  • COVID spread can be reduced with improvement in air quality – reveals Mansoor Ali, in the latest research by his team at AMFAH India

COVID spread can be reduced with improvement in air quality – reveals Mansoor Ali, in the latest research by his team at AMFAH India

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], February 1: The pandemic has been a constant worry for every country across the globe for the last two years. Ongoing research is constantly bringing new facts and theories to the front, which shows us a better way to fight the virus. One significant aspect of research findings is air quality, as revealed by the recent research and development work of Mr Mansoor Ali and his team at AMFAH India.

An organisation founded with the purpose of offering climate improvement solutions, Mansoor Ali and his team are dedicated to leveraging air quality solutions to battle the pandemic. He has been offering his expertise and support to the Maharashtra government during the current coronavirus pandemic too.

    Relative Humidity and airborne transmission

It is a known fact that viral infections are easily transmitted when many people are in proximity to one another. However, it is Indoor Air that is too dry or too high in humidity that increases the risk of transmission as well as the survival of viruses. Transmission is most common in close range via droplets and airborne aerosols.

Some of the ground-breaking thoughts put forth by Mansoor Ali, Research Analyst & Indoor Air Quality expert, predicted COVID-19 wave in India and identified the scientific role of Ventilation Filtration Humidity in indoor environment towards breaking the virus and its chain.

“Understanding the role of relative humidity in the droplet spread of disease allows us to develop preventive measures that could aid in reducing the chance of transmission, particularly in an indoor environment. The self-cleaning process works best at a minimum humidity of 40 to 60% RH and is able to remove viruses from the body quickly,” reveals Mansoor.

    Looking at air quality closely

Mansoor is a pioneer in India, identifying the growing needs of indoor Air Quality issues affecting human health and wellness with Humidity control. His Engineering R&D and association with leading Medical Doctors, Research associates and masters in the common domain makes his company Emerging as a Global leading brand in Air Treatment, Purification and Humidity Solutions.

Mansoor’s research had identified very early that Covid is airborne. He also joined the lead petition filed by Dr Stephanie Taylor from Harvard medical school to WHO in the first wave, ensuring COVID was acknowledged and declared as an airborne virus.

    Major Concerns

“Air quality in our homes, in hospitals, offices, schools and other indoor spaces are a cause of concern. Lower air quality, with an imbalance of Relative humidity, weakens our immune system, making us susceptible to getting infected,” says Mansoor. When it comes to air quality, he highlights that each of us is breathing air, which is either too high or too low on humidity, temperature, and air quality. This is major because of re-circulated indoor ventilation.

Schools are reopening, and with kids being unvaccinated, parents are fearing the worst. According to the survey conducted by community platform Local Circles, around 36% of parents who have children attending school said that classes do not have good air ventilation. 41% of them have children who have their lunch indoors, which, the survey noted, puts them at a higher risk of getting infected with Covid-19.

Role of team AMFAH India in pandemic

Mansoor Ali and his team has been committedly working shoulder to shoulder with the frontline workers since the early days of the pandemic to help them breathe better quality air by installing their Latest innovation, Humidity Controlling Units (Patent Filed) in hospitals, police stations, war rooms and the like.

“We understood the importance of breathing good quality air when fighting COVID and during the peak days of the pandemic when the cases were severely on the rise. We collaborated with the MCGM Health Dept Mumbai to install our equipment at multiple hospitals, police stations, ICUs, war rooms, COVID shelters all across Mumbai. We also supported government offices and hospitals like KEM Hospital, Kasturba Hospital, Sion Hospital (Sion), Nair Hospital, ENT Hospital (Churchgate) and Trauma Center (Jogeshwari).  We installed them at the Shivaji Nagar police station and Oshiwara police station. It is important to safeguard the frontline workers, and people who are taking care of us, and thus, giving them the gift of high-quality air is the least we can do. The pandemic is still not over, and we should all take the right step to maintain the humidity in the air we breathe to make the virus less effective,” Mansoor Ali mentions.

Even Dr Shashank Joshi, task force member, Maharashtra state and leading endocrinologist, has re-iterated the significance of controlling indoor air quality as an additional yet important aspect of breaking the chain in the air itself apart from the COVID appropriate behaviour which every human being have to get ingrained.

According to research, the COVID virus can survive at least two weeks after drying at temperature and humidity conditions found in an air-conditioned environment. So, given the research and the extraordinary work he and his team is doing in our tropical climate, maintaining the humidity to temperature ratio in our indoor spaces is very important to keep the virus at bay!

  • Say No to Drugs and Embrace Your Life: Mohit Kamboj

Say No to Drugs and Embrace Your Life: Mohit Kamboj

Mohit Kamboj says no to drugs

India, February 1: As a responsible Indian citizen, I, Mohit Kamboj Bharatiya, think today half of the Indian youth is high on life. However, there is no reason to celebrate this fact because it does not mean they are enjoying their life to the fullest and making choices that they do not regret, but it means they are only enjoying their life by substance abuse. Adolescents think that it’s cool to be intoxicated in any way, so they make these choices and make their life miserable. In a country like India, where drugs are not legal, shockingly, it is simply available, and people tend to consume them and integrate them into their lives. Despite the obvious implications, they use it and overlook the reality that they are dealing with in their lives and jeopardize their future in the end.

