against animals have increased dramatically. This has risen significantly during the COVID era when people fearful for their futures and irritated at being confined for so long turned their rage on animals and animal feeders. Poisoning, stoning, pursuing, running over, relocating street animals, and harassing, beating, and intimidating animal workers all became commonplace.

Some RWAs make it a rule that pets are not allowed on the premises. Some excellent residents for animal feeding. Some pet owners are charged extra maintenance fees. Some people designate areas where animals are not permitted. Some guards are given orders to hit community animals. Animals are prohibited in some elevators.

The following is a quick reference guide for pet owners and RWAs on the ground laws:

    • No RWA has the authority to prohibit people from having animals. This is supported by two High Court decisions as well as society registrars.
    • RWAs are unable to impose penalties on people who maintain dogs.
    • No RWA has the authority to prohibit pets from using lifts, but, if questioned, owners can use alternate operating lifts if they are conveniently accessible and comfortable.
    • No RWA has the authority to ask a resident to give up their pet.
    • There may be times when a pet owner’s dog barks, which may be irritating to the neighbours. According to the standards, noise is a form of expression that must be tolerated. However, pet parents are encouraged to assist as much as possible in the circumstances to prevent causing difficulty to their neighbours.

RWA resolutions that may harm animals violate Section 11 (3) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act, 1960. It is also against Article 51 A (g) of the Constitution, which provides for protection and improvement of the natural environment, including forests, lakes, rivers, and wildlife, and to have compassion for living creatures. However, maintaining the peace and beauty of your housing society is your responsibility, too. Pet owners should talk to their RWAs on how to dispose of pet faeces and other waste. The RWA can also designate pet corners and spaces for this purpose. It is also stated that pet owners, carers, and dog walkers must ensure that if their pet defecates in public places, the owner is responsible for keeping the area clean. The guidelines state, “It is underlined that each residential community and complex must determine which way works best for them, and solutions cannot be imposed on anyone.” Pets must be vaccinated regularly, and sterilization is recommended to prevent unlawful breeding.

Consider your dog to be a child that expects his loving parents to provide him love, support, protection, and respect. By ignoring his pleas to play, walk, or leave him behind, you will never be able to resist your canine’s need for support and love. Keep in mind that you have family, friends, a career, and a pastime, whereas your dog has no one except you, and you are his top priority.

  • India to come up with its own Swadeshi Size chart – INDIA SIZE

New Delhi (India), November 16: Buying branded clothes could be cumbersome as certain brands follow the UK size while others follow the USA size as the body frame of Indian men and women vary from their counterparts in the UK and the US. A specific size of one brand could vary from the specific size of the other brand in apparel. Usually, the consumer compromises on the fit of his shirt or a pant while buying the branded clothes.

Among several problems, a common example is that of the size of the neck of Indian males, which vary from their counterparts in the West. Indian males tend to have a slightly thicker neck as compared to the Western male of his category.

This anomaly won’t be experienced by customers anymore as India is poised to come out with its own size chart – INDIA SIZE that will usher in a drastic change in the Indian Garment industry. To counter this problem at the grass-root level, the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), under the aegis of the Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India, has initiated a massive national sizing survey to create an anthropometric database of measurements for Indians, which is a true representative of the entire Indian population.

After having completed the sizing process in New Delhi, it is being carried out with full steam now in Mumbai by NIFT, having completed in two malls – Orion mall and Inorbit Mall. Currently, they are rapidly executing the process in R-City Mall, Ghatkopar in this city. INDIA SIZE is expected to roll out sometime later next year.

The survey is being carried since July 2021 by the support of Design Smith Pvt. Ltd. The monumental project approved by the Government of India and supported by industry consortium CMAI entails measuring more than 25000 (Twenty-Five Thousand) people in the age group of 15- 65 years in six different cities located in six regions of India i.e. New Delhi (North), Mumbai (West), Chennai (South), Hyderabad (Centre), Kolkata (East) and Shillong (North-East) using non-contact human safe 3D body scanning technology.

Inauguration of Delhi Leg took place at Select Citywalk in the presence of Secretary Textiles (MoT) Upendra Prasad Singh, DG NIFT Mr Shantmanu and AS & FA (MoT) Shashi Ranjan Kumar.