I, Mohit Kamboj Bharatiya, want to appeal to the Indian youth to ‘Say No to Drugs and Yes to Life’. Out of 66% of people engaged in such practices of selling or intaking such substances, more than half of them are the youth of our country, or we can say the potential human resource our country is expecting to be the future of the nation. It is a vicious cycle that affects not just one individual but the entire society, putting the nation’s future at stake.

Drugs are the most dangerous type of abuse for the human body. They annihilate people from the inside out. When taken in high quantities or over an extended period, it begins to harm the organs and finally reaches the brain and can even be fatal. Drugs are sometimes used because they appear to be a temporary solution to a problem or bring solace by relaxing the senses, but this also demonstrates how harmful they can be to one’s health. Playing with the nervous system can never be helpful in the long run.

Our country’s youth drug usage has created an alarming situation. People who use such narcotics jeopardize not only their future but also the future of our country. Cannabis, heroin, alcohol, and opium are among the most often abused drugs in the country. Modernization has twisted the individual against traditional methods of social sensibility by making them vulnerable to the environment in which they grow. The stresses and strains of modern life pull them away from their personality and force them to make decisions that are not beneficial for the long run.

There are Indian laws to prohibit drug use to some extent, but in my opinion, there should be preventive measures to stop the youth of our country from indulging in drugs. And instead, I, Mohit Kamboj Bharatiya, the owner of a private conglomerate firm – KBJ Group, think young people should restrain themselves from making choices that harm their health and future. Drug abuse should be seen as an enemy of society because it’s eating up the youth. More and more people every passing day are getting indulged, therefore getting rid of it should become our priority. Through this medium, I would request the Indian youth to be brighter and put down the lighter.

  • Veganuary takes India by storm- ranks 3rd globally

Veganuary takes India by storm- ranks 3rd globally

2022 biggest year ever with participants in every country

New Delhi (India), February 1: Veganuary, the movement supporting people to try vegan in January and beyond, has proved to be a huge hit in India, which registered the third highest number of participants globally. This year, Veganuary has welcomed participants from every country in the world* for the first time. More than 6,25,000 people from 229 countries and territories officially signed up to try vegan for 31 days, making this the biggest Veganuary ever.

Veganuary was officially launched in India in December 2021, and the campaign immediately received support from popular vegans, influencers and brands alike. See the India launch video here- https://youtu.be/4fHEmANyDNE. The response confirms the findings of a recent YouGov survey** that 65% of Indians plan to eat more plant-based/vegan foods in the new year. India is only behind the US and UK in the global rankings.

Reflecting on the success of the 2022 campaign, Veganuary’s India Head Prashanth Vishwanath says: “It is incredibly inspiring to see Veganuary received so well in India. As more people become aware of the large impact our food choices have on our health and the planet, attitudes towards veganism are changing everywhere, and Veganuary’s growing popularity reflects this shift. We have indeed become a true desi phenomenon.”

Veganuary has also improved the accessibility of veganism by working with more than 40 Indian brands to launch new products and introduce special offers in January. Popular brands like Funfoods by Dr. Oetkar, Good Dot, Axia Foods, Alt foods, Pro Meat, Piperleaf, Bombay Cheese Company, Pilk, Sante Spa Cuisine, Bodhi Greens launched new plant-based products and menu items. Attractive Veganuary deals and bundles were launched by Rare Earth, Vegan Dukaan, Vegan Daily, Vezlay Foods, Hello Tempayy, Blue Tribe Foods, Greend, Vegan World, targeting the increased percentage of Indians now eating more at home.

Good Dot, the popular vegan brand launched Egg Bhurji for Veganuary to support Veganuary participants. Abhishek Sinha, founder of Good Dot said, “GoodDot is proud to partner with Veganuary to encourage people to try going Vegan this January. Towards this, we have offered a flat 20% discount on all purchases made from our website. Veganuary is a great way to encourage people to witness for themselves that going vegan is very easy these days and everyone can contribute to a better planet by trying vegan”.

Siddharth Ramasubramanian, founder and CEO at Hello Tempayy. Which launched special offers for Veganuary, said, “Veganuary has been a great success in India this year, and we, at Hello Tempayy, were thrilled to be a part of it. Our mission is to offer tasty, versatile and nutritious food across cuisines which is critical to delivering the choice that Indian consumers increasingly are looking for.”

Sweta Khandelwal, co-founder Alt Foods, which launched new plant-based beverages for Veganuary says, “Veganuary has absolutely made it a lot easier for people to be more aware of and to try vegan products. Through our mission of creating great-tasting alternatives, alt foods hope to continue supporting the journey of individuals seeking a better diet for themselves and the planet.”

Pointing at increasing interest in plant-based eating in India, the YouGov survey says more than 60% of Indians have a more positive perception of plant-based/vegan diets compared to 2 years ago. Industry projections also confirm this. India’s plant-based meat market, which is at $30-40 million, is estimated to grow to $500 million in the next three years. According to a study by the Good Food Institute, plant-based dairy in India is projected to grow from $21 million presently at a CAGR of 20.7% to reach $63.9 million by 2024. With the growing demand, meat and dairy alternatives are already competing with their animal-derived counterparts, even in price and availability.

This past year, the climate emergency and health were among the top concerns on everyone’s mind. Indians have shown that they are ready to take action where it is most impactful- by changing how they eat.

  • COVID – The Second Wave and India: A Tale of Two Months

COVID – The Second Wave and India: A Tale of Two Months

January 29: A quick recap of how the faith of Indians turned and twisted in 2 months as the second wave of Covid hit India. To say the least, the country was not prepared for such a massive toll on the healthcare system, and it collapsed. The country’s population gasped for air, and simultaneously, the markets crashed. Let’s have a look step by step at how it all turned out.

Let’s take a look at the headlines in March of 2021 (10 months ago) –

    1. Under 10,000 cases a day for a population of 1.4 billion people
    2. Lowest fatality rates in the world.
    3. The country opened up after the strictest lockdown ever known
    4. Industrial production inched back to pre covid levels
    5. Stock Markets were touching an all-time high
    6. India vaccine exporter to the world. Supplied to over 70 countries
    7. 6 Indian vaccines are under production. Frontline workers vaccinated
    8. India hailed in global media as a beacon of hope for tackling covid

Now let’s have a look at the month of April 2021 (9 months ago)

    1. In less than 30 days, India went from 10,000 cases/ day to 4 lac/day
    2. From being a vaccine exporter, India became a vaccine importer
    3. Local lockdowns imposed by each State. GDP hit once again
    4. Ten times increase in demand for Medical Oxygen across cities.
    5. From 900 MT India needed 9000 MT of Oxygen
    6. Breakdown of health infra as capacity could not keep up
    7. Medicine shortages and basic health infra- not available.
    8. Images of Indians dying and breathless splash global media
    9. From being hailed as a beacon, India shown as a failing State

    Interesting data point –

The first to be hit was Mumbai in the month of March. India’s financial capital

Next to be hit was Delhi in the month of April. India’s Capital

Finally – Bangalore was hit in the month of May 2021. India’s IT Capital

What went wrong (In one Month)

    1. The variant India got hit by is supposed to be 50% more virulent. Came in from the UK and South African strains
    2. An international influx of passengers especially from Canada and the UK increased (especially to participate in the farmer’s protests etc)
    3. States took their eye off the ball and did not announce lockdowns
    4. The Center was in the middle of elections in West Bengal. Took eye of too
    5. While we can blame election rallies and religious gatherings to some extent, the exponential increase of 10 times in the cases in less than one month needs more analysis

How did India tackle the Second Wave – (the good news)

    1. From a caseload of 4 lac cases/day and positivity rate of 18%, India is down to 95K cases/day with a positivity rate of 5%
    2. India continues to have the lowest fatality rates in the world (adjusting for unaccounted deaths and unreported deaths too). It is at 1.11%
    3. Highest recovery rates in the world. 96%
    4. Amongst the highest vaccinations in the World. Passed the 24 cr ie 240 million mark. Yet that is just 15% of our population.
    5. India is testing the highest number of people in the World. Uttar Pradesh (the largest State in India, larger in population than Brazil) is testing 2 lac, people, a day. 375 million in total. 2 million tested in a day (India)
    6. Oxygen supplies went from 900m MT to 9000 MT in less than 40 days. The entire country was moving oxygen on railways, seas, Indian Air Force flights, international flights. Countries went all out to help India create Oxygen capacity and it was the largest most complex logistical exercise undertaken. Today India is self-sufficient and many States have quadrupled their capacity (in anticipation of a third wave)
    7. India is amongst only 5 countries that have vaccines for Covid. 4 more vaccines are under development and 1 will be an inhaled version.
    8. India lowered the vaccination age from 45 to 18 thereby getting a larger population to be involved. Currently, it is estimated that India will hit herd immunity by Sept 30th. This is at 10 million jabs a day.
    9. 10 million jabs are equal to the entire population of countries like Qatar, Kuwait or Singapore per day
    10. The Private Sector and the Center came together in many ways. Many large organisations contributed their CSR funds to the PM Cares funds and also vaccinated their employees.
    11.  The RBI played a key role in providing financial support to the Economy. Many credit lines announced ample liquidity. Non-printing measures
    12.  The Indian Government has provided food grains and pulses to over 800 million Indians for the last 10 months and will continue to do so for the next 6 months. Largest food distribution program in the World.

India has been hit and it hits hard. But it is healing and getting back on her feet. It is not a country that will falter or fail. India will fight and excel. We tackled the first wave brilliantly. The second wave caught us by complete surprise. But never again.

In the meantime, the global news is now rife with articles suggesting that Covid may be lab produced and may have been leaked. A dimension that directly means reparation and payback. Let’s see what the future holds.

We apply the critical lens of Gender, Innovation, Finance and Technology (GIFT), for deeper insights into diversity, inclusion and sustainability issues.
